View Full Version : smugmug gallery style, number of columns?

How is the number of columns to display determined? I have mine set to stretchy so it fills whatever space, but on a 1024x600 screen, it sets the columns to 5, which shrinks the current image to something ridiculously out of proportion I feel.

or is it based on how many rows it can fit? actually, that makes the most sense now that I think about it. Is there any way to change this behavior?

Thanks

Thanks From 1-5 thumbs, you get a larger thumb image size. Greater than 5 thumbs in a category and it goes to the smaller image size. If you're using stretchy categories, it just puts as many columns across as will fit.

I'm talking about in an actual gallery, using the smugmug style for viewing. It does indeed seem to be based on rows, but is there any way to change that? I would guess maybe taking it out of stretchy, and defining JS, but not sure what, or if it's even possible.

It has an algorithm that first looks at how big a main image it can fit without scrolling. It plans for space for both a horizontal and a vertical main image (since your gallery may have both). Once it has figured out how large a main image it can fit, it looks at how much space is left over for thumbs. Then, it has some sort of algorithm for deciding whether to go with large thumbs or small thumbs. Once it figures out large or small thumbs, it just fills in the space with as many as will fit. The algorithm is not very configurable, but there are one or two config parameters.

You can either turn off stretchy or you can lock the gallery to Smugmug small, but then you're stuck with small images (not wise in my opinion).

I didn't notice the size of the thumbnails changing, but maybe that's subtle. But what I'd like to see is something like defining the minimum space for a current image, say half the width. then adjust the rows/columns of thumbnails after that.

It's not that big of a deal really, I was just curious if it was something configurable, or if I should just drop it and deal. Thanks for the info.

I found this old thread. I was wondering something similar. I'd like
1) to reserve a minimum space for the current image, and
2) a minimum space between the thumbs and the image

Any suggestions how to approach this?

Thanks

1) to reserve a minimum space for the current image

SmugMug style automatically adjusts based on the size of the browser window (assuming that you have stretchy turned on). You can't reserve a minimum space for the current image - it is sized based on how the images fit into the space availalble. If you have more toolbars in your browser window (for example) there is less space availalbe for the photo.

Open your gallery and stretch and shrink the browser window to see the current image and thumbs resize.

The size of the image is in control of your viewer as the browser window is resized. I'm not aware of any way to override this.

Thanks four response. OK, actually I can live with image size, but I guess it should be possible to increase the space/margin between the thumbnail box and the main image. Or not?
