View Full Version : Can't get RSS feeds to work with Google Profile

I am trying to attach my smugmug recent photos RSS to my google profile
http://www.google.com/profiles/randypollock
When I provide the link it says that it sees the feed, but when you try and view the profile page it says there is an error with the feed.

Anyone using Google have their profile page working with Smug?

A Google profile is simply how you present yourself on Google products to other Google users. It allows you to control how you appear on Google and tell others a bit more about who you are. With a Google profile, you can easily share your web content on one central location. You can include, for example, links to your blog, online photos, and other profiles such as Facebook, LinkedIn, and more. You have control over what others see. Your profile won't display any private information unless you've explicitly added it (http://www.google.com/support/accounts/bin/answer.py?answer=97706).
I use it to let people see all my websites, social networks, pictures (if I can get it to work) and shared google reader articles

Yup. It was a bug on our end, fixed internally and on our dev/test servers but not live. We'll have it live within the next week or so I hope.

Thanks for the update. I have gotten positive feedback from my clients and friends when they can see my signature line in emails now using the google profiles as they see all my contact info, social networks, websites, etc...
Once this error gets fixed I can turn it on as well.

This also works.
The administrator may have enabled RSS syndication, this allows you to view newly created threads in guest viewable forums without visiting the board.
The feeds are currently provided in two formats, RSS and RSS v2. The differences are as follows:
RSS 0.91 - This feed is based on a standard written by netscape and provides a link and the title of the thread.
http://www.dgrin.com/external.php?type=rss
RSS 2.0 - This feed contains title, author, date and the contents of the first post of the thread.
http://www.dgrin.com/external.php?type=rss2To add this to MyYahoo click here (http://e.my.yahoo.com/config/promo_content?.module=ycontent&.url=http://www.dgrin.com/external.php?type=rss2).
The forums to which this applies can also be limited to specific guest viewable forums by adding another paramater to the URL containing the forumids as follows:
http://www.dgrin.com/external.php?type=rss2&forumids=123
If you would like the content to be generated for multiple forums you can seperate the forumids by commas.

I'm somewhat inclined to think Google is expecting something a little funny, but I can't say for sure. After all, Smugmug RSS feeds work perfectly fine in Google Reader, but that same RSS feed gets an error from Google Profile. When you put in the feed URL, it says it found a feed, but when you go to the profile page, in the spot where the pictures should show up, it just says "Photo feed error -- please check your photo source URL.", which isn't very helpful.

Makes you wonder what is different between flickr RSS and SM RSS.

Try removing and re-adding your feeds. I remember having heard that this issue is fixed, but to get Google reader to update, you need to remove and resubscribe to it. But then, it might be a different issue.
If that doesn't help, did you give the Atom feeds a try instead of using RSS?
SebastianI have added/removed/replaced the RSS and Atom feeds in Google to no avail. :dunno
Perhaps merging this thread (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=120510) into this one, too? Same issue...

Hi guys,
I have a Google Profile (http://www.google.com/profiles/glennbatten) and one of the features is a photo feed from either Picasa, Flickr or a custom solution where you insert your rss feed. No matter which feed I insert google will not read the rss feed and comes up with an error.
Does anybody know a solution or workaround?

Looks like they are grabbing the feed server-side as there's no request from the browser to smugmug (monitoring this via Fiddler)
Even so, could Google be looking for a crossdomain.xml or trying to honor some other permission granting policy (robots.txt, etc.) ?

I think they are standing by the line that their RSS is fine and the problem is with Google.
I have gotten lots of comments for people who click on my Google profile (I use it as a sig line in email) and I can say a few of my closest friends have asked why I switched back to flickr from SM.
Then I have to explain I didn't ...

Question for the SmugMug people - what was Google's answer? Maybe they're expecting something special or in a certain format so that pictures show up in the Google Profile.

The Google Profile is just a way to show people all your information (both in a public way and a private way). Having the RSS feed so that your pictures from SM show up is just a nice way of showing people who you are or what kind of pics you take...
I have asked what Google said to the Heroes on SM, but didn't get an answer. I'm not sure SM had actually contacted someone directly with Google to see what the issue is with the RSS syntax.

Yep, same thing here too. Heroes, not sure if this helps or not:
These feeds say "no photos in feed":

Tried adding a smug mug feed today. Same problem still exists. I don't know if the problem is google side or smug mug side, or some combination of the two. But it's obviously a problem none of us end users can fix.

I first reported this issue awhile back when Google Profiles was more of a novel thing with your Google account.
Now Profiles are going to really take off as people start using Google Buzz. Buzz will create your profile (if you don't have one already). So more people are going to start taking interest in their Google Profile.
I'm not sure why someone at SM can't contact Google and figure this issue out, it should be a easy fix as we are just discussing RSS feeds.
I'm having to have my profile point to my Flickr account.
RogersDA
Feb-10-2010, 10:07 AM
One thing I noticed is that a flickr feed shows one photo size for each image in the feed. Smugmug, even when a size is specified in the feed, has links to each image size that the gallery has available.
I'm no feed expert, but I wonder if there is an issue with Google reading that SmugMug feed and parsing it to show the images in the profile.

Doesn't seem likely that this is a big or complex problem: just need to output a feed in the right format.
Maybe it'd be possible to analyse the Flickr feed, then work out what fields are needed and create a Yahoo pipe that can translate the SM feeds into a Google compatible feed?
I'll get round to it eventually if no one else does...

A friend of mine who also uses SM suggested that we say one of the following to get it bumped up the request queue.
1. Ask S. Jobs to request it.
2. Tell them it's really called iprofile.
3. Tell it it looks awesome on the ipad.
I think I'll just request that they look at it again and try to get someone at Google to response to why it doesn't work with an RSS feed that obviously works in other Google products (Google Reader for one).

I will also say that the Create A Feed Wizard does not allow for creating a boxee feed - only RSS, Atom, and Google Maps.
I --should-- be able to change the format=RSS200 to format=boxee, but others may not know to do that.
Also - I really have no idea of the differences between the various feeds. :huh:D

The main points here
1. From the buzz conversation they know of some bugs

4. Google guys will hopefully get back to us next week with a solution

I created a temp gallery to try out the boxee feed in Google Profile.
I used this feed URL:
http://www.greyleafphoto.com/hack/feed.mg?Type=gallery&Data=8696379_4hCtf&format=boxee
It worked as I posted above. Then, I changed the feed URL to another gallery (my flora gallery). This new feed didn't work, perhaps because external links were off. So, I changed it back to the above feed URL. When I did this the above feed URL would be found - but the photos would not display again. Ever.
So I enabled external links for the flora gallery, and then copied it's feed URL to my Google Profile. Wow - it worked.
http://www.greyleafphoto.com/hack/feed.mg?Type=gallery&Data=4413036_8FS3M&format=boxee
So - I tried the original feed URL again. It still does not work (Google finds it - but the photos will not be displayed). I copied the flora feed URL, and now it does not work (Google finds it - but the photos will not be displayed).
I have tried everything - deleting the feeds, deleting the photos (in the Google Profile). Alas, the above two feeds will not work.
It seems that Google is flagging the feeds in some manner to keep them from being reused if you delete them from your profile.

:scratch:dunno:scratch:dunno I wish I'd have read this more thoroughly before I tried adding photos to my Google Profile. I seem to have a similar problem. Currently I can't get any feeds to work. I tried RSS , Atom, Boxee, etc. I don't know what any of these things are, exactly (or I mean, I don't understand the workings of them) but the only one that gave a glimmer of hope was Boxee. I used the link I found for Boxee within my "Share> Get a Link" button. I tried using it within my Portfolio Gallery. First, I had no problem... I copied the Boxee link & it found the feed & displayed the photos. However, it only displayed 15 or so, & I thought there would be some way to get more photos to show. (I don't know how it chose those particular 10 photos from the gallery) So I stupidly deleted the link from my profile. When I tried copying & pasting it again, it appeared to find the feed but now won't display any photos. Now I see that some others of you are unable to get photos to display after deleting a link. Shucks. Any updates here, or anything I can try? ETA: Ahhh, now I see that those photos which WERE displaying earlier were the 20 photos from page one of my gallery, probably because that was the page I was on when I copied the Boxee feed link. Hi. I want to help. In order to do that, I'd really need to see your google profile link. Sorry, Andy-- I thought anyone could just see it if they searched & didn't realize I needed to give a link. But just now when I was trying to even find it myself, I had no idea how to find it. I don't even know how I found it before. At this point, I'm trying to figure out what the point of it is anyway if no one can find it easily?? Anyway, I think this is it: http://www.google.com/profiles/AnnaLisaYoderWinsomeWorks

Works perfectly here http://www.google.com/profiles/awilliamsny Andy, the Boxee feed is still there. I never removed it. I double-checked to be sure it was there. Yes, I can see yours fine. The problem is evidently what someone reported earlier.... that if you remove it and then try to install again, it won't show. Perhaps Google is doing something to block it the second time 'round? If I click on the "edit photos" link, I can see that this is the URL that I have in the URL box: http://www.winsomeworks.com/hack/feed.mg?Type=gallery&Data=6704667_LAjfv&format=boxee

Any ideas? Mine still is not working. I even tried "deleting photos" to see if it would be like starting over, but still nothing. the Boxee feed line is still there, btw. Just to let you know, I did send a complaint message to Google through the Help message box they have. I also put a message on their suggestions-kind-of-forum . If lots of others are having this problem, I hope you'll do the same. But as someone else said, if this is a Google problem & SmugMug has standard feeds, I think it would be much more helpful if someone high up in the Smug heirarchy would be talking to Google about this. It's frustrating that the standard feeds don't work. And even with Boxee (on yours as well, Andy) only images from what I presume is the first page of your gallery seem to show. Shouldn't more be showing? [ETA: ohhh, I see Andy's out for a fun week of shooting! This can wait, obviously! Hope you're having a blast, Andy!]

Suggestions anyone? Is someone with clout communicating with Google about this?

I would still like to have some help for this. If no one has any ideas, I would at least like to know that SmugMug higher-ups are communicating with Google over this. I still have the boxee feed there, and posted my link down below. So it should be working, but it's not. Has anyone else had progress? Andy, I hope you read the post(s) from me & others that mentioned that the issue seems connected to getting rid of & then trying to replace your feed.

I don't know what to say :( It works here http://www.google.com/profiles/awilliamsny and I use the very same Boxee feed as you're trying.

Yeah Andy - but have you ever deleted that boxee feed and replaced with something else, then gone back to the original boxee feed?

We'll keep trying. But Google clearly isn't doing the right thing here. Our feeds just work. Except in google profiles.

I think this is so low on Google's radar that it's not worth it to them to dedicate any resources to it. No matter - I killed my profile. Not worth it.

He's asking if you personally have ever deleted your feed & then tried to have it work again. I think that if someone takes this up with Google, it would be very important for them to have that info... that trying to do it a second time is when it doesn't work (and also that our regular feeds have never worked). It's already been a long time since that Buzz conversation that Havanese reported this way in an earlier post:
".....The main points here
1. From the buzz conversation they know of some bugs
2. Main RSS feeds at SM should work but don't
3. Boxee link feeds sometimes work which isn't the answer we need
4. Google guys will hopefully get back to us next week with a solution...."
And obviously Google did not get back to us "next week" with any solutions.

Hi Anna Lisa - I did that. Go check my profile. It's broken now. We can keep trying at Google but guess what :D YOU should, too! Thanks.

Well, I guess it confirms what we thought. If you see my post #85 here in this thread, you'll see I already did "take it up" with Google, in the only way I saw to do so. I also recommended that others chime in as well. But as I said, it's just a forum, and I don't see any other place to bring it up. I highly doubt one of us paeons is going to get anywhere with them. You guys at the top would have a lot more leverage. I still don't really know who ever sees those profiles anyway. Most people don't even realize they exist. You didn't know how to find mine w/o the link, and I wouldn't have known how to find yours. It's kinda weird. I only did it because someone told me to. :D

Graham Graham, the problem has come in when we already had a feed, then deleted it for any reason. After that, it's been impossible to re-install it. I don't think initial installation was a problem anymore. But trying to re-install it was. I had completely forgotten about it though, and consequently haven't tried for a long long time to re-install it. I still have never really figured out what use there is for Google profiles. I've never actually witnessed anyone else using them for anything, nor do I know how to find someone else's profile or why I'd want to bother.
