I'm having some trouble getting all my galleries to look the way I want them to. For whatever reason only one (http://dseidman.smugmug.com/gallery/7367399_4bNsb#475435312_wL7AZ) of them will format right.
All my other galleries lose the header, navigation bar and the black background. I don't want the breadcrumb trail or the Smugmug logo to appear at the top either.
What am I doing wrong?

Looks like you have hide owner checked under customize gallery. Also make
sure appearance is checked "custom" and not "Smugmug". Both will disable
your CSS.

Thanks for the quick response!
It turns out that two of my galleries had hide owner checked. Unchecking it fixed the problem. However, this gallery (http://www.smugmug.com/gallery/7421190_eGFLM#478298921_FCPKs) had both of your recommended settings correctly configured but it still won't display my custom settings.

No it doesn't, just need to fix the link in your nav.
<li><a href="http://www.smugmug.com/gallery/7421190_eGFLM#478298921_FCPKs" title="My Favorites">Favorites</a></li>
The www.smugmug.com will also disable your customization.
Here's your whole header with some corrections and link changes to relative
<div id="my_header">
<div id="my_banner"></div>

Still haven't figured what this is doing in your nav html.

I don't know how to code at all. Pretty much everything I've got was copied in bits and pieces and thrown together with some minor modification on my part. What I was trying to do was make the elements of the drop down menu align to the left. They looked a little awkward when they were all centered below the Galleries link. Was this a bad way of doing it?

The drop is always straight down, it's the flyouts that if on the far right go off
the page and might need to flyout into the page instead. See the right most
nav button here (http://allen-steve.smugmug.com/gallery/2327835).
So you can remove <div align="left"> and it's closing </div>
