Hi everyone.
I like to know if this is possible? I know I would use 1600 iso, shutter speed 4000, and having the flash set on +1.
What do you think be pretty good for catching smoke? birds in flight?

If you are using a Canon or Nikon speedlight then technically, yes you can. The thing that you need to keep in mind is that as the shutter speed exceeds the natural flash sync speed the flash compensates by popping weaker and weaker. Smoke can be captured very easily without shooting over 1/100s. Birds in flight, you're looking at another problem completely. For the flash to provide any illumination above and beyond what the sun is providing that flash will have to be ungodly close to the bird. Besides that, most birds can be frozen by 1/500s.
I shoot Sony, but the HVL-56AM is comparable to the 580EX and the SB800. It has to be within two or three feet of the subject at 1/4000s in order to provide anything more than fill in sunlight.
