setting custom hostname help

I have an account with go daddy,
went thru the steps in the instuctions but I am stuck.
Launch total DNS Control Manager -okay
Delete and existing records that will conflict with your domain.
If you are going to set it up for www, delete any that are set up for www.

Under CNAMES is
Alias Points to TTL
www @ 3600 edit and delete


can someone tell me what that is and is that what I need to delete?

They frequently put in other aliases for inactive or unconfigured accounts to their own advertising pages. You know how when you go to an URL and instead of it being not found you end up on some buy a domain page? That's usually what they're doing.

I haven't configured a CNAME record with Yahoo and don't have an account to see how it's done, but they do have a FAQ here that mentions that you can do it:

Hi......I have had so much trouble setting this up the right way. I called godaddy and they said I have to have an A record and then in cname I have to put www in the alias field and the @ symbol in points to. The nthey told me to go to forward domains and forward to my domainname.smugmug.com which is what everyone is saying not to do. I have had 3 of their people tell me this already so can someone please set the record straight?

They actually have good CNAME support if you know where to look on their page and ignore what their help desk reps say. Also, you don't want them to configure it because they do it wrong.

Thanks Baldy...one last question...do I delete the "A" host info that is already in there?I don't know what you would use the A name record for. The idea behind an A name record is you can configure your URL to point to our IP address.

But just like businesses have multiple street addresses, one for each building, business like ours that have multiple connections to the Internet and multiple data centers add and change IP addresses.

Surely GoDaddy is like that so it's very odd that they would suggest an A name configuration to smugmug. Anyway, CNAME does everything you need.
