What's been going on with SM's speed lately?? For the last week, it's been chugging along at the speed of smell...

the speed of smell?
We're really concerned about speed. If you can do some diagnostics, we can help. First, tell us what site you're browsing, exactly, and then also are you on a mac or pc? From work or from home? Wired or wireless? What is your ISP please?
Thanks - we'll help!

I've been trying to do some work on my site over the last week or so, and it seems to be running a LOT slower than it normally does. www.mekphotography.com, PC-XP, home, Wireless-N with gigabit routers, Comcast cable ISP. Wireless connection speed is between 117-130 MBPS, internet speeds are as tested: http://www.speedtest.net/result/465771297.png.
I've just been having a lot of trouble just navagating my site lately. Pages don't want to load fast.
Obviously, I don't really like this as it's a turn off for potential clients.

Hi Michael, we need to see the speedtest to SmugMug @ San Jose, not the server you tried.
Also, can you run a traceroute for us?
Try these instructions to run a traceroute on a PC:
http://www.smugmug.com/gallery/2959046
That will help us see if and where any problems may be.
Thanks. I'd also like you to flush cache comepletly, and try browsing http://mekphotography.smugmug.com/
Thanks, standing by!

I just signed up to smugmug on Friday and I'm noticing it is very slow as well. I have been trying to configure my site all weekend and it has been very frustrating with poor page loads and timeouts.
My site location is http://macmoov.smugmug.com/

Hi Andy,
Thanks for helping us to work on this item. I posted in a similar message thread about a week ago with my traceroute results. I tend to hop between multiple locations and multiple hardware/software combinations. Namely a Mac Mini using both Safari and Firefox. Also working on a Windows XP system using Chrome or Firefox, which is a laptop, so I connect in various places. I'm still running into the slow speed issue at all of these locations. It's something that began happening within the last two weeks or so, because previously the site has been blazingly fast for me. These days, there are times where things are running fine and then the site will hang. It happens whether uploading photos, viewing photos, deleting photos, trying to access the control panel, etc.
I just ran a traceroute using the Windows machine and got the following:

I'm having problems also ever since updating to FF 3.0.10 . FF memory is usually just over 100k but after awhile it climbs to 300k and once to over 500k. Delayed typing, slide mouse down tools menu and have to hover item for 5s before it highlights. Whole page draws but thumbs and photos take 5-20 seconds to show. Links like breadcrumb not active for 5-10 sec.
Actually was using 3.0.9 and updated to .10 hoping it would fix the slowness, no go. Anyway it seems like FF is not playing with Smug.
Closing FF and restarting clears it but soon it is back to slow. Clearing cache/cookies made no diff.
Normal browsing logged off memory max's at about 165k. Only when logged in using tools like crop thumbnail, move to gallery, etc. does the memory bloom.

It does not always occur after using Firebug - just sometimes.

It does not always occur after using Firebug - just sometimes. Interesting thought. Guess I'll have to suspend FB until needed. With the
old version I always had it disabled until needed, too many sites had bad
code. Remember being disappointed when it did not have the disable pick
when new version installed some time ago. Hope suspend works the same.

This seems to be an ongoing issue with my site now. Speed is WAY down and it takes forever to do simple things like customize a gallery or set prices. Customers are also reporting lethargic picture loading.
I have been uploading pictures today and speed is VERY disappointing. I'm not sure what's going on.

Yep, load times for me are of the chart... Times appear to be 40+ seconds for my front page... And I don't have any no-cache directives even!
I just rescaled my graphs and ouch...
Andy, can you confirm there is a problem at the Smugmug end? There's nothing listed on http://smugmug.wordpress.com/

If I had something to list I would. Site's screaming for most, slow for some. Engineers are on it and I'm letting them work it rather than bother 'em right this moment.

Same problem here but only since last night 05/03/09. Exceptionally slow pageloads and time outs. Speed seems to increase a little bit when logged in as admin. But this doesn't help the customer. Any ideas of how long this will take to fix?

It's affecting everything including rss feeds. You can look at my website.

This situation is getting progressively worse.
I'm at 7+ minutes trying to get a gallery to load and less than half of the thumbnails are up.
Essentially the gallery is frozen although it appears to be still attempting to load.
Customers are not going to wait 2 minutes, much less over 7 minutes to get a page to load.

Although I have monitoring on my sm site that does alert me when it goes down, or performance falls below a threshold, most people don't...

READ ONLY MODE!?!
Doh! This is my biggest sales week of the year. I've got 21 galleries to create tonight, and sales over the next week will produce over 30% of my revenue for the entire year. (all in a single week)
Do what you gotta do, but this has got to work. Tonight.
I'll get the pizza delivered to the smugmug offices, since everyone should be working the late shift. Someone else can buy the beer after things are running again.

We're back right now. Read only mode, is not 'down' it means your sites are there, and working -but yes, this means you can't edit or add photos. But I need to carefully make the distinction, as we're the only site that I know of, in our space, that has this.
Down a lot? We take this very seriously, and we've got an amazing record of performance over the years. We're sorry for the spurt of read only modes and maintenance.

Believe me, we know it. But read only is an important feature so in the rare times when we do have to do work on the site, the engineers can do it while still serving up photos.
I'm really sorry we had this issue tonight! Hang in there, and thanks for your patience.

Don't feel sorry for us. All in all its extremely reliable. The great thing is that in read only mode customers can still look. It seems to be a bigger inconvience to those of us uploading. Trust me sunday and monday are the worst times for outages for me. I still have 1,000+ photos to upload. Luckily I am about 3/4's done from the weekend.
I just hope it stays back in regular mode. Going back and forth is worse than a single longer outage.

I've also noticed recently that I get a lot of time outs after the file are uploaded and I click back to gallery button. I have a 20/20 buinsess FIOS connection that I'm on and not experiencing any other slowness with. Is anything up with SM? I'm running both MAC and Windows (XP Pro, Vista 32 and Vista 64) systems.
Thanks

I'm trying to upload photos from Lightroom and I'm getting:
Error response from Smugmug:
system error (invalid album/image id)
Aborting export after 0 of 1 images successfully uploaded
I wasn't getting this error last night.
Is anyone else having a problem using the Lightroom uploader?

The SM Super Heros have always rocked :thumb . Perhaps they can put up a note like the ones that appear on your site when a new feature is available so that as soon as you login you see that there is an issue with an ETA for resolution? That would definitely reduce the number of posts like this that wind up with a life of their own and very repetitive and time consuming responses from the SM SHs when they can be focused on fix'n the issue.

There seems to just be a monstrous queue to process photos right now... I was having the same exact issue. I then gave up on Lightroom and I used the online simple uploader. Two pictures went up fine, but now they have been sitting in the processing queue for almost an hour...
I paid for SmugMug last night, I sure chose the perfect time. I love the set up of the site, but I hope these issues aren't a regular thing.

cjoconn22: It's all connected. The "system" that is housing the website service (including functionality of uploading, downloading and displaying pages and images) is right now sluggish due to what I understand to be a backlog resulting from an earlier technical issue. It goes back to the "pipe" theory and you can only get so much traffic through a connection (that includes uploading and downloading) at a time. If the pipeline becomes congested then you have slowness, just like a traffic jam at a toll booth.

Not that I don't believe you, but I would like to hear that from a smugmug employee. Also, it would be great if we could get an "All Clear" when the backlog has been thinned out. I need to send out email notification that client photos have been posted, but I'm not going to do that until that site is up to full speed.

The past two days of me being on my site has been painful due to the slowness. My galleries take at least a minute to load (there aren't that many and they are not that big), and now I upload one image (approx 3.3 meg in size) and it still isn't done processing after 5 minutes! I have noticed this getting worse over the months and certainly not a feature I enjoy putting up with...

Wow, thanks for this post. I thought I was alone and crazy. I have been slow for days, it's been really painful. So just about 30 minutes ago things were going fine, pages loading relatively fast. So about 15 minutes ago I loaded a small, 141kb image and it's still processing. I can't access it. I was also unable to upload via the "send to smugmug" tool. I did it through the web browser.
I'll sit tight as it looks like you guys are working on the issue.

Been noticing the site is slow for a few days and finally got around to checking the forum to see if there were any updates. Looks like you isolated an issue and implemented a fix... however, before I read through to the end, I tried some of the troubleshooting steps from the begining. I've attached a screenshot of the speedtest.net results for San Jose (I could get to San Fran fine).
I noticed that you guys are hosting the service for San Jose... wondering if this coincides with when people noticed a drop in performance or if you guys have been hosting this for a while.

I have been having major site speed issues for over a week now. This is happening to me on several different computers on several different network providers. I've received complaints from quite a few clients and it's beginning to become a large issue to me. A large percentage of the time I can not upload my photos, apply watermarks and customize galleries with any sort of reasonable speed, and sometimes it's unsuccessful all together. I've stuck it out for a year now, but it's growing increasingly old.

I wouldn't be so sure. It's not the middle of the night on the West Coast... Prime time for a lot of people who get their internet relaxation time before bed.
Not to mention night owl photogs like me who are most productive at night who finally got the motivation to overhaul his portfolio on smugmug only to find sluggish service and then complete downtime! :dunno

i think this is the 4th or 5th time i've seen full service outage...but i've been a smugmugger for several years now. this is definately the LONGEST outtage...
i feel bad for all you guys that are so dependant on it... 99% of my biz is on my own site (4theriders) that i created myself and host elsewhere... smugmug (seppes.com) is pretty much just where i upload "highlight" shots and do all of my printing from. it's simply an annoyance for me for the most part.
i must say though, having tried flikr and all them other photo hosting sites, occassional downtime on smugmug is WELL worth it. when it's running slow like it has the last few days, it pisses me off, i won't lie...i'd MUCH rather see the site go down completely for an hour then be back up 100% than see it running at ~10% or normal speed...
but in the long run, i KNOW that the smugvelopers/smugwizards/smugsupport will be at FULL BOOGIE making sure their customers are satisfied and up and running again ASAP.
thanks guys, for all your hard work!

I almost forgot what I did before SmugMug haha. Luckily with it being so close to Mothers Day, people want to give some photos as gifts... so they will order them no matter how inconvenient it is. Hopefully it doesn't hurt sales.
"Just write down the file names of the photos you want, and in what size and finish." *sigh*
haha, yup that is what I am doing tonight..

Can't say I can be too angry though, the previous awesome service has created a buffer...but lets see how long it lasts :)Thanks for the kind words but it's been a rough several days in SmugMug land and we're embarrassed.
The growth of our site keeps defying me. In the months after Christmas when the economy was in such a shambles and so many photo sites were experiencing big declines in traffic, this is what happened to us:
http://s3.amazonaws.com/smug/smugmug-compared.jpg
Not complaining and no excuses, we just weren't prepared for a surge like that at a time like this.
(And what I didn't post is we're up to 37 page views per person per visit. Yeow. What are they doing? I hope buying photos from you. Shutterfly is slightly ahead of us in visitors but only 6.5 page views/visit.)

:dunno

That's not really true. I can't speak for SM but I do watch the industry and, as a whole, it is suffering a decline in purchases and a few of the big boys, SM included, are also seeing increases in uploads and views.
If you are doing ad sales with views then you are stuck in a declining revenue model with an increase in costs. Not a good thing.
A subscription pay model will work if well designed and only the SM folks know about that. I would be interested to know if SM customers are more likely to buy stuff than users of Flickr and other sites.
SM appears to stay very lean and very pro-active, which will help it through the bad economic times if they are smart and a bit lucky in the company financial arena - which I think they are. I'm guessing (based upon large corporate experience with Akamai) that the Akamai move is a substantial strategic cost savings move for SM.
Overall, there will be more consolidation in this industry. Consolidation of labs have been going on for a few years, Kodak Paper and the Kodak processing biz is now under the Fuji corporate umbrella. Photo sharing sites are leaving and their customers are being taken over by others in the industry.
Everything I hear and read about SM makes me glad that I'm a customer.

I uploaded some photos but due to a backlog I suppose they are taking some time to show up in the galleries, but when I go to see the upload log, I just get a blank white screen ? Oh well, I was able to upload and Im sure they will arrive at some point (soon I hope).

Everything I hear and read about SM makes me glad that I'm a customer.Hey David,
That's pretty insightful. We're so focused in our own little world I don't know a lot about our competitors, but we've said publicly that Amazon is a very crucial partner for us. We receive 40% of our images for the week on Sunday nights and huge traffic on Mondays. Without Amazon EC2 to process the images where we can spin up more instances of image processors without owning iron and steel that sits idle and draws power and data center space the rest of the week, we'd have to have very different pricing. I don't see how we'd do video at all.
We view Akamai as an investment and we take a deep breath when we see the bill each month.
We see a lot of really clever companies like Flickr dazzle us technically, but getting it financially squared away is a much bigger challenge. Shutterfly seems to have it figured out, whcc, Bay Photo, Mpix, us, but beyond that I'm not sure if any others really do.

Hi Baldy -- long time no see. :}
Psh. How is Flickr technically dazzling?
Everytime I look at that site I get really angry, because it is *SO FREAKING HARD TO JUST VIEW PHOTOS* on it. Their awful layout drives me mad, and it's a damn shame because there are so many great photos there, including the awesome and new White House photostream.
But technically? What do they have that SmugMug doesn't? Mapping? I guess it's a touch friendlier. Better tagging? Yes, oh god yes. (Yes yes, apparently Dev is working on this. Hooray. :-)
But API-wise, I don't think they've got much on you.
The biggest thing they've got is community and eyeballs. Their userbase is huge, and likes to comment. So I guess that's good for ad revenue, but yeah, I don't really think people looking at photos really want to click on ads. Especially if they're looking at personal photos.

Hi smugmug team ...
FWIW, yesterday during the time that many were having problems with slow speed (viewing galleries, not just uploading), when I tested my connectivity using http://speedtest.net to the smugmug hosted destination, I would frequently get total failures. It would not even get past the ping latency test to then continue to the down/up speed tests. When it did work I was seeing only sporatic bursts with speeds of a few hundreds of Kbps. During that same time my connectivity to all other west coast speedtest.net destinations was normal. I tested this speed from a residential AT&T DSL line and also from a commercial, broadband testing lab based DS3 with the same results (both originated in Alabama) ..
When the browsing and uploading at smugmug cleared up last night, the connectivity to the smugmug hosted speedtest.net destination also returned to normal from these locations.
I thought it might be helpful to you to correlate the smugmug services problems yesterday with the smugmug hosted speedtest.net services.

I am also getting tired of slowness and now it looks like smugmug is down again for 2nd time today. It is getting old and I have actual customers viewing my website. I am actually thinking about switching esp since there is no packages. Photoshelter? others? Pros cons anyone?
Wow, a website goes down or in read only mode for a couple hours and it's time to abandon ship? :scratch I've only been with smugmug for about 2.5 years, but the problems have been so small that they're basically non-existent. Yeah, it's inconvenient that there's a delay being caused. I have 27 galleries to upload to another pro's account for some fundraiser work we did, but c'est la vie...these things happen. The level of service from smugmug is unparalleled.

It was only two photos but I uploaded them into 4 galleries - so basically 4 photos gone. Most uploaders (maybe even all) were not working for a couple hours last night. Depending upon the uploader, it might have either shown you an error or made you think they uploaded successfully when they didn't. See here (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=129652) for some of the discussion about it.

I'd love to have forums integrated like they do with groups, the interestingness search and a few other things like favorites. But their center of gravity was getting traffic, which they did well, and we kept looking at financial data to help guide our decisions. Sometimes that meant doing less traffic-generating stuff, but it secured our future.

Sorry Randy, according to your upload log that image took about 20 minutes to process. Looking at the photos uploaded just before/after it by other users, they processing in < 20 seconds. I'd guess your image hit some sort of a failure in the rendering the first time through and had to be redone. Just bad luck that your first test after yesterday's outage happened to hit a rendering glitch and require a second attempt. :dunno

I have also contacted the tool developer and according to my logs, nothing appears abnormal other than the SmugMug server issues.
I have tons of pictures to upload for customers and running out of patience.

Reporting from China, I am surprised that the speed of Smugmug is far faster than flickr. I am now using Smugmug as my primary photography site.
I thought flickr has a global presence, thus will be faster, but no, smugmug is MUCH FASTER! The photo loading on flickr takes 10 seconds, and smugmug only take 2 seconds.
Also I noticed Firefox loads smugmug much faster than IE, not sure why.
Thank you Smugmug!
