View Full Version : Going Public

Yesterday afternoon there were huge public rallies held in Sacramento and Los Angeles to protest against actions by our hotly contested Governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger. I decided to attend the rally in downtown LA, which topped 15,000 people, to stretch my photojournal muscles. I have more than 100 pictures that I'm processing but here are just a few. I hope to hear your comments and critiques. Thanks.

Hi Angelo!
Shooting at a rally is a great experience!
My general comment is that you want to look at a news photo and given the
caption, say "oh, I get it". 1, 3, 5 and 7 do that for me while 2, 4 and 6 are
so-so. By that, I mean I see the crowd but not in the proper context.
Thanks for sharing these!

Angelo, a great set. I definatelyy got the sense of what it was all about from most of them. I like the nurses are the real action heroes the best.

Really good stuff, Angelo!
Did you dress funky, too?
I wish I had been there, heck no rallies here. One would think that the south would be a hot bed of controversy. Even our flag controversy had very few photo ops. Kind of like 12 people, including our mayor, walking to the middle of the state on a highway, in regular clothes.
like 12 people? And our state was being boycotted.. Oh, the mayor was in favor of taking the flag down.
And "no", that is not why there were so few people. Apathy, and it was a long boring walk.................can't get us goin' They do a good party here, though. I will party, love to, for a time, but I don't drink. My husband will drink, a bit, but he doesn't like parties.
I am missing one right now.

Ian - thanks for your comment. Yes I agree about context. I had intended these only as samples of a greater set to be viewed as a portfolio to be viewed collectively. It seems I may not get to a point of finishing all of the shots but I have added a couple more at the end of this post. Thank you.

No, but I have to admit I thought twice about approaching those bruisers. Turns out they were nice as could be. :):

This was a great excersize. And the series has some really good shots, but the Iron Workers standout for me.

Angelo,
The shots you added to the thread are great! I love the various buttons. The
way you shot Sparky and Steely are pretty cool.
I agree with your comment that as a larger part of a portfolio, shots help
define the event.

I aplogize upfront to US guys that may be somewhat unhappy with such post but cannot resist, the story is really funny :)
Recently Mr. Bush was visiting our country, Latvia. He was met here with a number of posters saynig: "Welcome PEASE DUKE", and next day I've noticed an article on BBC News website featuring photo below captioned like "Latvians consider Soviet Union an agressor".
http://www.lowculture.com/archives/images/bush_latvia_peaceduke2.jpg
Well, I have dropped them a note saying:
Gentlemen, I strongly advise that you replace a picture in the article or at least change its caption; you make all the Russian speaking world laughing. Although the poster is invented by Latvian-speakers, this is a pun using the fact that the words "peace duke" are pronounced exactly like extremely rude Russian oath that may be translated like "vagina guy" or something close. It is currently used in Latvia by people protesting against US policy and by no means can be interpreted as targeted against Soviet aggression.
The photo was replaced pretty soon. :rofl

.As a rule it is better not to photograph peoples backs, since backs are not that interesting, but their front.
This picture of course is an exception to that rule .:clap Great pic !!!
