Setting up site to look like Photo Timeline page

I like the layout of the Photo timeline page and either would like to make it so it stays on full time, instead of having to click on submit to get it, or would like to set up my page in a similar fashion, ie. header, large photo under and to the right, and photos/galleries in thumbnails on the left.

Can someone give me some advice on how to accomplish this?
