Don (onethumb) added some text to the link to show it's a contest, not advertising anyone's product and not a hack. And we took it off the bottom of customized pages (it was never supposed to be on those...sorry).

It isn't so much about the winning as the learning. It's fascinating and eductaional to see how much links matter versus the words on the page, etc.

Yes, it helps to have the words nigritude ultramarine in the link, as opposed to other words. Google scores it higher that way.

They have an alternative spelling because the word negritude is probably more common than nigritude (they are both real words).

On Google today, we're on the 3rd page. Depending on which portion of the cluster you hit, we're #21 through #25. The important thing is that we've risen so quickly, have relatively few links to us, and are already higher than Slashdot's story about the contest.

You can help a great deal by adding links to other sites (forums, blogs, homepages, personal sites, etc) you may frequent.

I think the smugmug + ADVrider + dgrin communities could win this thing if we keep at it.

It was a little bit depressing... We got honorable mention for the best Nigritude Ultramarine pages, but we weren't close to winning the highest relevenacy.

That's not what's depressing. What was is the way the highest-placed sites did it, by hiring optimization firms who created farms of fictional pages that linked back to their page. It's just another form of spamming and I had hoped Google's algorithm wouldn't fall for it so easily.

But, we learned some things from the contest — legitimate things we can apply. So now smugmug is the #4 result if you search on photo sharing, ahead of Yahoo, Ofoto, and Shutterfly. Cool.
