View Full Version : Basic account -- Sell Prints for Profit?

From what I can see in the different accounts, unless I upgrade to a Pro account, I am not able to make any profit off of print sales -- Is this correct?

I am going to shoot a local marathon in a few weeks, and was thinking that I would like to put the photos up for any of the runners to purchase. I'm not a Pro, nor have I ever attempted to sell any photos before. I have no idea what the market for these shots might be like, so I'm a little put off by the idea that I might have to shell out an additional $110 for no capture. I'm not looking to make a killing here, just testing the waters to see if there is any market out there. Ideally, people would buy some prints and I might make enough money to buy another camera accessory. I won't be at the finish line, but mid course, and I wouldn't be taking any officially sanctioned photos -- just freelance.

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks,

Boris

Correct.

Maybe I'll just put them up there for public domain use and see what the download stats are like. If they get used, and I shoot anything of any decent quality, I can try to do more with it next year.

Thanks,

Boris

Smugmug allow you to upgrade and downgrade you account (to downgrade, you have to email the smugmug helpdesk).

You could upgrade to a Pro account for a month or so, and then downgrade afterwards...

Payments are for a year in advance, so that'd be bad, as Boris would lose out on the pro stuff for 11 months.
