Well since Andy's "gone fishin'" (anyone else hear whistling? I swear I hear someone whistling...I wonder if Andy took Barney :rofl )
I thought I'd drop this in here. He can move it when he gets back-:D
anywho....
I came up with this idea this afternoon for a non-competitive challenge, see what you think.
I was gazing up at the beatiful afternoon sky on my way to work realizing again there would be "no shoot for you!!!" When I thought....
"Wouldn't it be cool if a bunch of Dgrinners could coordinate a group shot of the sky above their heads at precisely the same time?"
Set it up in advance, syncronize our watches, walk out side our homes or whatever, point the camera straight up and FIRE!
Now, I'm not real educated (but you knew that DIDN'T YOU :wxwax ), but I'm not naive enough to forget about time zones. Meaning, we'd need someone real good with clocks and math (remember: reading is hard :rofl ), to work out a schedule.
IF, it could be coordinated, I think it would be a blast to see all the pics posted of what we all saw at that moment in time.
Well? Is it a rose or a fart? (we can say "fart" can't we :uhoh , maybe I should have checked first....)

You know what? This is a pretty damn good idea! :thumb
Be nice if we can time if to happen on a day when there's weather, but that may be too much to ask for. I assume we'll have to settle for a weekend. I can help forecast.

Dayum, I forgot about the world angle. National Geographic once did a show called "One World, One Day... The Weather." I reckon we can do something similar here. We'd have to reach out to as many countries as we can, but this could be even cooler than I'd imagined.

I think we'll need a couple of things to make this work.
1/ Contact as many dgrinners in as many countires as possible, to see if they can shoot.
2/ Pick a day.
3/ Pick a time.
either everyone shoots at the exact same second (which means a lot of night sky shots)
or everyone shoots at the same time of day (say Noon in each country.)
Once we get the above logistics sorted, we can do this.
First step, bring this to the attention of members across all countries. We need a volunteer to go through the dgrin membership and make a list of folks not in the USA (I figure we won't have much troubkle getting US coverage.) Then I'll follow-up and contact them.
Any volunteers?

I didn't know about the National Geographic thing. I hope they don't mind if we borrow the concept...
Sid-you may have a point about coordinating it for noon or another time of day, it would certainly make it easier. But, if we can find a time world-wide that offers the most *light* it would be real cool to get the nightshots in.
Behr-doesn't matter that we are so close really, I've seen days where it was sunny in Medford Lakes and pouring down rain in Marlton. We just have to *believe* :D
Ok, so like Sid said, we need to:
1. Make up a list of *active* Dgrinners and their location.
Possible solution for that would be to start a thread asking who is interested and have them put down their name and location in the thread. We then tabulate the results from that. Give people a week or two to sign up.
2. Find out if their is a universal time over the next month or so when there will be the most available light-the longest day of the year is usually in July isn't it? Forgive my ignorance but, I don't know whether the "longest day of the year" is a world-wide phenomenom or not (I would think it would be, since it deals with the distance of the Earth to the sun). Someone should be able to answer this 'off the top' of their head I would think :D
3. Again, forgiving my ignorance, what time of year do the Scandinavian countries (and even Alaska if I'm not mistaken), have those like 18 hour days?
If possible we should use that to our advantage.
I appreciate the response guys, makes me feel like I've moved from the barn to the front porch :D
I'll be checking back in regularly....
now where did I put that atlas........:scratch

Would be delighted to do so. :D The longest day of the year is the same day for everyone north of the equator. That very same day is the shortest day for everyone south of the equator. Now, fast-forward 6 months, and you have the longest day for everyone south of the equator, and shortest for everyone north. The reason is not the distance to the sun, but rather the tilt of the earth's axis. This is also the reason why Aussies have summer when us 'Merkins have winter.
3. Again, forgiving my ignorance, what time of year do the Scandinavian countries (and even Alaska if I'm not mistaken), have those like 18 hour days?
That would be summer months, which is beginning now. So good timing! :)
I think this would be a cool idea.
Ok guys...im going off line in about 12 hours after this post (currently 15.24 in new york) I would love to know exactly when you are going to do this prior to me going off line as i may well not be back for 2 weeks or more.
Will you know when the shot to be taken is within the next 12 hours ? That way i can still shoot & post later.
I assume you want to shoot on june 21 but what time ?

Why would everyone have to shoot at the exact same time? What would it hurt to shoot say in the same 24 hr. period? Like the June 1st Worldphotoday 2005. You can view at www.worldphotoday2005.com (http://www.worldphotoday2005.com)

First order of business...
:D
Why would everyone have to shoot at the exact same time? What would it hurt to shoot say in the same 24 hr. period? Like the June 1st Worldphotoday 2005. You can view at www.worldphotoday2005.com (http://www.worldphotoday2005.com/)*Because* the thought that all over the world at the *same* time we are all pressing the shutter and capturing the *same* instant in time. This to me has more of an impact then the 24hr. idea. We all (those of us that post pics) share what happens in our lives during the course of a normal day. This challenge would be to share a common experience at the same moment. I would LOVE however, to do the 24hr. thing at some point in time as well-it's a great idea.
Second order of business....
In order to get Gus onboard I'm trying to get this set asap. After a quick look here:
http://www.worldtimezone.com/
I'm leaning towards 7pm GMT. Obviously, for some of us that would actually be *June 22*, but that's not what's important (I hope...):dunno
The countries between say Saudi Arabia and central China will most likely be in darkness (unless I'm really misunderstanding something...).
Gus, for instance, depending which side of Australia he's on (my apologies here Gus...) would be anywhere from 8am and 10am June 22.
Alaska on the other side would be at around 8am or so.
Does this sound right? We should pretty much have 'good' light from Alaska to Turkey. My humblest apologies to anyone in India (it would be midnight there I believe) and any other countries affected.
Well, how'd I do :dunno ?
PLEASE, make any corrections or suggestions to the above as soon as you can-I want to do this before Gus "goes offline".
Thanks,
Mongrel
FORGOT: as far as facing a certain direction? Any ideas? North? South? East? West? The nearest McDonalds?
Speak up fast-Gus' time is running out.....tick...tick...tick....:wink

Smack? I'm sorry man, I wasn't trying to *smack* you :huh . I was just clarifying why I wanted to set it up for the same time.
I have posted photos, and removed them. But, point well taken.
ahhh....I hope you didn't think I was trying to say that *you don't* post photos? NO, no, no! Not my intention at all again. I just meant that the collective 'we' whoever we are (yourself included), see little glimpses of each others lives when we post shots. Sorry if you took it another way.
Guess I won't be involved in this either.:thumb
I hope it's not because of the above? If you don't like the idea or want to participate, that's cool. But if you are not participating because of something I said, that would be a shame. It should be nice and sunny in Fla. at that time :):

7 am on the 22nd is a bit early but definetly doable here in New Zealand, might get a nice pre-sunrise dawn shot. I think we get something like 5-6 hours of sunlight that day. I'd be up to give it a shot though.

It's difficult to know just where to 'draw the line' :D
I am open to suggestions, it seemed after looking at it for a bit that this would put most Dgrinners in daylight (even though for some it would be very *early* daylight).
If you, or someone else thinks that moving it up or back an hour or so would be better then by all means let's talk about it.
Anyone know which side of Australia Gus lives?

I'm going to go ahead and set the date\time on the 'unnofficial' Dgrin Sky Challenge 2005 for:
Tuesday June 21, 2005 at 7pm GMT
For some of us it will already be June 22, but that's ok :D
Hurry up and let me know if this is OK....
I'd like to wait until Andy gets back and make sure this is cool, and request that a Sky Challenge sign up thread be stickied. This is so we can all log in if we are going to participate and where we will be shooting from.
NOW-
After giving it some thought, I think it would be best that we shoot *whatever* the most interesting view of the sky we can find for that date and time. Rather than limit it in anyway this will allow us some leeway for creativity and such. I *highly* suggest we shoot as wide as possible :D
(Andy will go easier on me if we do...:rofl )
Thanks again for all the positive interest in this idea, I look forward to seeing the results if we can pull it off.
(Also, if a moderator would be so kind to let me know whether I have overstepped my bounds by posting and pursuing this I would appreciate it. I *honestly* don't want to appear too aggresive :uhoh )

If I'm doing this right, 7PM GreenwichMeanTime on the 21st? This would leave Gus in the dark at 5AM and myself in twilight at 7AM, but looking at sunset and sunrise times, if you move it to squeeze in Gus, say two hours to 9PM GMT, then everything east of London is in the dark... tough question... Mostly I just wanted to let you know, Gus is in the dark at 7PM GMT.

Well, let's see....
In order to 'see' what time it will be where you are at 9pm GMT on June 21 take a look here:
http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?month=6&day=21&year=2005&hour=20&min=0&sec=0&p1=0
If that chart is correct, in Sydney and Brisbane Australia, it will be 7am. Not so good for our friends in and around Perth-5am there.
In Anchorage Alaska it will be 1:00pm.
In New Zealand (Wellington) you should be fine-9am there.
Not so good for points east London over to Singapore (it will be 5am there).
Ok, so what do we do?
Easy: We do the 'challenge' TWICE. One for 9pm GMT and one for 9AM GMT!
This way no matter where you live, you will have a *shot* :D in the *dark* AND a *shot* in the *light* :thumb
Now, Behr brought up a very good point. Because this is a weekday many of us will be unable to participate due to work constraints. So....
How about we move the "Sky Challenge 2005 Part I" up a few days to Sat. June 18 at 9pm GMT? We would then be in a Sat\Sun period which may make this whole thing more enjoyable. I doubt very much we will miss the few minutes of daylight by not going for it on the 21st. And we still get a pretty chunk 'o the moon :wink
Yes? No? Drop the whole idea? Whatcha think?

This sounds like an interesting idea. All of us proto astronomers pointing our glass to the sky and snapping shots at the same time. I'm in. I second the notion of moving it to a Saturday/Sunday to maximize the participation. To throw a wrench into the planning I say we use straight up 1200 Zulu just to make things easy (and to guarantee that it is either Sat or Sun everywhere).
So, how are we going to handle long exposure shots (not that my shot will be one of those shots since I live in America and this is clearly daylight biased for us)? Say you live somewhere hella dark and you want to do a very long exposure (say an hour). Should your start shot time, your mid shot time, or your end shot time be the designated moment in time?
Also I propose that we post our GPS coordinates and the true direction (as opposed to the magnetic direction) that our cameras our pointed. The really advanced people could even include such pertinent information as elevation above MSL and the angle from horizontal that our cameras are pointed. I figure that it'd be interesting to see the subtle differences in the changes in the sky based on location and elevation of the observer. Then again, I'm a nerd to knows how to navigate using the stars so maybe that's overkill -- but I'm willing to assist with how to do some of these things if people want.
:D
Oh and by the way Zulu is military speak for GMT which is the old way to say UTC which is Coordinated Universal Time (exept the acronym is in French so it's all backwards). Also we can all synch our clocks by going here: http://nist.time.gov/timezone.cgi?UTC/s/0/java (you'll need Java I think).

1. General interest in the idea seems to be positive.
2. Weekend would be best.
We need to finalize:
1. Best time for the shot\shots
2. Whether to do the "Sky Challenge" in two phases-day\night and night\day
3. Details of *how* to set up the shots i.e.-general or specific direction
My suggestion would be to wait for Andy to get back and get his take on it. Then as he sees fit, start a new thread\s with surveys to get input from Dgrinners on the above.
Everybody pretty cool with that?
Continue to report in if anything comes to mind.

was my thought on it as well. I'd like to leave it as open as possible. If someone wants to make in a particular direction that's fine, but honestly, I'd think I'd rather *see* through the eyes of my fellow Dgrinner, what they *saw* as a photography at that moment in time.

We got the go-ahead from Andy. I appreciate him taking care of moving this and setting up the stickies.
Before I post in the 'official Sky Shoot 2005' thread, I want to put this out to any last minute suggestions or changes. Gus said he would monitor this if possible so hopefully he'll get the latest info and be able to participate. If not, he and I (and anyone else interested) will shoot on the 21st as well :D
Here goes:
1. 9pm GMT will be the time
2. Sat June 18\Sun June 19 will be the 'day' depending on where you are
3. Subject: *Preferably* Sky shots-i.e.-sunrise, sunset, skylines\cityscapes, moonshots. Since this isn't a challenge, I'll give ya'll leeway as to how you'd like to creatively shoot this.
The Idea: The idea is that *we* as a worldwide community can experience something at exactly the same moment and capture that moment in time using our photography.
Other notes and misc:
I think it would be best if we do this twice-once at GMT 9pm and a second time at GMT 9am. Not sure how close together we can do this, but I'd really would like *everyone* to have a chance for both 'day' and 'night' shots.
Thinking ahead:
I have great confidence in our skill level as a group. I honestly think that this project may just produce something very worthy of publishing. Now, I admit, I'm great on ideas but short on 'how-to's', but my creative imagination is picturing a coffe table book-"Digital Grin World Wide Sky Shoot 2005", sitting on coffee (or tea :D ) tables around the world. So SHOOT YOUR BEST!!!
Ok, that's it for now-PLEASE comment here with any last minute corrections\changes\suggestions. I really want this finalized so people can make plans in advance.
I'd like to thank everyone for such enthusiasm and support-

On the other hand, I have not been following this meantime, greenwich thing.
Where do I go to convert that to eastern daylight time?
Check the main thread, when I finalize the time I'll post a link there.

On the other hand, I have not been following this meantime, greenwich thing.
Where do I go to convert that to eastern daylight time? Right now (during daylight savings time) in order to get Eastern Daylight Time you need to subtract 4 from GMT. So 2100 GMT (9:00 PM) is 1700 (5:00 PM) EDT.
Don't forget to go to http://nist.time.gov/timezone.cgi?UTC/s/0/java to synchronize your clock before you shoot.

Mongrel, a question -
Can you please define 'sky'. Do you mean 100% of the frame needs to be sky or just most of it? Is a skyline ok? Can there be something in the foreground?
Thanks!

Mongrel, a question -
Can you please define 'sky'. Do you mean 100% of the frame needs to be sky or just most of it? Is a skyline ok? Can there be something in the foreground?
Thanks! No, definately not *all* sky-unless that's the shot you want to take, which would be fine. I don't want this to be so limiting that it becomse *hard*. A skyline would be fine-perfect in fact :thumb Just what I had in mind.
When I first thought of this I happened to be looking up at the sky on my way to work. I was sitting in traffic wondering what all the other Dgrinners might be looking at that moment. It just snowballed from there :rofl What if we *all* were outside looking up at the sky at the same time? What would each of us see in our little corner of the world? Kind of like lovers talking on the phone long distance, and describing what the view was out their respective windows. Corny? Romantic? FUN? :rofl
Anyway, I don't think it *really* matters *what* we shoot, but *when* we shoot. The sky is a pretty basic subject (to shoot I mean, not that it's not complex artistically-wow, talk about a tangent...), so I figured it would be good to have a general focus for a group shoot-hence the "Sky Shoot" idea.
Really though, any number of 'sky' type shots will work:
All Sky-cloud formations, the view through tree branches, a BIF
Landscapes\City scapes
Sunrise, Sunset, Moonrise, full moon
Rain :cry
The Beach, A marina, a subway platform
Anything that would include some sky in it would be cool.
Sorry this is so long-winded. I hope there is something that answered your question in there :rofl
Take care, and thanks again for the interest Nir,

btw-even though I haven't been commenting on your shots, I have noticed them (and looked at them), your hard work and constant shooting are paying off-some very nice urban\people work. Keep it up!

The place where time starts and ends, and you are there! I hope you can do this Gubbs!
How easy could it get, Saturday 2 pm local time... that's this weekend and it's supposed to be raining or showers (flukey weather this year, normally it doesn't rain much if at all in June rainy season's supposed to be over).
I just have to pick a spot, huh? I'll double check my camera time too.

Imagine a slide show of all the photos shot, setup by longtitude from Greenwich East ... 21:00, 22:00, 23:00, 00:00, 01:00, ... 19:00, 20:00 ... night goes into sunrise, then day, noon, afternoon, sunset and night again ...

After looking at Andy's gorgeous gull and moon shot taken in the daytime, can anyone tell me what part of the sky the moon will be in at 2 p.m. near San Francisco?
When it comes to math and science I get confused. Why can we even see the moon in the daylight anyway?

A Farmer's Almanac should be able to tell you where it will be. As per why you can see the Moon during the day, the reason is really pretty simple. Remember, the Moon orbits the Earth. So sometimes the Moon is on the opposite side as the Sun, sometimes it is on the same side of the Earth as the Sun. Thus, as the Moon orbits the Earth every 28 days or so, there will be some days when you see it at night, some days when you see it during the day, etc.
By the way, this orbiting the earth by the moon is also why the moon goes through "phases".

I'll try a google to see if I can figure it out. The moon has been getting bigger, I remember taking a pic of it a couple of days ago.
I went here
Will you see the moon? (http://aa.usno.navy.mil/data/docs/RS_OneDay.html)
and I won't see the moon until 5:08 p.m.
Oh well, maybe someone else can use the link to see if they can see the moon at their local shoot time.

We are heading up to Brissy for a holiday soon it better not rain then! I shouldn't complain about the rain it's more than welcome with the drought and all.
My hubby is a queenslander and he always stays inside when it gets cold and wet too. The climate down here in new england is a fair bit different to what he was used to up in Mt. Isa and Townsville thats for sure....
