Heron on a treetop, night

Or almost night, the sun had set, but the sky was a crummy light in the background. I set the EC at +1.............maybe not high enough, but I did change it by two stops in doing that, or almost two. That is a filter for the dark sky. I used neat ninja. on some, I can't always tell which and on some I used too much....

We waited 1/2 hr or more, on this bird to fly. I finally started yelling at him. I would have scared a night heron to death, or at least to Florida, but this guy wasn't moving, not until I looked away. I tried faking it, too.

I like the heron walking shot a lot. Its a good capture and well composed.
My reaction to the heron at night shot is why bother? You ran into a shot where the exposure wasn't enough. The resulting shot wasn't worth the effort you put into it. I had a bunch of similar shots from my last outing when had rain and grey colorless skies. I had to delete lots of similar shots because the end result wasn't worth the effort I would have had to put into them.

and say we observe and record the wildlife but we never, never, ever ever want to become part of the action. Yelling, waving, throwing things etc. to get the wildlife to act in a certain way is a http://dgrin.com/images/smilies/nono.gif

I have to agree with Harry on the first ones. Unless you were going for a silhouette, why bother? It looks like it was just too dark to get a good exposure :dunno

I do applaud you for shooting late in the afternoon and trying to get some sweet light :clap As you found out, the birds don't always cooperate :huh

I also agree about being as invisible as possible while observing these beautiful creatures. I may joke about yelling or throwing a rock, but I'd never do anything like that :rolleyes The worst thing I've ever done is I asked Andy to walk towards an Egret we were shooting :lol3 Yes, it was pretty scary for the poor bird :lol But I don't believe it did any lasting damage :lol4

I agree with all of you.................and I should have left the ospreys when the light was too low to catch them in flight. The nest is in focus, haha.

Oh, I don't agree too much on that heron, I scared the beejesus out of a night heron twice, and we know I wouldn't have done that on purpose. That blue heron, he isn't in therapy. I may increase mine.

I won't do it again. Herons have an annoying thing about playing invisible. I think they honestly believe that if they don't move, we don't see them, unless we walk at them. I had no way of walking on water to that heron.

I sat on the road for an hour observing a heron I haven't had time to work up yet. That was before trying to scare old faithful at the top of the tree. I was at a covered double seat part of the walk, where "some" people sit and talk loudly. He was undoubtedly used to movement and noise coming from where I was.

Everything else I agree on.

The funny thing about the "slow walker", I was only using it for my education.

I woke up this morning and thought, "I like that shot", I had to check, didn't even know if it was in focus. I like that shot better than almost any I have worked on lately. Has a subtle element of absurdety, IMO, along with being a nice shot. And easy to work up, too.:D

I am late on the get back but what can you say to disagree with the power .I have a blue shot at the same light and the only way i could get it to be good would be to print and paint it :D now the walking shot :thumb :clap

The walking shot was god's gift of wonder and surprise. Never seen anything like that in my life. An egret pops up in the rd in front of me.

That there "one", of which I have at least 10 of the first minute, I thought he would spook. He almost did several times, but we held steady. Just for the information of "who" would want to know, I had my 70-200 on when he popped in front of me, so to speak. About that far away was "right in front of me", in my mind. I took a bunch of shots, before I very carefully sat on the ground and put on my long lens.........................then I had to back up. Shoulda taken off the extender.
