Some of my galleries show 3 thumbnails across, others 5. How can I force the thumbnails to 3 across in all galleries so that the photo being viewed on the right is larger?

The number of thumbs is dynamically selected based on your browser window size and it is not adjustable by you. Make the browser window larger and more thumbs appear and the main image gets larger. Make it smaller and fewer thumbs appear and the main image gets smaller.

There is an algorithm that looks at the available height and width, figures out what main image size will fit and how much space is left over for thumbs and then puts all that onto the screen. When figuring out how much space the main image needs, it reserves space for both portrait and landscape images.

Not quite sure I understand. If you look at the following two galleries, without resizing the browser window, one has 5 accross, the other has 3 accross. Not sure how they got that way.

Ahhh, but those two links show a different amount of screen size available to the actual photo display area because one has your fairly large banner in it and one does not.

This one: http://mdmphoto.smugmug.com/gallery/7236167_z9puA#464960051_Spj8G has no header displaying which changes the amount of vertical space available. Either you set Appearance to "Smugmug" instead of "Custom" or it's part of a community or you've hidden the banner on purpose. Give those two galleries the same amount of screen space and they will show the same number of thumbs.
