What are you trying to express in this image? Or is it just a tribute to another's work?

I personally don't consider photos of sculptures, paintings, posters or other artwork as valid unless it somehow gives the artwork a deeper meaning, since the photographer is not the original artist.

I think you're both being too hard-nosed about it. Of course he's brought his own insight, and created a particular context in what he's included/excluded in the picture. Whether or not the image works for you is a different matter entirely from whether it contains a work of art by someone else. I find the fact that the image seems to be hiding around the corner interesting. There's something secret here. I'm not in love with the image, but give the guy his due, he's not just making a record of a canvas hanging in a museum, he's sharing something that caught his eye, and is showing you something about what it means to him.

I agree that the angle and crop give the comp a slight amount of added visual appeal, but the artwork overwhelmingly dominates the photo. Rather than take photos of interesting things, I prefer to take photos of things and make them interesting.

Yep, I found it interesting...pretty much a "working girl on her corner" and liked the contrast of colors to the rundown area.

I tend to agree with some of the above posters, sorry. I don't think it's an invalid photo, in fact I think it would be a great exhibition of the artist's work. But that, to me, is what it looks like it should be. Personally I don't think it has enough to stand out from that.

But I won't debate 'what is art'. I like the perspective, it's an interesting shot. I may have waited for something even more engaging. Like say a person walking nearby, or something like that. :thumb

Thanks, heh, I tried that but everyone avoided me when I was taking some shots. I thought about taking it from across the street but didn't bring a long enough lens. I may go back and "stage" something tho...

Thanks for the input all.

I have been similarly hard-nosed when I have seen pictures of art in the LPS or challenges, but I get your point TO...

I think this would be a lot more powerful if you went back and shot this wider, with the girl to the side, and other bums sitting on the curb or some folks walking up the streetside.. If this is on the side of a random warehouse or such, consider bringing along some folks as models and create a scene for us...

Create something that she would interact with if she were real, or something that would just as normally ignore her on that corner..

I want to talk about strategies for street photography and about having people notice you and avoid you. This happens to me all the time. But I don't want to hijack this thread. So, I started a new thread (http://dgrin.com/showthread.php?p=1090058#post1090058) on the technique board. Maybe someone can help us.
