Dgrin Sharp Shooters Challenge #28
Welcome to Round #28 of the Dgrin Sharp Shooters Challenges. This challenge is open to any Dgrin member. It will run from Monday, June 15, 08:00am, EST time (GMT -5) to Monday, June 29, 08:00am, EST time (GMT -5).
The topic ready for your interpretation: Circle or Square
Show off some shapes! Not just round. Not just angular. Your final image must feature a circle or a square somewhere within the frame. Polygons and ellipses shall be shunned. :wink So dig out those geometry books and look around: shapes can be found anywhere in anything. Be creative and have fun!
Your Judges:
shatch (Winner of Round 25)
divamum (Guest Judge)
IMPORTANT NOTE: Your entry is to be submitted directly into a Smugmug gallery. It's pretty simple, just go to the gallery link below, and follow the upload instructions at the top of the page:DSS#28 Entry Gallery (http://challenges.smugmug.com/gallery/8565009_rLiZ3)Remember, the basics stay the same: 1 entry per person, and the photo must be fresh, taken during this contest period. Do not use a minimal save method (such as "save for web"), and your exif will be embedded in your image, no worries!
To avoid disqualification, read, in full, the Dgrin Sharp Shooters Challenge Rules (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=129426), there have been some slight modifications.

One question please:
Would this ash-tray (for example) be considered a circle - or because it's not precisely a top view, it would be an ellipse?
http://allbiz.smugmug.com/photos/564292360_2wFzZ-M.jpg
...also would be the indentations banned?

There can be "both" a circle and a square in the image?
how about many circles and many squares? is that legal too as long as there is one? but not one or the other right? :scratch:scratch:scratch I mean there can be both?
A little confused.. after looking at photobugs photo..

Katmitchell,
From previous contests I know that:
When there is a theme containing a "or", both subjects can be present
- it's up to your interpretation "or" imagination :)

CIRCLE - A circle is a simple shape of Euclidean geometry consisting of those points in a plane which are the same distance from a given point called the centre. The common distance of the points of a circle from its center is called its radius.
SQUARE - a geometric figure consisting of a convex quadrilateral with sides of equal length that are positioned at right angles to each other as illustrated above. In other words, a square is a regular polygon with four sides.
Not to be confused with Ovals, Rectangles or Triangles. :thumb

Would a self-portrait count? I'm an engineer, and therefore, such a square :wink
This is going to be hard. Looks like I'll have to carry my camera everywhere for the next two weeks. On the road back to NC next Friday, so I'd better get something off soon.

Hey, Kat. You can always just choose to not participate if "She Who Guides Our Photographic Quests" deems a self-portrait is in order. For example, I knew I didn't have the tools or time to get a good entry together for the "Book Cover" challenge. But in my case for an SP, my image would likely break way to many mirrors in too many homes to have my smug mug on other's screens. (Like how I built a plug in there?)
I've got two weekends to see what I can find and produce for #28. Looking forward to it...

Depends on the shape of the projection.
Nothing a selective distort wouldn't help if needs be. :wink You could end up looking like a Tolkien's dwarf if you swing around a tankard and wear a helmet :D

As for regular self-portraits you just need to become creative with lighting, I did a few with my point-and-shoot camera last summer sometimes using one of those bendable lamps. But for the most part I'm with you, there are some photographers I know who do almost exclusively self-portraits and are very bold in what they will do in them. For me it's a much rarer thing Usually being a part of the body not a traditional portrait. But recently I did get some studio lights which is letting me have some fun with it.

Well, I've finally got the mulah for an upgraded body and can't find an Oly E-620 anywhere in UT, so I started to look at the D90, D5000, 500D and 50D. I finally found an image comparison between the 620, D5000 and 500D (T1i), all the same scene on the same day and time. Kerry, is it easier for you just to have the deletion entries labeled as such in the gallery so you just cull them all en masse when the round closes, or would you prefer them to be pointed out to you for "running deletions" as people have this time out? Serious question - just wondering what makes it easiest for you.
This one point is the only drawback to the entry galleries - they're awesome in all other ways and thus reverting to the entry thread format is NOT being suggested - but it was nice to have full control over one's entry.

Kerry,,
I am not sure I am right, and I looked at the rules again and again, but I could have sworn I read somewhere at one time that we are not supposed to use the actual words that are used to title the competition in our own individual titles.
Is this true? I think I read that once, but I cannot find it in the rules anymore.. If so, I need to change the name of my entry,, I named it " Circles of Coercion". At the time it seemed to fit and I ran with it. However, I would hate to get dqed over the title.
I tried to change it, but it won't let me.. what should I do? and is the name fine the way it is?
Sorry to be a pain,, eventually all of these rules will become second nature..

Kerry,,
I am not sure I am right, and I looked at the rules again and again, but I could have sworn I read somewhere at one time that we are not supposed to use the actual words that are used to title the competition in our own individual titles.
Thanks,:D

Kat, I am pretty sure that was never a rule, just an artistic suggestion.

Kerry,
I hate to add to the insanity of this round but I have a question. I hate to ask, but I need to know if this is ok.

I don't want to get DQ'ed for it looking like a frame, even though it is just work I did to eliminate the little bit of glass from the next row of blocks
Thank you!

Hi Dan.. Thanks for chiming in..:D
Well, what is your advice? Should I just leave it the way it is? :scratch
Or should I change is to "Rounds of Coercion" ? I am stuck between the two..
and I don't know where I read that but I must have read it somewhere on the boards.. so just ignore me if I am being air headed..

if i remember it was Emily suggesting to not use the words in your title as she wanted people to be more creative in expression than just plain obvious....

ok,, thank you Aaron. I knew I remembered reading that somewhere...
Well, I think I will go with the play on words, be more creative, and go with "Rounds of Coercion". I don't know how to change the title. I hope I am not going to have to re-upload it and delete it again..
Kerry is gonna ban me just for being a pain in the butt..........:D:bwg:hide

:doh --haha.. What a bumble head... Thanks Dan... I logged in the first time to do that, and because of the way the edit link shows next to my exif link only, I thought I could not get in to do that.. This is the first time I have ever had to go back and change or delete an entry like this, can you tell?
Changed it... and thanks for the help Dan, appreciate it....:D:thumb

Hi Kat,
One example off of top of my head would be Jeff Meyers' entry called "A Singular Catch" in the last round "Singular or Plural" so you should be ok.
edit: It looks like you have already decided to change it. The new title is very good too!

Yowza, I go out to run some errands... :huh
Personally, being the grammar and language nut I am, I have some editorially strong feelings against using theme words in photo titles. I don't DQ on it, but it's a bit creatively disappointing, especially considering the work that goes into the entries themselves. Why skimp on the title? (Or bloat it...if there's more than four words in a title, my eyes glaze over. But again, that's personal preference and does not affect my impartial DQ-determining side. :D)
Dnie, I'd swear I answered your PM. I know I went to look at your entry. I can see that it isn't a frame added in post, so I'll allow it. :thumb

MAN........This is like the entry that never ends........:deadhorse
I just know the judges will pick that off as lazy though.. so I gotta fixy..:rolleyes
WHaaaaaaaaa:bash.. we need a good WHaaaaaaaa smilie.. I am not sad, I am bawling and throwing a fit, ya know..
Oh Well,, for now I am off to shoot this really odd statue I found. Hubby is taking me on a shoot dinner... An early entry this time was supposed to buy me the weekend, and instead I am stuck in reload edit mode..

Speech Class.. Yep...
Ya know the one where the class starts with the professor saying : Today will be impromptu speeches, you will each draw a subject from my hat, and you will have 10 minutes to prepare and then get up in front of the class..:huh:huh:huh
Even though we have a month, this is what it feels like.. 10 minutes...:D
