On my website [www.celestemcwilliams.com], I have the following categories: People, Places, Things, Events, Customer Photos, and Personal Photos. On my homepage, I have them listed by category, since the Customer Photos and Personal Photos categories each have lots of sub-categories, more than I'd prefer to have listed on my homepage.

My issue is that some of my other categories --- Places, for instance --- only have one sub-category. So, in order to see the photos in the sub-category, you'd need to click on Places [category] and then Places [sub-category]. Seems kinda redundant.

Is there a way to list sub-categories on my homepage as well as my Customer Photos and Personal Photos categories at the same time? I don't mind listing sub-categories for the People, Places, Things, and Events, but would prefer the others to be listed by category since they have a long list of sub-categories. (Sorry if I'm confusing everyone.) Any suggestions/ideas?

Also, when viewing my homepage, are there only 2 columns of categories showing, or do wider monitors create more columns? If not, can I make it do this?

Thanks!

You are kind of stuck. You can't have both categories and galleries on the homepage - it's one or the other. I have this same problem for categories that only have one gallery in them.

If you search for "stretchy categories" you can find CSS that will let the categories go to more than 2-across. I don't know why Smugmug hasn't yet offered that as a built in option. With large screens so common now, two categories across does seem a little 90s ish.

For categories with only one subcategory - you might want to consider not using a subcategory at all there. You can always add it in later if you need to categorize the category.

--- Denise I was confused by the words used in the original post, but if you look at the example mentioned, there isn't actually a sub-category. It's just a category with one gallery in it which results in this extra click.

Ah. I guess I was confused too! Thanks for the clarification.

If it were my site, I would probably put that places gallery in a different catgory for now, then use a places category when I added another gallery for that category.

One potential solution: hand code your own subcatagory page with in a gallery.
I list galleries on http://www.zoomdak.com/galleries (http://www.zoomdak.com/galleries)but the water gallery contains a bunch of other galleries - http://www.zoomdak.com/Water/Water-Photos/ (http://www.zoomdak.com/Water/Water-Photos/15240463_QdwV3#855900941_Bnj6q)

Little tricky to do, but here is how I did it:

I think I'm getting the hang of it. Is there a way to password the individual sub-galleries [such as your various water categories, for example]? I'm wanting to have "Customers" as a gallery, and then password the individual customers' sub-galleries.

Thanks so much for your help!

There is no concept of a sub-gallery here.

Categories contain galleries and optionally contain subcategories.
Subcategories contain galleries.
Galleries contain photos.

Passwords are applied at the gallery level, not the category level. You would need to apply a password to each customer's gallery.

If you have a subcategory that contains galleries for a specific customer, assigning the same password to all of the galleries in that subcategory would allow the customer to log in only once.

In the html-only example above - there could be a password at that top gallery level, but if you are pointing to multiple customer's galleries within that I would not recommend using the same password for the html-only gallery and for the galleries it links to (since that would allow a customer to see other customer's galleries). If you are using the html-only gallery for a specific customer, then using the same password for the html-only gallery and for the galleries linked to from that page would make sense. Only you can determine your security needs.

Yeah, I think you should be able to Password them as normal. (Like going into the settings of the Waterfalls gallery and password protecting it).

Addition to this style of category page.

To have photos listed in the gallery category smart gallery them in, and then if you want to hide them:

Add this to your CSS:
.gallery_GALLERY_ID #photos {display: none;}
.gallery_GALLERY_ID #comment {display: none;}
.gallery_GALLERY_ID #albumNav_top {display: none;}
.gallery_GALLERY_ID #albumNav_bottom {display: none;}

Or if you want to see the photos while logged in:
.gallery_GALLERY_ID .notLoggedIn #photos {display: none;}
.gallery_GALLERY_ID .notLoggedIn #comment {display: none;}
.gallery_GALLERY_ID .notLoggedIn #albumNav_top {display: none;}
.gallery_GALLERY_ID .notLoggedIn #albumNav_bottom {display: none;}
