Has anyone intalled IE 8? It doesn't seem to like working with Smugmug. It even does weird things when you try to modify the CSS. I just started playing with it so I don't know the full extent of all the "breaks". I know it messes up the 2x2 subcatagory page setup.

>>>>> UPDATE: In order to have the CSS page function as it did in the past, you have to click IE8's compatability button. It states that in the compatibility view "Websites designed for older browsers will often look better, and problems such as out-of-place menus, images, or text will be corrected." <<<<<

>>>>> Does this mean that Smugmug is not designed to work with IE8 which as we speak is being installed automatically on all my customers computers???? HELP!!! <<<<<

Ok can you more clearly list out your issue? I'm not understanding. Lay the problem out, and direct us helpers to a page in question, so we can view your CSS and your HTML if needed.

Issue 1 - I have my subcategory pages setup with the 2x2 customization. After IE8 was installed on my computer, the gallery names on that page are out of alignment. If I click the compatibility button in IE8 everything goes back to normal.

Example page - http://sunglo.smugmug.com/Photo%20Journalism

Issue 2 - When I try to modify the CSS the cursor suddenly jumps to an unrelated line. Again, if I click the compatibility button in IE8 it functions as it normally would.

It also skewed my gallery descriptions, but I'm in the process of fixing those. It's html code.

There may be more issues, but this is what I've found so far. I need to get this fixed since the vast majority of my customers will not understand what the compatibility button is for and worse will blame me for the problem.

It may be my coding, but I really don't know how I'm going to fix all those years of changes to my site...UGH!

Phil

>>>EDIT<<< Here's another minor issue (won't affect my customers). When you modify a description in the gallery window, it skews everything on the page. If you hit refresh after you save the changes, it brings everything back to normal.

To be clear, SmugMug fully supports IE6, IE7, IE8 and Firefox and Safari.

IE8 looks the same as Firefox3...
I'm not an expert in the type of code you're using, it's not very standard here :(
I'm sorry - let's wait for some your experts - now they know that FF3 looks the same as IE8, they'll be better able to help.

Not sure what your statement means. My customer don't have Firefox.

The page was working in IE7, IE8 was installed and it broke. As far as I can tell, I didn't do anything to break it.

I was able to fix my gallery descriptions by change my table width from 900px to 954px. Don't know if it's a similar issue here. What ever the issue is, it also affects the CSS portion of your site-wide Customization page and your gallery description modification window.

Andy,

Here's the weird thing, if you click the compatibility button next to the refresh button in IE8 the page displays normally.

Really? Your code is broken in the browsers that 40 +% of visitors to SmugMug use (Firefox, Safari) --- you'd be surprised at what your customers have :D

Let's wait till some experts can help. It's not IE8's fault, I promise.

That doesn't surprise me when your talking about general visitors. But nope, my customers are mostly in the corporate and local government worlds so they're a slave to the IT folks...IE all the way.

OK, regardless of this, it's not an IE8 issue. It's a code issue. Need some helpers.

Andy,

Through trial and error, I was able to resolve my IE8 issue. My site now works with IE7, IE8, and Firefox. I don't have a way to test Safari. Looks like IE8 handles alignment options different than IE7. To me it seems to work more like Firefox now.

Have fun,

Phil
