What types of sports are you shooting? Indoor/outdoor? Day/night?

Probably the most popular/versatile is the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM.
Although I use the primes; 200mm f/2.8L and the 135mm f/2L.

I agree the question is too vague. Some sports practically require a 300/2.8 or even a 400/2.8, whereas other sports beg for an 85/1.8.

what type of sports will you be shooting?

when i first started out i primarily used 70-200 2.8 and it worked great. however for sports the faster the shutter speed the better at stopping action. therefore i have gone primarily to primes for faster shutter speed.

for me: 135 2.0, 85 1.8, 200 1.8 (with 1.4x at times), and 300 4.0 are my most used lenses for sports.

indoor basketball or volleyball: 135 2.0 and 85 1.8
night time high school football: 200 1.8
baseball: 300 4.0

Like the others have mentioned, IT ALL DEPENDS.

I shoot outdoors extreme action sports - skiing, downhill biking, dirt jumping, etc.

I started off thinking I need as much tele & aperture as possible and got the 70-200 2.8.

Two years into it, I look at my photo library, and the VAST majority of my shots are taken in the 15-40mm range closed down to f/6.3-9.

An indoors shooter might need as much aperture as possible and might be happy with a fixed focal length of 35mm, 50mm, or 85mm.

A football or baseball shooter might need 400mm or even 600mm and doesn't care as much about aperture.

So, yeah, it absolutely depends on what you're shooting.
My trusted duo are my Canon 70-200 f/2.8 and my Canon 17-40 f/4.

Enjoy!

Kozyavka, welcome to the Digital Grin. :clap

Nikon and Canon both make appropriate lenses for many sports situations. The original poster, in this case, is using a Canon camera so a Nikon lens solution is just not going to work for them.
