View Full Version : At what point do I give up on an upload?

Hi folks.

Been uploading a video since about 2 am this morning. It's roughly 450 megs. We're coming up on 12 hours though. The little upload box still shows signs of life but is it possible that something has gone wrong in the process? I'm tempted to start over but don't want to lose my 12 hours of progress if it's going to take that long again. Wish there was some percentage bar in the upload process where you could actually see the progress.

J.

To answer my own question, apparently about 14 hours. I gave up the download and restarted it. It was uploaded in about 2 1/2 hours and encoded in about another hour. Much more reasonable than 14 hours but would still love to see some sort of legitimate progress meter.

Can we see your upload log - what's your site? :ear

Hello -

I am also having the same problem, it looks like the video was uploaded but it has been processing for almost 4 hours. I uploaded 4 other videos earlier in the week to the same gallery and there were no problems. They were also shorter in length, though.

Here is the link: http://soozy.smugmug.com/gallery/8260052_ktLvK#540777252_S2J68

Can anyone help? Should I try uploading again? There was no error message in the control panel.

Thanks,
Soozy

Soozy,

Yours is kinda odd. It shows as processing, but the video is not in our processing queue. I am not aware of any server problems but it looks like the video never processed. I have not seen that before. Can I get you to try uploading it again? I am going to delete the processing marker as the video will probably not appear after this amount of time. Let us know if the video fails to process again.

I've run into something similar with two 512mb+ videos I uploaded yesterday/today. :scratch Gallery link is:

One of them was uploaded four times by the simple uploader under IE for some reason. I think it never received the proper acknoledgement after the upload. Filenames mov00644 and mov00657, I believe.

I don't know what the original file format was but SmugMug converts them to H.264 MPEG4 at a bit rate of about 1.3Mbps so the file size of a video lasting one minute is less than 10MB. You will save a lot of time & grief if you use MPEG Streamclip to convert your videos to this format before uploading. The maximum size of file you will need to upload is less than 100MB for 10 minutes of video.

If I have to sit and transcode the files, I'm spending time doing that. If I simply set them to upload, I can do something else.

I've actually never had an issue with video before, except when it was a new feature. I just checked the gallery again, and it seems the files still haven't converted. :dunno I guess I'll have to try uploading again and see what happens.

I just tried uploading it again, and after it finished the upload, it started again. :scratch It seems something is not right with the ack that the uploader should normally get. I'm going to try a different uploader.

Trying again using the "Old Faithful" uploader under IE. Filename mov00657.mpg.

Caveat: for large videos you need to increase the timeout or, better yet, switch to non-wait mode.

I looked through my upload logs for the last week and tried to find the two files that are being troublesome--neither one is listed at all. :scratch :dunno Very, very strange.

I'm also a little dissappointed in the attention my problem has gotten. :cry I've been spoiled by superior SM service when I've posted problems here in the past! :lust I hope someone chimes in soon...Andy? Doc?

Samir, I see that Tristan was helping you via the help desk. All good now?

After the file was sent to SM, they were able to add it into the gallery, but I haven't tried it since a few days ago. I've just given up until I can do more testing. I just don't have time.

Samir, I spent several hours last night creating several test files and uploading to our test system. I am also uploading them to my live test accounts. So far, all of the files are loading and processing without trouble. I will know more once this last set finishes. I will get back with you once I have tested things out and verify that they are working or not.

Thank you Doc. If it helps, I can give you an example file of a smaller size that uses the same a/v codecs. The file is coming from a Sony dsc-f828, shot in the hightest video resolution of 640x480 30fps. I was using nightvision at the time.

I've never had problems with these files before. And anytime I've exceeded the file length or time length it's always told me in my log. :scratch
