Can you tell me in layman terms, why smugmug can not allow a site map to be created? Why can't we create a site map of our own pages or are we only talking about not being able to do a site map automatically / with a software program?

Thanks Andy, I was going into the Google Webmaster Tools and that was one of the first things that popped up; then I found the thread you referenced above. Will have to get through that good tutorial you have there when I get a chance next week!

You can't do it automatically.
You can do it manually, by putting the html in the "Description" field of a empty gallery, then using the "html gallery" technique to hide to the gallery-is-empty message.

A "site map" like what you're describing is totally different than a sitemap that Google is talking about. Google is looking for an XML file that identifies all pages/content on the site. Unfortunately, you need to put that XML file at the root of your website. SmugMug can't handle that.

I found this one out the hard way... from experience.
Tried to pop it into an HTML only gallery and thought that would the trick.... not. If you don't have access to the root (which we SM members don't) you can not place the xml file where Google is looking for it.
This is I guess by virtue of the fact that Smugmug IS the root and we are not smugmug :-) but only sub domains of smugmug?
