View Full Version : Picture of your local firetruck request...
My 4-year-old grandson, CJ is very interested in fire trucks. He and his mom visit all the local fire stations in Silicon Valley. His favorite trucks are the yellow ones! But any fire truck, white, red, or whatever is perfectly fine too! He has several helmets, including a haz mat silver helmet. (see photo).
If you could either post them here, or send them direct to his e-mail account I'd really appreciate it, and he would be thrilled.
cjfiretruck@yahoo.com
He saw Gus's E-4 San Francisco truck and was very excited because he lives near a fire station that has its own E-4 in it. So I thought it would be really neat if he could see fire trucks from around the country, or maybe, even from around the world!

Thanks Gary, that antique engine is really neat! There's an old one that is open on top and this couple is using it to tour San Francisco. Saw it on Bay Area Backroads, but don't know if they are still running the tours. It looked like a great way to go across the Golden Gate Bridge.

CJ watches fire truck tapes that were made in the L.A. area. He learned what all the dials, ladders, hoses, etc. are for. That's why they enjoy him at the fire stations because he can point to things on the trucks and tell the fireman what they are!
He has model and toy fire trucks and tells me what they are! He's really into fire trucks in a big way.

I never knew there were so many different kinds of fire trucks until CJ got interested in them. His parents have helped by buying him videos, borrowing books from the library and taking him to visit fire stations. The firemen love the visits and have special stickers for visiting children, schools, pre-schools, etc.

For sale, huh?
When I worked in Fremont we'd see a fire truck almost every day. Turned out they liked to eat at the same deli we did. Then when we went to another shopping center my daughter would discover a couple of engines, complete with firemen in the back of the center, seems it was a local meeting place for the firemen. There weren't too many places in the area for them to meet. There was one firehouse on the street bordering the shopping center. Then, there's another shopping center where they'd spot some trucks and firemen. If you keep an eye out, suddenly you can see them all over the place :):
While waiting for a light to change in San Francisco, I was able to shoot a fire truck thru my windshield. It was one where there's a fireman in the back of the truck to control the ladder. I'm not to clear on all this :):
Thank you Angelo, I'll make sure my daughter shows the new trucks to CJ.
That one with the ladder? CJ informed me it's a tiller truck! He's all excited seeing the different fire trucks. So far his favorite is the one that floated! That one impressed me also!

You even got a person driving the fire truck! He'll be thrilled when he sees them. Thank you for posting.

That is so sad, seeing the fire truck like that. It is good to know there are exhibits throughout the state, I'm sure it would be difficult to forget for anyone who lived through the experience.

CJ was visiting Friday and I showed him "his" firetruck thread and he was so excited he kept telling me what kind of truck each one was, and he wanted to know why the firetruck "floated" (The cardboard one) and when he came to your yellow one he was almost jumping up and down he was so happy to see a yellow one. When it came to the gauges my daughter started explaining about where the hoses get attached. Some are color coded, others use a numbering system. I learned more than I wanted to know. Thank you for posting!

for where to connect the hoses. It's amazing CJ can just briefly glance and he knows if it's a pumper truck or a ladder truck. He really "is" enthusiastic about firetrucks! Thank you for including this one in the thread.

the gauge tells you what the water pressure is
the knobs are to turn the water on
the bottom middle partially cut off thing is where you attach the hose

Oh Spiderman was a big hit too! CJ's at that "question asking" stage, asking me questions I can't answer -- why was there a parade? what's a parade? why do people go to a parade?
But he knew spiderman!
It's really amazing to see fire trucks from all over -- and fire copters too! You've all been very generous in posting fire trucks and firefighting related images. CJ is always very excited to see "his" thread and tell me in detail about the trucks and copters... and then ask me a zillion questions!
I've just learned Chapel Hill, NC has a special BLUE fire truck, and I've seen pictures of green fire trucks, visited a site that is sort of a fire truck graveyard (like the retired ships on the Hudson River in NY and in the Delta here in the San Francisco bay area).
So keep the photos coming! I spotted a battalion car parked behind our local fire house which I discovered going to a house that was advertising free stuff on craigslist.com. I got two bags of books, most all of them for CJ and a good wok for us, and coming back I noticed the car and didn't even notice that we had driven past a fire house!

My daughter takes my grandson to "practice" burns whenever she can so he can watch the firemen in action. I know he started off liking the bright red loud noisy trucks, then from there to admiring the firemen. I'm not sure at this point he realizes the implication of fire and how dangerous it is. I'm sure when he visits the fire stations he's told not to play with fire, etc.
I have to admire you volunteering to be a fire fighter, it can be a really dangerous activity. It must be rewarding though when the fire is put out and all is safe again.

James.
I stumbled on a fire truck "graveyard" on the web. It's difficult for me to realize fire trucks don't last forever.
Then you wonder, who buys an old fire truck and what do they do with them?
We have a really old one in San Francisco that they turned into a tour bus. It's open at the top, so the big treat is going across the Golden Gate Bridge so you can look up to the towers.
Thank you for posting!

I clicked your town to see what part of California you're in. Years ago the graphic design studio I worked for did some work for a medical device company and on a trip to "so cal" we went to Temecula. It's pretty in that area. It's probably built up a lot more since then.
Thank you for adding your fire truck. CJ (my grandson) gets so excited when he sees all the fire trucks! They live near Moffett Field and visited the fire station there. He got to ride in the airport fire truck and now he's telling me all about the "foam" and the special fire truck for airplanes!
My daughter's learning more about fire trucks herself, after getting tapes and books on fire trucks, etc., as well as visiting the fire stations and talking with the fire fighters. They've started making cookies to bring with them for the fire fighters.
There was a 4th of July parade in a nearby town and they had a special section for the kids to hold the fire hose, see the trucks, etc.

Temecula is up over 90,000 and Murrieta is 85,802 (today). I hope there are enough fire trucks to keep us all safe, should be lots of new trucks to see. Generally, I don't go out of my way to take photos of fire trucks, but for my nephew... of course, I will snap a picture when I have the opportunity. :):

Shot indoors in a hurry with a little Pentax (their new waterproof model). Most of the others I took have flash glare in them (reflected off that shiny finish) and no tripod or monopod to let me shot sans flash. So, this is the best I could get.
Saw this one in an antique mall in Nappanee, Indiana while on a family vacation.

Here is a firetruck from a bygone era. This was shot at the Reno Rodeo Parade in June 2005. Not a modern pumper, but it did the job in its day.
Hope you enjoy,

I actually saw a converted fire truck, an old one, that is now a BBQ truck with Oregon plates. I spotted it on my way to Frys in Palo Alto. Haven't offloaded yet... I now have an additional hard drive (internal) and we are now (both Ed and I) on the internet, with printer access, the works... finally joined the modern age. Long story, but I got a CPU from where I used to work in exchange for $$. It's working out well now that Ed has his own computer and is off mine :):
CJ and Dara are hoping to get a visit to the San Jose airport fire trucks.
Hi,
I was trying to catch a bus this morning when i saw these old firetrucks. I had about one minute until my bus went, but i managed to take these since i remembered this topic.

That first one is quite unique! Now of course CJ is going to ask me a million questions! :):
This is a first post as I have just found the forum. I wasn't going to post just yet but thought that this truck might be different from the others.

Wow, is CJ going to be surprised at all the new additions to this thread. I'm so glad you remembered and took the time to take and post the photos!
CJ was in England last year and they visited fire departments in London and in Sweden. He never has enough fire trucks to look at, but makes me search for more when he comes to visit!
Again, thanks so much, and a huge welcome to dgrin!
I posted 3 old firetrucks in post #60. Here are 4 more :)

The old fire trucks are so interesting! I have to offload and post one I found today which was converted to a BBQ truck! A movable feast...
Besides seeing the fire trucks, CJ is learning about history, which is such a great thing. Although he's only 4 1/2 he's reading and I'm going to let him read the threads when he visits next.
My secret project is to teach him to type real soon so he can learn spelling, but he's having trouble reaching the keys. I have to see if they have any keyboards for children.
I know, I'm pushing things! I taught my oldest daughter to read by showing her how to type on an old manual typewriter, she was just barely over 3. So she thinks nothing of CJ being able to read, because she could.
CJ is learning a lot more than just seeing fire trucks, he is seeing the kindness of people all over the world, and that's so important too!

the old trucks! I love the bells on them! CJ and I saw some on the internet last week and I was explaining that the old trucks didn't have horns and that someone had to ring the bell by hand.

Hi Dee and CJ,
I took this shot tonight. They were responding to a call and stopped right in front of me so I took a few shots. This was the best one that showed the truck. It looks brand new and it's Reno #1.
Hope you like it and can figure out what kind it is,

It's a pumper truck! He had a thrill today, he and his parents were shown the big San Jose Airport trucks and he got to ride in them, see the big airplanes take off, and see some of the smaller planes. The lady in the control tower waved to him too!
I like the Reno lights over the fire truck!

Fall River Mills is on Hwy 299 up near the Shasta/Mt. Lassen area (north/northeastern portion of the state). From San Jose, it's about a 330 mile drive...if traffic cooperates, it takes about 6 hours (including bathroom breaks). Vacaville traffic on Hwy 80 can be a real pain but once you're past there, it's not bad.
I take 680 all the way until it splits for Napa and Vacaville. I take the Interstate 80 side of the split until 505, then take 505 to I-5.
The second exit or so in Redding is Hwy 299 (towards Burney). Another 80-ish miles from Redding gets you to the tiny town of Fall River Mills (it's about 17 miles past Burney).
If you head up that way, try to catch the puppy rock (a rock outcropping along Hwy 299 that's painted to look like a puppy's head). It's somewhere around Ingot which has some cool looking ruins on the hillside across a creek from the road but there doesn't appear to be any place to stop and get pictures of those ruins (I'm guessing left-overs from the Gold Rush given the town's name and the proximity of the ruins to a creek).

Thanks Ian... CJ knows that these old fire trucks were pulled by people, or horses and he loves the old bells.
I have to find a time when Bodie is not too hot -- but before the snow flies. Anyone know what time that would be, October?
Now CJ is going to see the tank, and the hose, so this is a pumper truck, but how did they pump the water out?
He's only 4 1/2 but I told him how to spell fire truck and he did his own web search. We watch him carefully, but he knows his way around Safari! When he was younger he'd play movies in iMovie, particularly the one of the changing of the guards in London.
I want to teach him how to type, but he doesn't really spell yet, although what he can read is amazing at his age. He can't quite reach the keys yet, but he can hunt and peck already!
Surfin' the 'net with his grandma is his special treat. He's not allowed on the computers at home because they want to supervise him... naturally.

We don't get up that way that often, and that's a long drive. Is Burney where that great waterfall over lava is? I had this California Parks tape from the library, and if that's the same place, it's spectacular.
The puppy head rock sounds like a photo opp too!
I'd be coming from just below San Francisco, so I could shave 45 minutes off the time, LOL.
Ah Vacaville -- home of the outlet malls??? Hard to get past them, LOL

Dee,
September or October is a great time time to go. However, after about the
15th of September traditional "tourist" services start to fall off. Things like
camp grounds, ranger presence (they're still there to collect your money),
etc. If you do get over to Bodie, think about driving down to Mammoth Lake
and hitting Devil's Postpile.
Burney Falls is the place with the "weeping" wall.

Altitude and sun can make it uncomfortable. Even though tourist season

Yeah, there's a big lake/park called Burney Falls (I think that's the name) maybe a dozen miles past the town of Burney. The town uses a picture of the falls in their "Welcome to Burney" signs along Hwy 299. I haven't seen the falls in person but have seen pictures...I gotta remember to take my own pics some day.
Getting a pic of the puppy rock requires hiking back along a narrow high-speed road or having one of those machine-gun cameras going as you drive past it. :)

Not a great pic but a pretty cool fire truck. Spotted it today partially outside the fire station when we stopped in San Juan Bautista for lunch on the way back from a camping trip with my son's scout troop.
While staring at the picture of another (smaller) truck outside the same station, I noticed a URL for the fire station. I was hoping they had some cool pictures of the truck to make up for this one but I couldn't find anything...though I did find a cool description of this fire truck.
So I'm posting the picture along with a URL to their web page that has the description of this truck. Remote control on the deck nozzle!
Here's the picture:
http://thwack.smugmug.com/photos/33912209-M.jpg
And here's the link to a detailed description of what's on this truck (be sure to catch the blurb about about the siren on the front bumper):
http://sjbfd.org/news.htm
That is so cool! CJ was surfin' the 'net with our supervision and came on a site that listed a lot of different apparatus and he was in 7th heaven!
But this is so neat the kept the old siren!
Thank you for the photo, and for the URL too! What a neat story.
Well it took me long enough 'eh Dee ? But here it is.

I haven't seen one like this yet in all my sitting next to CJ while he searches for fire truck pictures!
The lettering system is different too! We have T for Tillers, so T-1, T-2, etc., P for Pumper E for engine, etc.
Thank you Gus! Keep looking, I'm still hoping to see some fire trucks from Spain, Italy, France, Germany, Portugal, Monaco, etc., South America, New Zealand, etc.

Those are some interesting graphics on the side of the fire truck! (the curvy thick white stripe) Great photo too. I've been meaning to get to Alviso, been several years since I've been down there.
Occasionally at Half Moon Bay's Strawflower Village shopping center we see a Half Moon Bay and a Point Montara fire truck! I had to do a web search but Montara contracts out to Half Moon Bay for their fire services.

I've been reading, seeing the news, and of course forum member's photos of the fire, but I've been so concerned about the fires, I lost sight of the trucks! :D
We were here (in California) during the Oakland Hills fires and I remember seeing charred pieces of books in our front yard and ashes all over even though we are quite a distance away. It's pretty amazing how far the ash can travel. On the news they had a satellite image showing the smoke blowing from the land and over the ocean. So seeing that, I realized we weren't that far away after all.
Thanks for the photos. I'll let my daughter know there are some new ones for CJ.

Boy, that is one frightening image. You look so close to the fire.
I hate the heat, so I'd never make a fire fighter, would I?
CJ will be happy to see some "yellow" fire trucks! It's a good thing my daughter takes CJ to the "practice burns" so he can see the fire fighters training against flames. I think a lot of times the children are attracted to the bright colors, big truck and the noise and don't realize that these men and women put out fires. That one in your photo looks hopeless to me. I'm glad to hear (over the news last night) that at least one is partially contained.
With all the rain the southern part of California had this year I can imagine the job is made much more difficult with the undergrowth.

on my way home. Wondered about it, then realized they were probably heading back from the southern fires... Unfortunately I couldn't get shots of any of them -- windows dirty, light too dim...
I'm starting to get familiar with the different fire truck manufacturers... American La France has a nice rounded front...
There's one site CJ likes to go to where it's the manufacturer's website and they post images of the trucks... it's a gold mine to him!

CJ just went to a "pancake breakfast" at his local fire house and this month is Fire Safety Awareness Month (or something like that). A lot of the fire houses are having open houses and pancake breakfasts to raise money. They have special displays for the children who visit, trucks to climb in, big concrete pipes for them to crawl through, etc.
He'll enjoy this photo when he gets to see it... Thanks for posting!

Now I'm going to get a million questions! Especially about this one. Why is the man riding that little car? Is this a real fire truck? Who made this fire truck? How does it run, is there an engine?
Thank you for posting these!
Yes it had an engine in it but obviously not too big a one!!:D This was listed as being owned by the local firefighters union.

At least I can tell my grandson it has an engine in it, and the man isn't pedaling the little fire truck :):

You got a nice clear shot of the truck. Not always an easy thing to do in a parade.
Our town doesn't have a parade like this! We have a Fog Fest to celebrate the disappearance of the summer fog (supposedly) but no Santa parade.
CJ has seen quite a few parades with fire trucks in them. They have one every year called the "burn relay."
<<Annual Burn Relay. Each year, the Burn Relay starts in San Jose and ends in San Francisco. It stops in each community along the way to receive contributions from the firefighter associations whose donations go toward supporting the Alisa Ann Ruch Burn Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to burn prevention, education and assistance to burn survivors. The primary benefactor is the “Champ Camp” which is a summer camp for burn survivors. Some of our own Palo Alto Firefighters have served as volunteer counselors at the “Champ Camp.”>>

Firemen at work and in action, that can be difficult to catch. I just watched Backdraft the other night -- I sure hope that's over dramatized!
My daughter and husband were caught in the same traffic jam heading south on IS 280. A car flipped over and caught on fire. Rayna wished she had had her camera with her so she could have gotten pictures of the fire trucks! I don't know why she didn't take a few with her cell phone :):
Every time we tell CJ we see a fire truck on the road he expects us to take a picture of it, and sometimes I have to tell him the fire truck was going too fast for us to catch up with it...

Of course I don't know where my socks are either... but that didn't stop me last time. How neat it was to drive on clear roads, stop at the local parks along Skyline Drive and hop out in light snow, take some neat photos, and get back in the warm car again. No shoveling snow when I get home... what a life. Except, it's just too cold... I've lost my back east edge when it comes to weather and am now a certified California weather wimp!:):

Too bad I haven't had the time for a close look, but I wondered about those wheels too. Looking at the original now I think you can detach them making them into two little carts. The right holds a hose which you can probably directly unroll to the point of interest and fire away the water. The left cart holding a metal box seems to somehow be connected to a hose too, but I don't know what's in it.
For sure they really are very modern. I guess that's also why they aren't really red anymore, but having more of a neon organge color.

I had just passed the station last night - and every time I do I think of this thread - as a truck was pulling out. No lights, no siren. The traffic light ahead of me turned red and I started pulling the 10D out of the bag, hoping he'd get stopped behind me before it turned green again. Hi all, if I am reviving a dead thread I apologize. This is my first post on here as I just stumbled across this site while "googling" for fire truck grave yards.
I am a firefighter here in Indianapolis, and I know of a few other sites where guys would liek to see the pictures in this thread. I love reading the thoughts from "civilians" about the rigs we ride on. What seems so simple and ordinary to us is complicated and breathtaking for outsiders to our profession. If anybody has any questions at all about the trucks in this thread (at least the ones from America anyway) please feel free to drop me an email and I will try my best to help out. I just got home from the Fire Department Instructors Conference and trade show last week and got my pictures loaded onto my computer. All of the major manufacturers were in town with the rigs they have just completed. Some neat stuff this year. When I find time I will try and post some of them! Until then enjoy!

They get all of the best pictures that we can't get while we are working. Thanks again and I look forward to hanging out and maybe learning a few things along the way. :wink

I hadn't quite made it to the end of the thread yet when I signed up. I just saw a 2005 date on one of the posts on the page I was on so I wasn't sure if I was reviving something that was still alive. Glad to hear it is still alive and kicking. I bought a Canon 20D back in November of last year after our son was born. It has been fun learning to use it. I have no actual "training" in photography though. I just luck into good pictures a lot of the time. Some people apparently think I have what they call "talent" :huh So my wife and I have been cruising through the board looking at pictures for the last hour or so. Lots of neat stuff on here!

You're most welcome. I hope to work with a retired Carmel firefighter to shoot
a few of their restored 1920's era engine. Not too sure when but soon I hope.
Wheel chocks are used to prevent the truck from rolling off. Bad form if you
forget and the thing rolls off someplace--which actually happened to a friend
of mine's patrol car in Pacifica--he was going to his first code call and forgot
to put the car in park before he jumped out :rofl :rofl :rofl It rolled into a
parked car.
docwalker
May-22-2006, 05:57 AM
Dee,
The wheel chock use is more complicated than just forgetting to put it in park. The weight of the truck is a major factor. Disk and drum brakes alone can have a hard time holding back 40,000 lbs or more.
Most people do not realize how complicated a fire engines pump really is. The pump actually uses the trucks engine to pump water. To do this, there is a special transfer case that takes the power of the engine and applies it to the pump to make it spin. When you do this, there is a special series of steps that must be done.
When you transfer the power, the drive train including the wheels are placed in neutral. Neutral will allow the truck to roll if the brakes are not set. Most fire engines use air brakes. Air brakes are notorius for having problems. Air leaks, cold or hot temperatures, or someone bumping the air valve can release the brakes and allow the truck to roll.
The chocks are used as a safety measure in case the air brakes quit working.
Smaller trucks do not use the transfer case system. Their pumps are driven by seperate gas/deisel engines. These trucks are very often overloaded with equipment and water that stock brake systems barely handle the weight. So as a safety percaution we use the chocks as a backup.
I have some new photos of fire trucks that will be loaded soon. I will let you know so that you can show them to your son.
Doc
fire1035
May-22-2006, 07:51 AM
Doc left out the next step. Once the transfer is switched from "road" to "pump" gear the truck is then put back into drive to run the pump. If you forget to set the parking break and then increase the throttle (how you control the pressure at which the pump runs) the truck has a tendancy to drive away fromt he operator. The throttle control knob is the same as pushing your foot down on the gas pedal.
Like Doc said though fire trucks are more complicated than most people think. Then again though they don't even use keys to start so they shouldn't be that complicated should they? :huh
docwalker
May-22-2006, 08:09 AM
I left that part out as I figured most people would not care. You are correct on the driving away part. Luckily our trucks have an interlock that will not allow the throttle to operate unless the PTO is fully engaged. That said, I have heard of that failing as well.

I've only done it once:D I've also only tried to shift it from pump to road without moving it to neutral first once as well! This is pretty much the look our training chief gave me when he heard those gears grind. :huh :wxwax But I learned form it and have not done either ever since.

May-23-2006, 04:23 AM
Dee, Most larger firetrucks are deisel and built around designs from way back. You have a battery switch to connect the battery. You have an ignition that turns the power on to the main components. You then often have 2 buttons that you push simultaniously to start the motor. Often, there is no key involved.

When I first got my Sony F828 I thought it was so fast. Now that I've used it for almost 3 years I've run into situations where I'm waiting for the darn image to download already so I can shoot again! I'm hoping I can make some extra money to get the new Sony Alpha. I have Minolta glass!
So I know what you're talking about. Especially not enough zoom. It's my mantra. Not enough zoom, I need a 600 mm lens, not enough zoom...:D

I thought that in an air system, the brakes are only released when pressure is
added. Meaning in a situation where the air supply leaked down, the brakes
would either remain set or come on as the supply leaked down?
docwalker
May-26-2006, 09:59 AM
Ian408,
Correct. I did not mean that the air leak would cause a truck to roll. Only that they are notorious for having problems. It is a good system but prone to problems if not properly maintained.
I have had a helmet (not being worn) pop the air brake control before.

With the advent of electronic (as in servo assisted) brakes, I am surprised
that air continues to be the mechanism of choice for large vehicles.
Anyhow, let's add another piccie...
Not a firetruck but it was FD related...I had the opportunity to play in a

Unfortunately it's not everyday you find them. I collect the manufacturer nameplates off of old engines. I had to drive all the way to Terre Haute form Indianapolis to find the only junk yard within a hundred miles that had ANY fire trucks in their yard. If anybody sees old rigs like that and the nameplates are available for a decent price (or other bits and pieces form the trucks, nozzles etc.) please let me know and I will gladly send money to buy them.
Now on to a photo. This is one I took yesterday while we were waiting to watch a parade that another one of our engines was participating in. Unfortunately we caught a run right before the parade was supposed to start so we didn't get to watch. The engine is my engine (54) the medic truck next to it is out of my house, and the one next to it is from station 51. The guys standing in front of the truck are Bryan, my jump seater on the engine, and Rick my paramedic from the medic truck.
Enjoy!

That's quite a collection of old fire truck photos too that you have!
CJ's going to love looking at these --- thank you so much for posting!
Cupertino, CA has white fire trucks... but mostly the trucks around us are red except for the ones at the airports which are yellow.
Thanks for posting these, it looks like it was a fun parade! And the children look like they are enjoying their rides on the fire trucks!
Do you know if it's an older fire truck or a new one?
It's interesting to see the different colors fire trucks are. Red, white, yellow -- and one of the Carolinas has some blue trucks!
The soft plush fire truck is really neat too!

Hey Dee,
The gold one is an older American LaFrance engine. Probably of the late 60s to early 70s vintage. Sorry I can't give you the exact model. I know a few people who could, and if they had the serial number they could probably tell you every department it has ever served with!

It's amazing to me how many different truck manufacturers make fire trucks!
However, I had no idea they were tracked during their lifetime. What stories some of these trucks could tell!

Dee,
The hoses on the rack span a long time starting on the bottom row the are from around 1930’s they weren’t quite sure what the actual date on them are clear up to brand new ones on the top row and on the floor. I have more trucks somewhere I just need to locate them when I do ill get them up.

I came across this ite by accident as well and I will post some of my photos from the nation's Capitol here for you. We live in the North West part of Dc in sight and hearing of DCFD Station 31. You can see them going out in the winter (No leaves on the trees) and hear them all day and night long, in fact we have trouble sleeping some times when they have a quiet night as we are used to hearing them go out.
This photo is from last December right across the street where we live, DCFD Engine 28-Cleveland Park- taking the hose up after a false alarm. Almost all of the DCFD units have the name of it's area painted on the front, so you can always tell how far away from home it is. Cleveland park is only about two miles down the road and the next closest station.
I will have some more, I hope you enjoy!

I love those old trucks. Wolfies' and Cota's shots of the old ones look great. There's something about their round body work and agressive grills and wheels that's strong stuff.

Heh. I know how tight fits go. I am currently running as the battalion chief while our BC is out of town. I will try and remember to take my camera with me on Monday, since I can go anywhere in the district I want, and take some pictures of our oldest firehouse. The engine barely fits through the doors.

Here's a not too good photo (In fact the first firetruck photo I took the day after I moved in, we live in the big building in the background)
This is DCFD Station 31. Right now due to a remodle project that's 3 years and 7 MILLION dollars over budget and time, Engine 20 and Truck 12 are still sharing Station 31.
Truck 12 takes up the bay to the right while Engines 20 and 31 share the left bay. When everthe rear engine gets a call the first engine pulls out and stops traffic and then backs up and becomes the rear engine in the bay. It makes for lots of horns and sirens, but I am not complaining. In fact if the other station ever gets finished, it might get kind of quiet around here...

Also I have been told that whenever you see Roto-Rays, the spinning lights on the grill on DCFD equipment, those have been put there by thier own crews with thier own money, which is why you see diffrent color combos, they look great at night and it's my goal to get some good night shots one of these days of them spinning.

I like the "artsy" shot!
I once sat (well, three times, to be honest) in my car in front of a fire hydrant in the middle of the day trying to get the correct exposure to blur the traffic rushing down the road.
Wouldn't it be cool if you had a fire hydrant nearby and got a speeding fire truck in front of it???
I'm glad you aren't bothered by all the noise of a fire house across the street :):
