View Full Version : Shorebirds, including some bifs :-)

Hi everyone. I visited Kamah, Texas last February and just got the chance to process the pix. Kemah is a shrimping village on the Texas coast about 45 minutes southwest of Houston. I went down for the sunset and found total overcast and some cool residents.

Critique appreciated if you have the time.

the first bif, a brown pelican I believe, altho' with the low light 'twas difficult to avoid motion blur

really soft, but kind of pretty, this is the first time I've noticed the brown flight and tail feathers on this otherwise white feathered bird. Does anyone know if this is common?

I had the worst time trying to resolve the glare in the sky behind this guy, as the sun was setting just behind him in the overcast but, the scene is funny as these guys stop at nothing for a meal.

Like the comp in the 1st :thumb
Like the way the pelican looks in 5th shot
The single pelican BIF is good to bad about the wires and buildings in background, got plenty myself :wxwax

Don't think I care much for the white borders on the images, but ya know JMO

Thanks Ben, I appreciate your input. :D

The first is my fav. Glad you get a kick out of #5 :): I left the wires, etc. in to show the neighborhood a bit, maybe it didn't quite do the trick :uhoh I decided to do something different so I added the white borders, inspired in part by the marine theme of blue an white. :dunno

Hi Susan,

Very nice series of shots. You did pretty good here considering that you didn't have too much light to work with. Some of the shots seem a tad underexposed especially the first pelican flight shot. I would have done a bit more EV adjustment on the positive side. Excellent captures. :thumb

I live near San Francisco, CA and only rarely see the white pelicans, so this is really a treat. I loved the ones of the gull and pelican mimicking each other!

The limited light, aside from my not too fast reacations when I realized I had a shot:huh was the biggest factor. I see what you mean re the exposure, looks like I should have checked the histogram:rolleyes and increased the EV. I need to think about that the next time.:rolleyes

I have a difficult time catching decent BIF shots in full daylight. Here you are doing it at twilight! Nice series!:thumb

I appreciate your encouraging words. I'm learning, as it was, I still ran the pix through Neat Image, and they probably would have been better if I used greater than 800 iso and increased the EV, even tho' I adjusted the raw images here. Then I could have gotten a faster shutter speed and better exposure. Now I know:rolleyes
