I downloaded smug wallet app to my iphone but i cant figure out how to upload pictures i take with my iphone to a gallery using smug wallet?
Hi Aunkster,

SmugWallet is not intended to be used to upload photos to your online galleries at this time. SmugMug itself has made an app that is perfect for this, and free, called SmugShot. This is mentioned in the App Store description for SmugWallet to try and prevent confusion, but sorry if it wasn't more clear.

SmugWallet will let you download iPhone-sized photos from SmugMug and present them in your category/subcategory/gallery structure, letting you easily carry around your gorgeous SmugMug galleries without having to manage photos through iTunes. When I sync a catagorie to my iphone how can it be deleted later on? it looks as if the only way to delete is to delete each photo individually?
An update that provides this functionality was submitted to Apple 2 days ago and I am hoping it will be available on the App Store within a week. Currently you have to delete photos individually until version 2.0 is approved and available on the App Store. Sorry!

I just came across this app by chance tonight and was thrilled - love the idea.

While I loved the smugmug website version - this app takes things to a whole new level and really allows me to download all my photos to my iphone and show them off to others when I want to -

The smugmug Safari browser version was a bit too quirky and slow, due to the Edge or 3G connection to quickly locate a particular photo to show someone - thanks for developing this and thanks to Smugmug for embracing it!

Glad you are enjoying the app. I just got word that version 2.0 has been approved, which brings video support, the ability to save photos to your camera roll, a quicker way to delete entire galleries/subcategories from SmugWallet and more!

Matt - I hope you will consider adding some type of 'guest' option - as I've told you in a separate email - I'd love to get this app installed on my mom's iphone - so she has all our family photos on it - but I don't want to keep my id/password logged in on her phone.

Hopefully this can be worked into a future update to the app - can only mean more money for you - will others buying the app...right?

I've got all my 18,000+ pics on my iphone now - love it!

Matt - I took your suggestion as a temporary work around - bought smugwallet for my mom's iphone and logged in and just installed the 1800 family photos and then changed my smugmug password so she can't add any more photos - only took about 1.5 hours to download those 1800 photos on her iphone over 3G.

I've got 20,000 on my iphone and it is only using about 1.3GB - pretty sweet!

Nice, I think this is the best solution for the time being. I am not sure that it would be good to allow the app to download public photos from anyone without a login/password. It would also be a lot of work to create settings that would restrict usage of the login/password to only specific galleries.

Excellent! Is performance of the app still pretty good? I don't have quite that many photos to test it with. :)

Anyone notice that after downloading a few hundred MB of images for SmugWallet - that the backup portion of Itunes sync now takes forever? Before downloading images - the backup in itunes only took about 10 seconds.

I have 950MB of images downloaded to my phone now - and backup takes about 6 hours.

Wow, 6 hours is pretty crazy! I have heard from someone else that after downloading a large number of photos, the next sync takes a very long time, but that it is a one-time thing. I am not sure what iTunes is doing when it backs up the iPhone, but it sounds like they copy everything from your device to your computer in case you have to restore. If you are connecting via an original USB connection, it could take even longer to transfer this data. I didn't think this was happening every time, however. Have you noticed it on repeated syncs?

Just a post to say, this app is AWESOME! What more can I say, this is the coolest app to hit SmugMug - take your entire website with you!

Finished syncing about 5265 photos to my iPhone which is using 332MB.

If you use SmugMug and have an iPhone - don't hesitate to get this app, if you don't have an iPhone, this is all the reason you need to get one!

Same here...VERY long backup times since downloading the app and syncing photos. Every single backup takes forever....

I had that same issue - I have downloaded about 21,500 images, using 1.4 gigabytes, to my phone and my intial backup took forever, over 8 hours - let it run overnight - but since then the subsequent back-ups have been less than 30-60 minutes usually.

But worth the one time long back-up to have all my photos with me and access them so quickly - beats wi-fi and 3G for sure.

I only wish the gallery names would wrap and not be truncated for longer gallery names.

I too love this App but I am having an issue. I have downloaded 15226 Photos to my phone but now it will not search for new photos...
It goes to Logging in and then retrieving album info for about 3 seconds then the Iphone goes to the home page

I tried wifi and 3g only. I can access all the images on my phone, just not the Latest wedding I shot.

I've been having this same problem. it's very annoying. I've got less than 175MB on there because I only dl the low res proofs other than pix of my son. I've thought about deleting it and reloading. Does anyone know a workaround for this? I can only try it at home since it's on an iPod.

Another alternative is the Blossom (http://kupuk.com/blossom) iPhone app.

Blossom takes a slightly different approach loading your photos as you browse them but it also caches those photos for fast access later. Depending on your needs it might be a good fit. It means you can always access your latest SmugMug photos and videos if you have WiFi or 3G available and it is very fast (faster than the Safari version).

And the next version, 1.4, will let you browse the photos of other SmugMug users or let your friends and family browse yours as well as letting you share your SmugMug photos on Facebook and Twitter from your phone.

I'll add a 'me too' to this thread. I emailed the developer over the weekend because the app seems to be trying to grab all available images - not only those galleries marked for download - and doesn't actually download any...

I hadn't used SmugWallet for a few weeks, but I tried it this weekend and it wouldn't sync any new photos to my iPod Touch. It's still broken this morning. Perhaps the site update that happened recently has broken compatibility with SmugWallet?

I was having the same problem. So I uninstalled smugwallet thinking it may have been corrupted.

Unfortunately smugwallet no longer appears to be on the app store.

Please do keep us posted. This was by far the best smugug app. All the others require you to have connection (3g or wifi).

Nothing beats being on a plane and being able to view your pics.

Please do keep us posted. This was by far the best smugug app. All the others require you to have connection (3g or wifi).
FYI, I have submitted an update to Apple that fixes the photo download issue and also provides some speed improvements and other miscellaneous bug fixes. It takes at least a week for them to approve an update, and sometimes longer. Glad you are enjoying the app (when it's working!).

I removed the software and was going to reinstall, it did not remove the data so I have 1gb of data that can not be removed. I also now can not reinstall because it is not on the app store any more. I am very VERY sad as I love this software and was trying to fix. I will NEVER COMPLAIN again. I would get an I phone JUST FOR THIS SOFTWARE!!!!!

My phone is Jailbroken so if there is a data file, I can remove manually
any info would be appreciated greatly -Fred

Hi Fred,

I don't have any experience with jailbroken phones, but if you can search for a smugmug.db file, that is located in the app's documents directory and you can delete that file along with the photos directory to remove the data. Normally, when you delete the app, it will delete all associated data.

Also, if you use iTunes, there may be a backup copy of SmugWallet located there that you can set to sync to put the app back on the phone. But it still won't solve the issue of photo downloads not working until Apple approves the update. Once the update is approved, the app will be back on the store.

Matt, Thank you for the very fast reply... it took a few minutes to a half hour to delete the data. It did do it but was using the phone and did not give it enough time. I will reinstall from my pc when I get home. Can not wait for the update and this version ROCKS, once again, thanks a bunch for the great app. Best App on my phone!

Edit, I downloaded it off of my pc but can not sync any of the files... I will eagerly wait for the update -Fred

I'm glad I found this thread! This is just a 'me too' post. The app stopped downloading... I finally removed the app from my phone & iTunes to try & reinstall it. Then it was missing from the store, bad timing!

Looking forward to the update! Fantastic app!

Feature request if you're taking them here: the app didn't auto rotate images like the built in photo app does. Any way to add that in?

Yes, I always appreciate feature requests! :) I have had this suggested one or two other times, so I may eventually build it in as an option you can turn on and off. I personally do not like the auto-rotate functionality of the native app, as I prefer to see my photos as large as possible and it is much quicker to just turn the phone and see it instantly than wait for the software to catch up. Do you prefer to just view some of the images smaller with black bars, so you aren't constantly rotating the phone, or what do you see as the advantage to auto-rotate?

The biggest advantage I see from auto-rotate is that it "works as you'd expect." Right or wrong, Apple has set a precedent with their Photo app, so anytime someone grabs the phone & sees a photo they expect it to auto rotate. I've had a lot of people shake my phone when viewing photos on your app. Yours is my default photo app that I go to so it happens quite often :clap

I'd really like the option to turn this on or off, because you are right - you get more real estate when viewing everything full screen. I've turned off auto-rotate on my camera for the same reason. (The Nikon D70 doesn't have the biggest screen to start with... Maybe I'll change this when I get 3" LCD :wink )

Glad there's an update on the way, thought it went poof or something! I love this app since it requires no post syncing data connection and all my photos on my mac are in .dng format which won't sync to the normal iphone image library. Looking forward to the update! I use SmugShot. It is free, in the app store. You can upload pics directly to your smugMug account from your iPhone if you want. Very handy.

I will look for the wallet app when it comes back.

The iPhone is a wonderful tool!

I do not think I will have much choice.... I will have to purchase this in a day or so as I can not wait any longer. I will not have space for duplicates on my iphone. Is there a way to download the site to the phone or do I have to go in every directory?

Thanks for the update, Matt!

So the app does indeed seem a bit snappier. I'm still having searching for new photos, though. I start the search, it makes it through "Logging in" and then displays "retrieving album info" very briefly before crashing. It does this 9 out of 10 times I try to search for new photos.

Any ideas?

I just tried this on my development machine and your account seemed to search for photos ok. I obviously don't have access to any password protected galleries, however. Email me at support@midnightmobility.com with your iPhone OS version and let me know a bit more about this -- it doesn't always crash at the same spot?

Good news is that the program seems able to download photos and is much 'snappier'. However, I tried a download yesterday and had the same 'bug' where the program states it only has 800 some photos to download and the downloading status window winds up at 3000+. I also left the iphone to download overnight and made no headway in finishing up the initial download of photos. I will say that the iTunes sync times are MUCH improved!

Restarted download and, 8 hours later, it was stuck at photo 1098

Restarted the sync this Am so I could watch it (what better things are there to do at 4am when you have insomnia:dunno)

Anyway, I reinput my password to make sure that could not be causing issues. On hitting sync, the 'downloading photos' bar starts off relatively slowly for the first 3 then is very rapid. Though it still shows only 868 photos to sync, it quickly goes above 868 photos downloaded. This AM, it crossed the 1098 number at which it had been stuck. It is currently over 1300 and still going. When I pause it the Smugwallet contents have not increased from the current 1910 photos.

Any suggestions?

You may want to try toggling your synced categories off and then on and then click the 'Search for Photos' button again. If that is still not working, please contact me at support@midnightmobility.com and let me know your SmugMug username and whether these images you are attempting to sync are public or not, so I can try to troubleshoot.

I have gotten word from others that this release is working, so if you are having problems, please contact me via email so I can try to troubleshoot individual situations.

I've got it running again and it is over the 9000 mark on 'downloading photos' so I'll just let it run and see what happens. If it is unsuccessful, I'll do the toggle bit.

Like I said earlier, the iTunes sync times and the function of the app in displaying photos are both much improved. Hopefully this is just a bug on my end. Interestingly, the passworded galleries are done syncing. It's some of my public landscape 'Places' shots that are still pending.

I'll post again when it's done.

Honestly, when this happens (the download count far exceeds the available to sync count), you should terminate the download. It is never going to complete at that point, as it has encountered some sort of internal failure. You should then attempt to toggle the categories/galleries off, on and then 'Search for Photos' again. If that still fails, you should send me your account username via email and let me know the galleries that are not properly syncing. This is universal advice for users of this app at this point.

I have not generally been able to accurately reproduce the error that is causing counts like that to climb way above the 'available to sync' number, aside from the recent major bug that was patched in v2.1.

Can anyone give me a rough estimate on mins/gb during iTunes sync AFTER the initial sync? I'm trying to figure out if this is a 'delay' I can live with since I frequently update contacts, music etc and wouldn't want to wait an excessive amount of time to 'sync' and run.

There really is NO delay with the new version:clap
I was pretty shocked the first time as I was getting used to the very long backups from prior versions.
I just did a sync for the first time in at least 2 weeks (thanks for reminding me:D) and it took exactly 2 minutes.

The new version offers you a choice of where you want your files stored. For fast syncs, go to Settings -> Advanced Options. Make sure the storage directory is set to Cache. If that is the case, it shouldn't matter how many gigs of photos you have on the device, as they are stored in a directory that will not be backed up to iTunes.

I've d/l'd all my bird galleries, 11759 photos in 305 galleries 724mb. It's great for sharing in the field.

Only thing I wish is to zoom in on a photo. Is there another app that would
enable this on the iphone or could this be built into Smug Wallet?

One way we can pack so many photos into a small space on your iPhone is to really shrink down the size when we download them. Downloading the large photos you could zoom would both take a lot longer and use up a lot more space. That said, there are various routes I could take to allow this.

One would be to let you choose the size photo to sync and decide on the tradeoff for speed/space vs size. Another would be to let you download large versions of specific photos you wish to zoom occasionally. And a third would to let you do zooming when the network is available and live download a larger copy to zoom.

I saved one to camera roll and got enough zoom, ~50%,
without losing much detail or focus. That's about all I need.
Sure wish the same zooming capability was applicable that
the default Photos app has.

I would like this option as it would naturally only download the images that lend themselves to zooming, like a group photo with lots of little heads.

With the other two options, you'll download large sizes of too many photos that you might never need to zoom in on.

If you could tap to temp load a full image for zoom but would not want larger sized images on the iphone. Truthfully, I am just plain happy right now!!!!

Not the first request for this. What don't you like about the effect and what would you prefer instead?

First off, I use and love the Ken Burns effect on the slide show that plays back from a computer onto my big flatscreen LCD HDTV. Works great for me there. But somehow it just doesn't work for me on the iPhone. It could be the short slide duration, or that your eye is already working hard enough to see the tiny images that adding motion just stresses out the eye more. One big thing I noticed: It's not fun to track the switch from a horizontal to vertical image when Ken Burns is on, because your eye tries to read the second image while at the same time adjusting for the fact that you have two semitransparent images both sliding and zooming thanks to Ken Burns, and on top of all that, the new image is rotated 90 degrees! By the time my eye gets oriented to the new image, it's already fading into the next image.

What I would prefer is a simple crossfade, and the addition of slide duration control.

I might be OK with Ken Burns if it worked like it does on a computer: All photos are locked to the same orientation, and the duration/transition speed is controllable. You could even improve on Mac OS X Ken Burns. It has a problem where you sometimes don't see much of a vertical photo because its random panning goes across the short side. If you set it so that photos are always panned along the long side, it would actually work better than the Mac's version.

I updated the app, but I'm still having sync issues. It downloaded all but 60 of my images (only have about 400 total), and then it started doing that infinite downloading thing... I've let it run all the way up to "Photo 2000" before pausing and quitting because it never downloads my images, just keeps spooling.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Try what I did above - toggle off all galleries. Quit the app. Then toggle back on.

Yeah, this is what I would suggest. Toggle the gallery or category that is causing problems off and then on (you shouldn't need to quit app). Then go back to Sync screen and click "Search for Photos". Then try syncing again. If there are still problems, email me directly with your username and describe which gallery it is: support@midnightmobility.com.

Sorry, I have one more feature request: An option to toggle hidden photos, to duplicate the experience of a non-logged-in visitor.

I was showing a gallery to someone in SmugWallet and realized they were seeing all 27 photos in the gallery, which means they were also seeing the "hidden" second-string photos instead of just the polished, trimmed-down 21-photo sequence seen by non-logged-in visitors. Didn't see a way to show just the non-hidden photos in SmugWallet.

To the dev,

I was so excited about this app and was about to buy it on the store and then I read the app store comments carefully....

I would purchase this app immediately if there was an option to zoom into a photo. I am also aware there are those that have thousands of photos and don't want said option, because their portable library would take up significantly more space. Finally I wouldn't be happy with a zooming feature that required a network connection, the immediacy of viewing local photos is a real plus for many reasons.

I'd suggest a per gallery sync preference setting that defaulted to 480 x XXX pixels as currently implemented, and then had 2 - 4 optional choices for larger sizes. x2 x4, etc.

I wonder how many app store "lurkers" desire a zoom feature?

Just bought the app and spent whole night downloading 10,000+ photos (only take up 700+MB).

One question. It is not possible to email a particular photo in the Smugwallet right ? I dun see any way to do so...

In-app photo attachment on an email is not currently possible. You can either email the links to the photos on SmugMug or you can save the photos from SmugWallet to the camera roll and then email the photos themselves from the default Photo app.

In-app photo attachment on an email is a feature I hope to add to a future release.

I usually just press the button on top and the home button at the same time to take a screenshot and then send it to an email once in the camera roll. Then I delete. It works really well for me:clap

I would rather be able to go to the actual page on the site to work with the actual image online....I do not want bigger pictures on my Iphone, but I do understand when you said Preferences setting for default size.... the thing is that you can usually get a wifi or 3g connection for online where as making the images larger on the Iphone would take up much more space for a small amount of photos.

Of course if it was implemented, I could just opt not to make the sizes bigger.....Just saying a click to the actual image online I think would be great.

Great app - love the functionality - nice work Matt.

Now a request - You can only enable galleries by category so it is top down - would love to be able to skip a level. What I mean.:

I shoot sports and have categories set up by sport (like soccer) which I have 40 or so sun-cats and 100s of galleries - If enable the category to get to the subcategory it detects all new galleries and I add every week. Instead - if I could do the subcategory or just the gallery it would be great. Ability to do bottom up I guess...

Hrmm... Maybe I'm confused, but if you have a category synced, you can drill into it on the settings screen and then toggle specific subcategories and galleries themselves off. True, it will recognize any new galleries added to a synced category/subcategory combination, but it will ignore them for those subcategories that are not set to sync.

I want to get to a sub-category without turning on a category. For instance:
Soccer
--Town 1
--Town 2
.
.
.
--Town 100

I want to go to town 56 and 79 and sync them without having to turn off all of towns 1 - 100

and then the same with galleries in a town (I have some towns with 50 ~ 60 galleries)

so instead of turning all off except the one I want the choice to only turn on the ones I want.

I love Smugmug and love Smugwallet. I agree with all the comments re Matt's fantastic support and response time. He replies to emails at lightning speed.

I would love the 'option' to download higher resolution images. I find the quality to be just 'ok'. Zoom . . yes please. In fact make it behave like the camera roll as near as possible.

From earlier posts in this thread I see that : -
Eoren1 has 2762 photos in 36 galleries taking up 173mb = average 62.6k
Allen has 11759 photos in 305 galleries taking up 724mb = average 61.5k

I have 1338 photos in 46 galleries taking up 19.8mb = average 14.8k ????????

Why is Smugwallet only downloading my images as 14k whereas the norm seems to be circa 60k?
Are there Smugmug settings I should be tweaking?
Any thoughts?

It should probably integrate with the Feature Photo option in Smugmug if it doesn't already (haven't looked) so if the owner has already set a Feature Photo for a gallery it would use that.

I've had no problems with the new cache method - love it - has greatly reduced my back up times- use to take 6 horus to back up my phone - which has about 22,000 images - now it about 30-45 minutes.

The initial load of thumbnails is quick but as I scroll down the page - they pop in one by one - but it has always done that - regardless of the phone or version of the app.

I do love this app - one of my favorites - I do wish they would fix the gallery name issue - it runs of the page for some of my gallery names that are long - they need to wrap instead

Right, yes but on larger albums, the tn stops popping after a while. I can get about 40 to 80 (really seem random) images automatically pop one by one, fairly quickly, then it just hangs...

Anyone has problem with the thumbnails showing up? I am using the Cache method, but the thumbnails still come out one by one on my 3Gs. And every now and then, the thumbnails stop showing up. It sorts of get stuck. I can 'restart' the thumbnail showing up by going into one of the photo and then back out to the tn view. Is this a known bug?
I haven't had anyone else report this problem, but would like to investigate. Contact support@midnightmobility.com and let me know more details about when it hangs and if it is easy to reproduce. Also, did you have a previous version or was 2.1 the first version of SmugWallet you used?

I downloaded 17500 photos but for the last week it will crash when trying to update any new photos. Did I break it again? Not going to delete and try again (I learned my lession last time).
Any ideas (tried to update around 100+ times).

Send me your SmugMug username to support@midnightmobility.com and I will look into it. There also seems to be a bug with the SmugMug API right now that is returning the wrong category names. I am not sure if that is related or not.

Problem downloading for past 2 days.
This is a recurrence of the prior issue: app tries downloading images but goes up to 7000 or so without actually grabbing any.
I'll try to uncheck and then add back the galleries but wanted to mention it in case it was a result of some recent changes in the smugmug architecture. I saw that J Friedl's export to smugmug plugin for Lightroom has had some issues the past few days as well.

Still having issues :scratch
I unchecked all galleries. Ran a sync to register as 0 photos and deleted galleries already on the iPhone. Put in my password again to try to force a reload/reconnect. Then rechecked galleries and let it run overnight. The program seems to be able to grab all subgalleries in my People superdirectory (which holds galleries of my two kids then broken down by month of the year). It failed to download my selected 'Places' galleries. It run up to 7000 photos on the downloaded area but, when I stopped it, only 1900 were actually on the iPhone.

Wondering the same thing...
Tried everything to get my 'places' shots to sync to no avail. Unchecked galleries, uninstalled and reinstalled the app...nothing works :bash. For some reason I can sync my 'people' and 'things' galleries but not the 'places' ones. The 'people' ones are more locked down than any others so it really doesn't make any sense to me.

Hi derf,

Glad to hear it is working again! There was an issue with the API at one point that was causing it to return null values for the gallery titles if there were certain characters in the title. I alerted SmugMug and I think they have fixed it.

Just started using this app, and it's great. However, I have experienced one issue that causes the app to crash.

In the advanced options, I have the video sync set to 'Automatic - Large'. When I attempt to sync a video that's approx 410 MB (it's that size on my machine, not sure what it is after smugmug converts it), it will attempt to sync, but then crash after a minute or two.

Anyone else having this issue?

I also like this app alot - I have over 29,000 photos on my phone - just amazing when you think about it -

I do hope the developer does something to resolve the issue of long gallery names not wrapping - they get cut off after about 30 characters or so - so it's hard to see the full name of a gallery that exceeds this limit - even though there is plenty of room for it to wrap -

I also hope that he creates an app for non-smugmug users - so my family and friends iwth iphones can install the app and load galleries - this would be great, any plans for that??

there are few things:

1) Dunno is it me, network, or my 3GS... very very slow syncing...
I am on my 2nd day of apps... just downloaded 2114 pics off my 19,xxx pics album... From the impression of everyone that it should workout in matters of hours.. not days?? :huh

2) Truncated directory/folder names - I date my photo shoots with catagories and shoots and locations - which I cannot see any more
ie:

Animals & Insect > 2009_07_07 - Hokaido - ?????
(anything after doted lines are cannot be seen)

hoped that next version can solve this problem?

3) # photos downloaded =/= numbers seen on galleries... how come?

4) will there be any future version that could be shared via social network (ie: facebook) and SMS, etc?

Working on a new version that will allow zooming, syncing larger versions of the files and work with the new smart galleries. It will also have an auto-rotate option, as that has been highly requested. May still be a couple weeks until I can get it to Apple.

Right now it is setup so you can sync larger versions of the ones you want to zoom. You want to be able to zoom in on the small versions? You won't get extra detail, it will just blur the pixels when enlarging them...

Not sure what the auto-rotate will do but I like my portraits to fill the screen, I can easily rotate the phone. Hope it's a toggle to turn off.
It is a toggle, as I too prefer to just turn the phone. A lot of people like the way the default Photos app behaves where the photos are rotated to the way you are holding the device.

One complaint with Smart Galleries is the gallery Smart name. Not nearly long enough. Would rather have the real gallery name wrap.
Smart galleries are the new thing SmugMug introduced that let you collect photos from other galleries and other users into your own. That is what I was talking about. Although, I have also already made it so that longer gallery names will appear in the new version, instead of being truncated.

I might have missed it, but is it possible to get photos *out* of SmugWallet and *into* Camera Roll? My reason for doing this is to make it easy to get pics from Smug into Bill Atkinson's PhotoCard (a *great* iphone app), in order to e-m and snail-mail photo postcards. SmugWallet looks like a great app just by itself (I just purchased, and it works fine), but it might also be a nice "in-between" tool for getting photos out of Smug and into other applications.

There is no way to export - but you can do a screen capture - by pressing the home button and the on/off button simultaneously which will put an screen shot into you camera roll.

I'm having a slight problem with my smugwallet.. One of my galleries will only sync 21 of the 24 photos in the gallery to the phone.

Delete the app from your iPhone and then reinstall from the App Store. The app store button may say "Purchase" again, but the App Store won't double bill you for the same app (as long as you use the same account you used when purchasing it initially).

AH HA! I think I figured it out. it's the new smart galleries stuff. The 3 photos in question have keywords that include them in another gallery. You must have an optimization that checks to see if you've already gotten a file that is causing this. Those photos are in my smugwallet, they are just not in the gallery I thought they were in because of this.

So now, I guess we need a feature request :) Where we can choose to sync the same file multiple times if it's in multiple galleries (which never happened before smugmug added smart galleries)

OK, smart gallery/collected photos do not currently work, but I do have them working in the new version. You sync the file once and it appears in all the galleries that reference it. I just need to do some final testing and hope to release it in the next week or so to Apple.

I thought I looked for that possibility when I was testing your gallery, so I'm going to go back and make sure it is all working in version 3.0.

Apple has approved SmugWallet version 3.0, which will be a free update for anyone who has already purchased the app. Included are some highly requested features:

- Updated to work with Smart Galleries and Collected Photos
- Added option to auto-rotate photos to proper orientation
- Added ability to zoom photos and download larger size
- Can now export video to camera roll on supported devices
- Bug fix: No longer crashes on download of very large videos
- Many minor bug fixes and improvements

After messing around with the SDK for a few days, I can say that I do intend to make an iPad version of this app, but it won't be available for the iPad App Store debut, as the deadline for initial submissions is tomorrow.

I'm looking at downloading this soon but was wondering if it's possible to edit titles, descriptions, and keywords for photos and then sync that back with the online photos? I need to do a whole revamp of my keywords and it would be really awesome to be able to do this while on the go on my iphone instead of just at home. Is this possible or could it be added in the future? This isn't possible on the mobile website version of smugmug is it?

At this time, SmugWallet does not make any changes to your SmugMug account. It also does not even sync individual photo titles, descriptions or keywords. I'm not sure if I'll make it be able to interact with your account in the future or not, but I'll add it to the feature request list. Thanks,

I just had a report from another user of a syncing problem and now it doesn't work for me. Let me check with SmugMug to see if they have changed anything or if their API server is down at the moment.

I do have a request. An option to start in either camera or album.
Sounds like you are talking about SmugShot instead of SmugWallet, as SmugWallet does not use the camera or upload photos.

Sounds like you are talking about SmugShot instead of SmugWallet, as SmugWallet does not use the camera or upload photos.

I just had a report from another user of a syncing problem and now it doesn't work for me. Let me check with SmugMug to see if they have changed anything or if their API server is down at the moment.

Today I also got an email from another user with the same issue of the Holidays category not syncing. Took a closer look and somehow my code was actively filtering out this category based on the ID. I have no idea how/when that line got put in there, but I will submit an update shortly to fix this issue. For now, no albums are going to be synced from the Holidays category until I issue a fix. I'm very sorry about this!

My guess is that this is related to a specific gallery in your account. I suggest you toggle some of the categories' sync off in the settings menu to try to narrow down where this is happening. SmugWallet currently only supports a single login -- sorry!

Also, as an FYI to everyone else who may read this, SmugWallet v3.1 will not download photos on iPhone OS 4.0 beta at this time (only Beta 1 tested so far). I have a fix and it will be released at least in time for the official iPhone OS 4.0 release if the iPhone OS itself does not remedy this issue (It's a change in behavior in the beta OS which may be fixed).

Can you clarify which app you are using on your iPad? We didn't write the SmugMug app for the iPad, but it should be possible to run SmugWallet on the iPad. That doesn't sound like what you are doing, however, so please clarify. You may want to bring this up with SmugMug themselves if you are using the official iPad app.

I submitted this idea / request via support with respect to the iPad app, but it would be valuable for this app too.

I don't have either device, but I would consider giving Steve Jobs some money if this were possible:

I like to be able to review proofs from an Event with a client and "favorite" images they want to submit for further processing in person. The iPad seems like it would be a good device to do this. The iPhone would be just fine as well.

If I could then review the favorites back at home in the browser, I'd figure out a way to sync up the files on SmugMug with my DAM software and start toiling.

I'm guessing Safari could do this, but I think the dedicated app would be more adept at it since I could spool the images and use them offline (if I get the functionality of the app correctly).

I'm a new iPhoner and long time Smug Mugger. Just got my iphone 4 yesterday. I'm syncing about 5,000 photos. I'm using the large resolution instead of the 480MP because of the i4's higher res screen.

Anyways my issue is the sync. It syncs about 100 photos, give or take a few, and then exits the application. This makes it a bit time consuming since I can't just leave it go unattended and presumably my sync is taking a bit longer at the higher resolution. Any suggestions on what I might try to speed this up?

I presume there is no way to format the files/folders on a desktop then sync over usb to the iphone is there?

Sorry about this -- getting a lot of reports like this on iOS 4.0. I have been out of town, but plan on debugging this and getting out a fix as soon as I can once I return. This may be a couple weeks (since Apple seems to be taking a week or so to approve updates), and I am very sorry for the annoyance and delay!

Also going to look into background downloading and some other requested features.

Hi Allen,

I have heard from a few people that they lost all of their photos. I believe this is happening when they do a full restore to upgrade to iOS 4.0 (maybe the only way). When this happens, it backs up the contents of your phone, but by default, SmugWallet stores your photos so they are not backed up (otherwise, it slows every sync process).

Before upgrading to iOS 4, I recommend you run SmugWallet and go to the 'Advanced Settings' on the 'Settings' tab. There you can change the Storage Directory from the 'Cache' default to 'Documents'. Once you have done that, and given it time to move the files, perform a sync with iTunes which should also backup your photos. It is my hope that with this process you will not lose your downloaded files. Once upgraded to iOS 4, you should then be able to switch it back to Cache to get quick syncs again.

Please let me know your experience and whether this works to keep your photos. Thanks,

All my downloaded photos are still there after doing an iOS4 upgrade on my iPhone 3GS (well, I didn't check EVERY photo, but spot checked several and all seemed there).

I'm not sure of what all the different upgrade methods are. I just connected to iTunes and when it said there was an OS upgrade I just let it do its thing.

Were you required to perform a full restore along the way or did it just seem to upgrade the OS? I honestly haven't tried and don't know for sure why some people are losing their photos on upgrade. My best guess was a full restore and the storage directory set to Cache, but it certainly could be something else as well...

That's exactly what happened in my case, just to clarify. When I did the initial upgrade (and before I had to restore) the photos carried right over without issue. So, I guess as long as you don't have to wipe and reload because of a operating system error it should work just fine.

Thought I'd throw this out there just in case anyone else was concerned, I didn't really state that in my initial comment.

+1 to the download issue

I have submitted a fix for the download issue that causes a crash after 100 - 200 photos synced. Unfortunately, it took Apple almost 10 days to approve my last fix, so I am not sure how quickly this one will happen.

+1 to the need/hope for background downloading

This is definitely something I want to add, but since I haven't done any iOS 4 development yet, it will take some time to figure out and handle properly. Therefore, I just wanted to get the bug fix released ASAP, so the app is at least functioning as well as it used to, and then look into adding new features in the near future. Thanks to everyone for the suggestions and feedback.

Thanks for taking care of the bug fix so quickly! Apple must have a huge backlog of updates to go through, hopefully they'll get to yours soon.

When I ran my iOS upgrade, a restore wasn't required, so it must only cause the cache to get wiped if an error during the process requires a full restore.

Apple has approved SmugWallet v3.3 which is a minor bug fix to prevent crashing mid-way through photo sync. Please let me know if that issue still occurs on your device.

Version 4.0 is in the works, with increased resolution for iPhone 4, slideshow options and additional enhancements planned.

This is a fantastic app, well done. great implementation, easy to use.

I just got an iPad as well (the greatest device ever made that no-one actually needs) and it would be great if it were iPhone/iPad optimised.

One small)ish) feature request would be to download/e-mail from a photo view as well as at gallery view.

Two, two small(ish) feature requests! OK so this one probably isn't so trivial. To be able to download an original to the photo roll when viewing a photo. I'm looking at puchasing something like "Photo fx Ultra for the iPad". Imagine browsing the galleries, picking a favoutie, downloading, applying effects and then using SmugShot to upload back to a "Processed" gallery, that in turn syncs to SmugWallet. Pretty groovy!

Let's see if I can explain myself in what I was expecting from an app of these.

When I shoot during the night in poor light conditions and I want to make loooong exposures I find that my camera stops at 30" as maximum.

As I want to keep the Exposure Value (EV) correct I am needing a way to calculate it with precision.
I downloaded two programs from the iTunes and I found them not doing what I wanted.
Shame: one of them stopped at 30 seconds !
May be it's just me or my ignorance or... both.
I understand that it is not practical to have to keep looking among a couple of situations looking for what is supposed to be the right EV.

Let me give you a quick example:
I am on the field and I read the light and it goes like this:
ISO 100 - 15 sec exposure - f/4

But if I want to use f/11 I must change the other parameters.
I light my torch on the iPhone because it is dark and take my table from the pocket and read that I have to change the exposure to 2 minutes keeping the ISO

I was expecting that the apps would help me but just confused me until I decided to build this table. I am only showing you a small part of the table as it is much broader...

Any corrections ? Am I wrong ? Where ?

The app you are looking for is called Photobuddy . It is amazing...helps me at night to find the moon (or sun) info with rise and setting, then I can easily find hyper-focal length with the fstop and zoom used. Then I can punch in the settings with the high ISO and wide open Fstop and then make it sayyyyy a 15 min exposure and it will let me choose what setting to change to make it (what your looking for) It will help me with Flash guide numbers, depth of field, Has Bracket info times and all completely adjustable.

You should be able to figure out easily the settings for long exposures in your head but this makes it much easier.

I love this program and use it almost as much as my Smugwallet... MY MOST USED APP with nothing close second!

Until DSLR's have a Geotag, I can use this for now to take a snapshot with my iPhone or I can take a picture

jailbroke my phone and downloaded it for free. After a quick few days I realized how much it was
worth and did not care if it was $.99 cents or $10, I deleted the app and ordered it from the app

way about this app, $.99 or $50, I love Smugwallet and if you are thinking of purchasing it, do

I'm super happy with the SmugWallet app as well. When I travel overseas I use my photos to communicate where there are language barriers. Waiting for a photo to load is not something most people in the forests of Chiang Mai would be willing to wait for or for that matter, know what they are waiting for...lol

Yeah, there is some weird bug with iOS 4 that I am having a very difficult time debugging related to the zooming issue. That is the major thing holding me back from releasing an update that supports the iPhone 4 high-res screen. I've got multiple projects, but this is something I am looking into and hope to release a fix for soon.

My impression on what it does is something that "I think I read somewhere" that it will auto rotate the picture so that it's 'full screen' all the time regardless of the orientation of the iphone. If that's the case, I'm not seeing it do that. Can you let me know if that's what is suppose to happen ?

I see that you have some iPhone 4 fixes coming..

Also, if you were ever going to expand capabilities, it'd be nice if you could transfer down keywords and allow filtering or searching through spotlight based on those keywords. yeah, that'd be neat.

Yeah, was going to mention that, but you beat me to it! iOS has a thing called Local Notifications so the app just checks for remaining background time to complete syncing and if there is less than 100 seconds available, it will alert you that you are about to run out of time, but can resume to gain another 10 minutes.

So I purchased this app a couple days ago and started to syn my photos. Then today, the app will not start at all. I've tried rebooting my iphone several times, end tasking the app and even tried deleting it and reinstalling it to no avail. Please help.

I have no idea what's going on, but I'm going to look into it. Considering that there were no complaints about this for weeks now and then this morning I had 10 messages in my inbox, I am guessing something changed on the SmugMug site to cause this, but I don't know yet.

As a followup, SmugMug changed an API response that SmugWallet relies on. I am hoping they can fix this soon:

Fixing it on SmugMug's end is the quickest way forward, and I assume it is an oversight at this point. If they can't do it, I can code a workaround, but it takes about a week for Apple to approve updates lately.

Unfortunately, that is the case. The bug caused a corrupted database in SmugWallet if you synced while the bug was live. In cases like this, where you have too many photos to resync, I could send you a special build to fix it. Email me at support@midnightmobility.com. Otherwise, delete the app and reinstall/resync to fix it. You won't be charged twice. Sorry!

I have smug wallet on my Iphone 4. It worked for a while, but recently when I tap the icon the screen goes blank, like it is opening the app, but then returns to the "desk top" screen without opening the app (at least as far as I can tell). I have the latest updates to the OS (which might actually be the problem).

I have reported this through the app store...any one else with this problem?

there was a post about this - I had to delete the app and reinstall it from the app store to fix the issue - that will take care of it - unfortunately you'll need to redownload your photos again.

Yes you can select galleries and even delete on your iPhone individual images you don't want to gave in it.

But even so, I have 2k images in 96 galleries on my iTouch and they only take 174MB of space of my half full 32GB.

And I have a ton of apps and tunes.

There are a few apps around i.e. SmugView, Blossom. Not tried any of those so I cannot comment. I'm just ensurng I am getting the right app. At the moment I am using Smugmug's mobile site.

I installed the app last night.
This morning, via the app, I signed in and SmugWallet displayed all my Categories etc. I then proceeded to select only 2 galleries of about 10 pics. I hit the sync button then I pressed the 'Search' button to search and download. SmugWallet displayed a connection error of some sort. Cannot remember the exact wordings. Now when I try to hit the search button, nothing happens.
Any clues?

I am so thrilled with SmugWallet!! What a perfect way to have all my photos on my iphone. Thank you a million times for building this fantastic app.

I do have a couple feature requests after downloading nearly 15k photos/137 galleries/1GB.

-Scroll or wrap long gallery names. I have several private galleries that have the same name as my public gallery, but end in "COMPLETE". These are just unedited, unretouched backups of all the jpgs from a shoot. I don't want to download those. It's difficult to determine the difference between the two galleries to choose the right one to sync.

-This is probably unrealistic, but it would be amazing if there was a way to download all the photos locally on my computer and then sync to my iphone via itunes. Seems to me that would be much faster and less prone to breakage (though admittedly, I have had very few problems doing it through my iphone)

-Finally, I continually have 6 photos in 4 galleries that will not sync. Is there any way to determine which photos they are, or at least which galleries they come from? As I said above, I have 15K photos in 137 galleries so far and still going.

None of these are deal breakers for me...this app is amazing...but I thought they were worth mentioning.

I did reboot and it solved it for 2 photos. It still shows 4 photos in 2 galleries available to download, but will not download them.

I am a relatively new user of SmugWallet....and like it quite a bit.

One thing that, to me, is missing, is the ability to show the EXIF metadata.

Are there plans to add this in a future release?

I have tried to update my iPad and it tells me there are 47 images to download, however, the download continues through all 47 then it says download failed and I get none of them.

I have an iTouch that has had smugwallet installed for about a month. I love having all my photos on it, it's a great app.
But....
I've tried to download some new galleries in the past week or so, and it doesn't seem to search for photos. When I touch that phrase, it does nothing, So now, I can't retrieve anything new.

Am I supposed to have to log in or something to get it to sync? It doesn't ask me to log in. It did allow me to update one or two times after the initial installation, but I can't remember what the process for retrieving images was when it actually worked.

One thing that has worked for others in this situation is to toggle any categories that you have set to sync on your Settings screen to off and then back to on. Let me know if that fails,

It shows you still have 187 photos in 47 galleries to sync? Hrmm... That is odd, I'm not entirely sure what is going on there, and I'm sorry I can't offer a solution.

let me quickly jump in and say that your app is awesome! And it looks killer (besides the icon, I just dont like the green SM :D ^^).

Adding the option to display the EXIF data (at least camera, shutter speed, aperture, focal length) would be very nice.

I'm having thumbnail generating issues on my iTouch using IOS 5, just installed. Square never seem to show and original, some show for a bit, then stop.

Have tried reboot of iPod. I gave 2453 images in 104 galleries. Was fine before OS upgrade.

I've generally had the same issue with the dead images. I recently rebuilt my whole image on my phone and ended up with 3 dead images in one gallery. Unfortunately, you can't tell what gallery it is complaining about. I've generally just lived with it... Love the app...

I wanted to write a quick note for people who rely on SmugWallet and are upgrading to iOS 5. There are a couple of issues that I am seeing starting to show up. The first is that people are reporting that the thumbnails are not showing up in galleries, but you can click on where they would be and the photos are still there. I will get this fixed and submitted to Apple asap.

The second issue I am just learning of is that Apple has changed the way the iPhone / iPad storage is working in iOS 5: http://www.marco.org/2011/10/13/ios5-caches-cleaning

The short story is that if you store the photos in Cache (which is the current default), then when your storage begins to fill up, the iPhone or iPad may automatically delete some files in that directory (not good). The alternative is the Documents directory, but in that case, your iTunes backups will slow down a lot and that data will also be backed up to iCloud (disabling this app from backing up to iCloud is suggested). There is really no alternative to the way the file storage used to work on the iPhone / iPad devices, and I am not sure whether this will be able to be fixed easily going forward, but I will try to stay on top of the latest news. You can switch between the Cache and Documents directory in the Advanced Options menu of the Settings screen and pick your poison.

Thanks for the prompt work Matt, I find myself using this little app to show people what I can do and they ALL like what they see on the iPhone, but without the thumbnails, its hard to find what I want to show them. Its a great little app when its working.

Thanks for your patience. I submitted the 4.1 update of SmugWallet to Apple for their approval. Not sure of current store approval times, but my guess is approximately one week if they don't reject it for some reason. The update will fix the missing thumbnail issue without the need for a re-sync. Sorry for the inconvenience!

I have some questions about the Autoclean issue. Trying to decide which way to set the switch.

If some photos are deleted due to Autoclean, is there any notification of it or any indication in the user interface, or do we just stumble across missing photos or galleries the next time we try to view them?

Questions for if we set to Cache

If iOS deletes photos or galleries from the cache, what is the exact consequence for the SmugWallet galleries on the device? Suppose for example that I have enabled specific galleries for syncing and iOS deletes some photos, including at least one entire gallery. Is the fix to simply re-sync, and the exact gallery selections will all be restored, or will I have to go back and remember which galleries were enabled, and then re-select and re-sync?

Will the galleries lose metadata and special actions? For example if I downloaded high-res images for just two photos in a gallery and iOS deletes them, will re-syncing restore the high-res instances, or do I have to remember which photos they were and re-download the high-res versions?

Question for if we set it to Documents

In iOS 5, Apple rewrote large portions of the syncing code to enable wifi syncing and background syncing (you are no longer locked out of the device while it's syncing). Has anyone noticed, in the course of all this rewriting, is iOS any faster at backing up Documents? Because if it is not as slow as before, maybe I will set it to Documents and not worry about Autoclean consequences.

I've read in another thread, that others have this problem too.
I would love to find out in this thread, what is causing this & how to handle it.

I had 11 PNG images (screenshots) that didnt want to sync.
I identified these images, downloaded them to my computer, opened them in Photoshop, saved them for web as JPEG, and re-upped them to SmugMug.

For me, these would be completely new files. For SmugWallet not. :dunno
The exact same 11 JPEGs wouldnt sync. Strange.

I tried restarting my iPhone, turned the gallery off & on again. Re-Synced it.
No success. :cry
