View Full Version : Anti-Spam Comment Filter

I’ve been a Pro user for about 3 months now. My perspective is that of a home user looking to share photos with friends and family.
As a suggestion, comments on pictures that are behind a password shouldn’t require an ‘anti-spam’ test. Its unnecessary and a hassle. Frankly if there is something wrong with the security and a spammer can get in, I hope he does leave a message so I know my security failed. This request might seem trivial, but any web guy will tell you one of those filters will cut down responses people make on your site by 90+%. And it definitely puts friends and families off, as well as the ease of commenting that people are used to in something like Facebook.

Thronsen, you are 100% correct and that does make a ton of sense. I am going to add this to the list for comment revisions... I will try and update this thread when we make the change.
All the best,
Scott.

Whaaaat? 1.5 years (with regular bumps) after my original request, an actual *engineer* is looking at this issue?

Sweet. Please make sure changes apply not only to password-protected galleries, but to sites with site-wide passwords too.
Thanks.

Hi Darryl-
Sorry, I missed when you posted about this last year, didnt mean to reinvent the wheel. I read your link and you are spot on.
I think this is a reasonably big deal especially for those trying to migrate people from places like Facebook. I recently got my wife to switch her albums from Facebook because of their change in TOS, and this is her biggest complaint. Her friends would post all the time on her albums there, but rarely do so here. And that makes her feel the albums she makes are alot less fun.
I chose Smugmug because of its security and privacy. But it would be great to have it as friendly as possible once the initial password check was passed.

Thronson: My post was not at all intended to be a dig at you, but rather at SmugMug.

Scott didn't work here a year and a half ago. For that matter, neither did 2/3 of the sorcery team, myself included. :wink

Hiya Cabbey:
Like I said, I'm not faulting you or Scott. You guys weren't around to see my original feature request or if you were, you weren't SM employees at the time.
I guess the problem is that on the one hand SmugMug is great about replying quickly to request for support, etc., and if it's something that can be fixed immediately, it usually is.
But that creates an expectation that some of these niggling issues that have been around *forever* will get fixed just as quickly, or heck, within a year or three. Things like:
Thumbnail orientation not getting adjusted when changed in Customize Gallery or Bulk customize gallery
A "recent photos" (a la Flickr Photostream) or "recent galleries" widget for the front page that isn't a nasty Javascript hack
Separate pages for Categories/Galleries (again, not using a complicated JS hack)
*Paging* if you have a crazy long page of galleries like http://jt.smugmug.com/,
Setting a Quick Setting as your "default" for all new galleries (hey, even Pros would love this, I bet).
Make the SmugMug logo and the "home" link in the top nav go to the user's home page instead of SmugMug's.
I understand there's a long list of bug fixes and feature requests. I understand that features for Pros (Packages and coupons! Packages and coupons!) seem to come first, because they make you the most money. I understand that SmugMug fixes things methodically and carefully because they have a lot of users. I understand that they don't have a lot of staff.
But it's nonetheless frustrating.

It makes no sense that the comments captcha is required on passworded galleries or site.:D

So there is no way of suppressing it? I have been working on a genealogy project with an uncle of mine, who is in his 80s. Although he has great computer skills, he still gets hung up on the captcha, and has a hard time captioning the photos...
