I shoot a lot of sports galleries entirely in the vertical orientation. Smugmug does not do a very good job of optimizing the viewing experience for such images. If you look at the gallery snapshot below, there is a ton of unused space. This gallery could both have a lot more thumbs and a much larger image. I know that it's reserving space for horizontal images, but such images don't exist on this page so it's giving us a lowest common denominator view rather than a view really optimized for what's on screen. We could have a main image that was two sizes larger and more thumbs on this page. Most of the bottom half of the screen is completely wasted. For reference, this window size is 1090px wide.
