View Full Version : crop thumbnails not working

I've been trying to replace the 1x1 cropped thumbnail (kind reposition the 1x1 crop) and the thumbnails are not updating (after like 15 minutes). I've tried on 2 different computers and 4 different browsers. The thumbnails are still the original ones from when I uploaded them 4 hours ago.
Is there a hangup somewhere? :scratch

It is getting really weird :scratch :scratch :scratch
If I change the crop thumbnail of the image to "a full image", it changes the thumbnail instantly.
If I then go and change it to some "custom" crop, it goes back to the 1x1 cropped image which was auto created when the image was uploaded.
Something is definitely not correct. And needs to be fixed ASAP.
This is the image that I have as my gallery feature thumbnail.

It is now cutting off the grooms head when I have a custom crop thumbnail set. :huh

More oddness ... I go into older galleries and adjust the crop thumbnail, they adjust immediately and show up. Why is this new gallery (well a few hours old now) not updating the crop thumbnails?

There is something wrong ... on another old gallery, I got the message:
Oops, something happened and we couldn't crop your photo

Another oddity ... clicking "Reset Crop" seems to toggle it through some random crop patterns. :scratch

Andy, there are still problems. Same gallery as I originally reported, just a few photos away from the one that first gave us a problem. This one the thumbnail does not custom crop either.

Andy, sorry to keep bothering you, but there must be a problem with this gallery ... here is another one that I was trying to not chop the groom's head and it won't take the new thumbnail:

I fixed this one
when this happens,
1. reset crop
2. recrop to 1x1
Tried that and other combinations ... no help.
Note: "reset crop" sometimes gives me a random crop on the screen, I still click save but never really saves it.
Anyway ... I e-mailed help@ so hopefully they can look into it.
Thanks again Andy.

I am having the same issue for the past couple of days now. My older galleries seem to work fine. This newer gallery had pics updated to it a few days ago and I cannot crop the thumbnails on all the pics, only some. There seems to be no reason for the ones that I can crop. Some randomly work, others don't. I have tried numerous times, tried reuploading the pic, tried logging out and back in, refreshed my page, etc. Nothing seems to make it work. I am clicking on the picture I want to crop, click on Tools, More...Crop Thumbnail, change to 1x1 and then Save Crop, right? That has been working in the past and still does on some, but not all. What is wrong? Does anyone know? Getting frustrated...
Thanks for any info.

For me ... the problem is now happening with all the images in my most recently uploaded galleries. On the older ones, some (most actually) work, while randomly the thumbnails do not update even though it says it saved it. Every so often, I get an error message.

This photo refuses to get cropped. Sometimes it says something went wrong, sometimes it says, crop saved. Nothing changes either way.
This has been going on since this thread was started and it's starting to get on my nerves.

Hi Paul,
Sorry about your troubles. I'll report this one. If I have any news, I'll post it here on the thread. It does look as if there is a problem with newly uploaded photos and cropping thumbnails. I hope that our sorcerers can pinpoint this issue soon.

Can you give us one or two current examples? I'll report them back to our sorcerers. Hopefully that'll give them sufficient data to pinpoint the issue.

I made this gallery last night and I'm having the same problem:
http://www.sissonphotography.com/gallery/8517621_RNEBJ/1/560650936_JzPey#560650936_JzPey
Any word on the issue? I've already sent the gallery link to my client, so it's rather important.
This brings to mind an unanswered question: is it possible to upload custom thumbnails?

Hi Johnny,
Thanks for the example. I've passed it on. I'm afraid, at this point, we can't do anything else than wait for our engineers to figure out what's going on. I hope they'll be able to pinpoint this with all the data from you. My apologies for any inconvenience.
No, uploading custom thumbnails is not possible.

Add me to the list who has found the 'crop thumbnail' tool to not work. I just joined smugmug a couple weeks ago as a power user and am still setting up my first gallery, custom layout, etc. I found the tool and thought it was a great idea, since the 1X1 square crop chops off the heads of many of my odd shaped thumbnail images. I thought I would just adjust the crop area with the tool. It does not work for any thumbnails at all however and does not report any error message. The "saved" thumbnails remain unchanged. I have tried this in IE7, IE8 and Firefox 3. I only have one gallery so far, so just go to http://wildworldphoto.net for reference. I hope it begins working soon since it is a big time saver....potentially. Come on you support hero guys, get this fixed please!!

In response to an email to our support heroes, I received the following speedy reply from one of the heroic staff, Wendee:
"One thing that usually does the trick, is to rotate all the images one
direction, and then rotate them back to normal. Rotating the images puts them back into the processing queue, and it helps to fix whatever is "stuck." Try rotating them, and then refreshing or clearing your browser cache, and try cropping the thumbs again."
This solution works every time with every thumbnail. :thumb All I did with each thumbnail that I needed to adjust the crop on was press the 'rotate' button a couple times and then adjust the crop. The resulting cropped area is saved and displayed perfectly. Actually I did not even need to refresh my browser cache. I just went back to the gallery and the thumbnail appeared as cropped.
Thanks very much to Wendee. You lived up to your name as 'support hero'! :nod

Before answering this I was going to try the ROTATING thing that Wendee suggested...I logged in and decided before I rotated them I would try one more time. After days and days of fighting with it, deleting them all, uploading them again, and trying everything under the sun...they magically started cropping again! :huh I have no clue what was wrong, but am happy it is working and I can get on with my life!! :barb Thanks to everyone who was trying to help us out, I don't know if was something ya'll did or "magic" but I'll take it!

Im also very happy it is working because it is a very handy tool and a huge time saver. I think it was the rotating action that fixed mine, as Wendee suggested. Anyway, maybe they fixed the underlying problem since then. :wink

Thanks for your patience, everyone!
