My daughter's band was having the final summer concert in the Conejo Creek Park (David, this is next to the Library, on Janss Rd).

Blowing a trumpet into a microphone? Nice way to make an audience's ears bleed! My friend Freddy use to play trumpet on the beach..and you could hear him from a good 2 or 3 blocks away! If he played into a microphone, Gabriel would probably start wondering what happened to HIS horn!

They had 30 or so people in this partucular configuration (about 45-50 total, they are split into four groups - AM Jazz, PM Jazz, Wind Ensemble, Wind Symphony), she had a solo.. Believe you me, you won't hear much without proper sound setting. When it comes to sound performance, it's like with the photography: you can do it with availalble resource (day light / natural acoustics), but the special gear (sound/lighting) makes it SO much better..
