Dgrin Sharp Shooters Challenge #29

Welcome to Round #29 of the Dgrin Sharp Shooters Challenges. This challenge is open to any Dgrin member. It will run from Monday, June 29, 08:00am, EST time (GMT -4) to Monday, July 27, 08:00am, EST time (GMT -4).

The topic ready for your interpretation: They're Playing Our Song (Exclusive Monthlong Challenge)

Time for some foot-tapping, hum-inducing, finger-snapping inspiration! For this round, capture a photo that represents a song title of your choosing; we should be able to identify the song (or at least its gist) just by looking at the photo, even if we've never heard the song before. Since you have a month, we want to see the best of your best work! Entries must be titled with the song title (not lyrics or chorus or any refrains): dgrin username - song title. For extra credit, add the song artist on a second line in your photo caption. So show us who loves the sun, or capture a yellow moon—just don't leave us with an empty frame! :D

Your Judges:
Llywellyn
Greensquared (Guest Judge)

IMPORTANT NOTE: Your entry is to be submitted directly into a Smugmug gallery. It's pretty simple, just go to the gallery link below, and follow the upload instructions at the top of the page:DSS#29 Entry Gallery (http://challenges.smugmug.com/gallery/8720347_tC3TK)Remember, the basics stay the same: 1 entry per person, and the photo must be fresh, taken during this contest period. Do not use a minimal save method (such as "save for web"), and your exif will be embedded in your image, no worries!

To avoid disqualification, read, in full, the Dgrin Sharp Shooters Challenge Rules (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=129426), there have been some slight modifications.

On a related note, I'll be around intermittently during July (leaving on a jet plane), so the fabulous Greensquared has agreed to help answer any questions you may have during my absence. :clap Of course, supermod Erik will be lurking in the shadows. :wink

So continue on as you were! Emily's words are better than mine anyway. :thumb

When I first saw this theme I thought "Oh God, this leaves me out in the cold" then I remembered a song I just recently downloaded, a version done by John Coltrane and originally written back in the 1930's. Its become one of my favorites and just about the bluest song I have ever heard! One write up describes it thus..
"[Song Title] conveys such a vast range of emotions that more than 500 musicians have explored it. Some, like Joe Henderson playing solo saxophone, have chosen a hushed approach, while singers like Nancy Wilson have given it a shot of drama." and goes on to say.." it seems simple, but it's quite complex — emotionally and musically, with a very unusual structure. It even gave Frank Sinatra a hard time when he tried to record it in 1958. He gave up on the song, laughing that he would "put it aside for about a year." But he never did return to it."

Now to find a willing body to be my model and the right atmosphere...
assuming I can pull it off!!

One of my best/favorite shots ever was done with a little Olympus 3.1 mega pixel so I know right where you're at there!
speaking of which, now I'm lusting after the sigma D2 and the Olympus Pen E-P1 because of their compact size and they remind me of my first range-finder camera I got when I was a wee lad of 14 (in the dim dark ages of film :D) when my family was on its way to our last post in Thailand and we stopped in Hong Kong for a few days. Wow the selection and prices, (this was in the mid 1960's) who could resist?? My brownie never did see much use after that! Ha Ha!

Ohhh. This is tricky. Do you take a picture first, and then find a song title to fit it. Or do you think of a song title, and then compose a shot? If you go with the latter, purer, approach, you'll really have to be careful on the song title. If you choose Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World," how do you do this justice with a single picture. So you'll have to choose something more obscure. There are some classic, silly country song titles (e.g., "Your Wife is Cheatin' on Us Again," and "It's Hard to Kiss the Lips at Night that Chew Your Ass Out All Day Long"), but I think the punk band The Cramps might have some songs well-suited to literal, photographic interpretation:

"Eyeball in My Martini," "Naked Girl Falling Down the Stairs," "Don't Eat Stuff off the Sidewalk," "Bikini Girls With Machine Guns."

This is going to be a tough one. I've been thinking how can i do this? and what song?

how in the world does someone present a photo that somebody can derive a song from it?

its like...ok, get an America Flag for the back ground, then a farmer with a John Deer hat held to his chest covering his heart and i have the "Star Spangled Banner".

ok, thats a easy one.... but now how would i do a Metallica song? :dunno

seriously i wonder how important it will be in the voting, that the voter knows the actual song we are trying to present...

so maybe i better stick with notorious songs:dunno OLD MCDONALD HAD A FARM...E I e i o

On a serious note, I think this is likely to happen on the same level as the Emulation Challenge. There's an aspect of trust. I've been thinking about what musical artist would inspire an image and wondered whether anyone would even know the artist.

I've also wondered about the need for this to be a month challenge. Longer challenges seems to bring out more PS work than photography. No problem with that, but it's not my forte. I think my solution is going to be select an album and take a thematically consistent series of shots for each track. Maybe one will be good enough to submit.

:help somebody stop my head from spinning!!

I started thinking and all of a sudden I got one idea and it was like a dam broke and songs started rushing in... so fast I haven't been able to write them all down.
The ideas are all here... now to try to capture what I am seeing in my mind!!
I am exhausted now! :whew (google probably is too! LOL)

Thanks Kerry!!! I LOVE this theme. If nothing else I get to listen to great music I haven't thought of in a while.

As an aside, I feel the need to vent just a little bit.....I had to bite the bullet and upgrade from CS2 to CS4 :cry .....I am gaining an appreciation for the charges that photographers must charge their clients. So when my wife sees the credit card bill....and if she makes a stink about it.....maybe I could suggest that I charge her for pictures of our son (he's now 3 and we've never taken him anywhere to have his pictures taken...I've just done it). :giggle The video song is by Imogen Heap (I do love her, but I'm not crazy fangirl over her the way I am over the artist who trumps all others).

It's tough giving hints that won't just give it away... They formed two years before I was born, I've attended three of their concerts, and that plural noun usage should tell you the artist is more than one person. :wink

And I'm a stickler for detail in about everything I do, which can be very detrimental, but it's very useful in an editing career. :deal

Hi Kerry and Emily,

Would it be OK if I went with a song that was born off of a video game? It is more of a film score or in this case a video game score :scratch. The song title is "Apocalypse", the composer's name is Jesper Kyd (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesper_Kyd), and the video game is called "Hitman". Here is a youtube link to the score:

The lyrics are in Latin. When it first came out, it was a huge hit.

Any song title from any genre and any country is eligible. My only caveat is that if it isn't quite mainstream, enough info should be in the entry caption to help me track it down (if song artist/composer isn't enough). :thumb Oh, and if the song title isn't in one of the Romance languages, a translation couldn't hurt. :lol3

Mm, like Kansas in that they're still recording and touring, but not quite that classic rock. And Kansas is just a smidge too early.

:lol3
Ok, cool, so I guess I will include the same info in the caption that I mentioned in my post then which hopefully should be enough for the Judges to track it down easily.

As for the translation for it, I am not the right person :help :D

At least it is good to hear you don't "dislike" them.. :D

Problem is pulling off my vision, it is a good thing I have a few back up plans.. One thing I have noticed with this theme is that the ideas just flood in, but when I try to pull it off with the camera, it is a whole other story, especially since I am in need of a dry shoot, and live in lush Tennessee...

Anyways,, I am guessing you are into the 80's stuff Kerry? Are you an eighties girl?

You may be referring to a shot that I had in a challenge. The theme for that challenge was "Natural or Contrived" so I figured I had nothing to lose by using a bird brush since I was going for contrived anyway and I didn't care if they looked artificial.

Photo editing software has all kinds of brushes that can be used as tools to enhance a photo. It would be pretty tough call to tell folks it's OK to use one kind of brush and not another. :dunno

Have you guys heard of them? :scratch
I think I need a F5 :)

The first four are closer to me than I care to admit. That is the type of albums I got passed down from my brother and sister. Abba was absolutely in my teen years. After that, you lost me. Except a vauge memory of that pan flute playing. :D
So, yes, Tatiana, I know who they are. I don't about these kids on here though! :lol

1973 at Converse College Spartanburg: Nitty Gritty Dirt Band backed up by one of Steve Martin's early standup routines in which he did his baloon tricks, then played banjo with the band, even doing the old "trading frets" trick with John McEuen!

Then the next night it was the old Greenville Auditorium, America backed up by Poco, complete with TB Schmidt before he defected to The Eagles..

As Dave would have said had he been there, "something smelled good out there...."

He, he.... I knew :wink

The last group is from Europe - more or less 60s - 70s

I'm sure (almost) everybody knows ABBA, and maybe few heard some Zamfir's flute performances...

but the middle 2 are (were...) well known French singers :ginger

- I grown up in Europe ... Eastern :tough

:dunno

In other words: you can use them if you want, but... maybe you can find something else... :wink

Hmmm...okay. The first record I ever bought with my own money. Clue:

Metropolitan, excessively temperatured youngun'

Get that one and you will have MAJOR brownie points that will help you not one bit for the challenge, but will earn you at least one clapping smilie.

Please fellow dgrinners....I don't want to see someone's photog rendition of "Sunday Bloody Sunday" :D :huh

I'm sick - that was the first song that popped into my head - "hmmm...how do I pull that off without getting arrested in front of the church..." That probably would not be my finest hour...

Thanks for finally telling us Kerry - I was hot on the puzzle last night, but finally had to give up.

This one looks fun - and do-able for me! I've got my thinking cap on!
