Presets and watermarking

I noticed that when I apply a preset with a watermark option to galleries, existing photos do not get watermarked despite the gallery having it enabled. If I manually watermark the gallery, then all the photos reflect the new watermark within a couple of minutes.

Is this the designed behavior? Can I not batch update all galleries / all photos with a new watermark easily?

That is correct. Changing the watermark for a gallery only affects the watermark applied to future uploads. If you want to change the watermark on the existing photos, you have to apply the new watermark to them in the watermarking maintenance screen (Tools/Many Photos/Watermarking).
