I sometimes like to go through galleries and pick a selection for inclusion in a best of or my slideshow or most recently copying for ordering from a non color corrected gallery. What would be cool is a copy to gallery function. Currently I copy the photo then move the copy to the new gallery. Making this a one step process would be a nice to have.

Or instead of us wasting disk and making multiple copies, how about virtual gallery instead?

Virtual galleries would be fantastic...glad to hear that it sounds like it's coming our way!

I like it... a few random thoughts.
Will these be keyworded galleries or direct links? If the are direct links will you be able to view all associations of a photo? In other words I'm on photo x' in a gallery in it shows as a link to x. When I go to x it shows be all the virtual galleries its in? It's harder to maintain but bi-directional pointers make figuring out how the virtual galleries are wired a little easier. Also, this implies some level of referential integrity. Will deletes of the main cascade and delete all references?
Keyword galleries might be easier to configure but I can see where you would still need to build indexes of all the keywords in the background because you wouldn't want to search all the photos in my galleries looking for a particular gallery.

I would just assume there be a single back-end filing system for all photos and all galleries would be 'virtual' galleries. So a single image could appear seamlessly in multiple galleries. Edit the image and all virtual instances are updated.
Sweet! Just Smugalicious.

Sounds like what you're describing here is how Flickr manages photos which belong to multiple Sets. All of a photo’s Sets appear on the right-hand side for an individual photo’s page, but ingeniously you only see the ‘next’ and ‘previous’ photo thumbnails for the set through which you got to the picture you’re looking at. If you want, you can expand the ‘next’ and ‘previous’ thumbnails for the other Sets, but at first you’re not distracted by all those other ‘paths’ (i.e. the other Sets) away from this picture. I think that's a remarkable piece of UI design.
(I know that this isn't necessarily germane to your feature request, which I like, but I thought I'd clarify what you were saying in a way that makes sense to me, if no one else!)
