Customizing Wordpress

There is a wealth of information on here about Blogger, of which I used a great deal of to customize my blogger account to match my SmugMug account with great success. However, now I wish to do the same with a Wordpress account. I am somewhat lost on how to do it (primarily replace the banner, etc). Anyone who has done this or could lend a hand, it would be appreciated.
