Although "Geography" is checked "yes" in my password protected galleries and geography coords are set for some photos, the Map This button isn't visible? Is this because the galleries are protected?

I think I read that's a restriction by Google not working on protected galleries.

Al, it's not a problem it's by design, and by Google's restriction.

Hey guys --

Are you referring to this section of Google Map's TOS (http://code.google.com/apis/maps/faq.html#tos_commercial):

As long as your site is generally accessible to consumers without charge, you may use the Google Maps API. For example, if your website is supported by advertising, it likely falls within the Google Maps API Terms of Service. If you charge people to place information on your map (e.g. to list their homes for sale), but you display this information using the Google Maps API on a free part of your site, you'll also meet the Google Maps API Terms of Service.

However, not all commercial uses are allowed. If your site meets any of the following criteria you must use Google Maps API Premier:

* Your site is only available to paying customers
* Your site is only accessible within your company or on your intranet

Remember, Google reserves the right to suspend or terminate your use of the Google Maps API at any time, so please ensure that you read the Terms of Service carefully.

Have you ever asked them whether enabling Maps for "protected galleries" realle falls under this category? I mean, protected gallery doesn't necessarily mean that only I can see it. I'll bet plenty of users send out the URLs of those galleries to friends/families/clients, etc., and those folks aren't paying customers, unless they're considered extensions of me.

I'm wondering because both Phanfare (which by default restricts viewing of galleries and maps to friends/family) as well as Eye-Fi (which in their Manager app restricts viewing of photos and maps to the paying customer) appear to be using the regular (not Premier) Google Maps API.

I don't mean to rat those guys out. I just want to have the same functionality on SmugMug! (And hrm, now that there is a Premier option available, I wonder how much it would cost SmugMug if Google policy really is interpreted this strictly and SmugMug decided there was sufficient demand to offer mapping for protected galleries.)

[I imagine that Google doesn't go after companies that are violating their TOS re: commercial use until the traffic hits a certain level where the a big red light goes off and a bunch of sales people start calling and threatening to cut off API access until they upgrade to Premier.]

Have you ever asked them

Darryl, it's something under discussion and has been.
