hi all,
As Harry described; our day was full of rain, lightning and huge boomers!
We did have a good lunch and got a table just before the lunch crowd:clap We left the Chili's with bellies full and smiles on our faces as we anticipated the great shoot we were headed to.
No lie the rain greeted us at the entrance to the rookery.
I was afraid for my life for about an hour as horrific bolts of lightning danced around us.
I was curious as to what all the birds do during a storm such as this:
Well they cover their heads just like we do!
http://fahner.smugmug.com/photos/25219764-L.jpg
they protect their little ones as best they can
http://fahner.smugmug.com/photos/25220300-L.jpg
and others, well, they just get wet http://fahner.smugmug.com/photos/25221755-L.jpg
...and cranky

Trish,
With all that rain are you sure Andy wasn't visiting FLA? :lol
These are sweet shots lady :thumb:thumb Beautiful birds and although the lighting wasn't great, you are right in saying that it wasn't all that lousy either. Despite the rain it must have been a really enjoyable trip. I saw Harry's fine shots and you got the same results :clap Plus, shooting the breeze with Harry is always a blast too :D So all of this shooting and driving must have made you two hungry. Where's da beef? :lol4
OK forget the food shots...lol I'm still impressed with your shots. They are outstanding Trish ^5

Thanks for sacrificing your safety to bring us these photos :humungus
I like how these show the birds in a totally natural state we don't normally see. You managed to get some good color and tonal depth despite the lighting conditions. Nice set! :thumb

Hey Path,
Thanks, I did enjoy seeing how all these birds manage during a heavy rain. Being at the rookery reminds me very much of the feeling I get when I go snorkling in the Keys. .. a feeling of entering another realm, truly being in the minority and being permitted to observe a very natural existance.

I :rofl when I saw this shot on my screen. I guess these birds don't watch the weather warnings that tell them when lightning is present stay away from trees..
Thank you.

Steve,
Thank you for the kind comments! I didn't see Andy. I have not had the pleasure of eating with him as of yet. :D The times that Harry and I get to get away for a "total photography day" are always fantastic. It is so nice to be able to talk nothing else but wishlists, technique, great shots that have yet to be taken and be able to shoot till we drop and then have a nice meal to boot..that is a perfect day.
(There are no shots of the food because we are too busy talking and eating!)
Make a trip out here Steve..well worth it and between Harry and I we could house a small army. Serious offer..Bring the family EAST!

Hey Trish,
We did have a good time despite the weather. My major dissapointment was that some of those pesky kids didn't fall into the alligator lagoon. http://dgrin.com/images/smilies/naughty.gif That would have been a photo op.
Good pics.
Be careful about inviting those Canon shooters down here. I do have the gators in the wetlands trained to attack white lenses. http://dgrin.com/images/smilies/biggrinbounce2.gif

Hi Trish!
Loved the rainy pictures from the Rookery, especially the fourth one. You can tell by the expression on the birds face, he is fed up with the weather.
Off topic - How are Mango and Kiwi doing? They are so cute. Hope you have a nice, rain free weekend.

Harry,
Little did those sweet little children realize they were annoying a "big kid in a candy shop and his mother (nature) told him he couldn't have any":rofl
Also, Sorry about inviting the people with the white lenses...I forgot how you trained the gators:dunno
I am looking forward to next year..we'll get an early start!

hi gayle,
how are you? It was a rainy day for sure. the birds didn't like it anymore than us.
Thanks for asking about Kiwi and mango:D They are sooooo adorable and the best little puppies. I have not shot them because they don't like to stay still, but next weekend I will enlist the helping hands of my husband to do some portraits of them..I'll be sure to post.
