I took about a hundred of this guy preening himself (herself?) on Saturday from my porch using my new monopod for support. Unfortunately, I forgot to overexpose for the backlight, so all the shots were underexposed on the bird. The softness is due to all the PP I had to do to try and boost the colors.

I like the look of this shot. It feels like you are really there the way it`s lit. Interesting bird to. i`ve never seen one. Are they common?

Interesting capture. When I shoot wildlife I shoot in aperture priority and then make EV adjustments based on my subject. You might want to give that a try.

I like the look of this shot. It feels like you are really there the way it`s lit. Interesting bird to. i`ve never seen one. Are they common? Jerry, these are very common in gardens in the north and eastern parts of South Africa. In the wild they occur in what is known as the bushveld of Africa.

If you need more info let me know. Thanks Harry. When I was shooting film, I also used to shoot in aperture priority and make the necessary exposure adjustments. At the moment, I'm being lazy trying to get the feel of the camera, so using P-mode.
