there we were today at nyc's coney island

we were on the beach enjoying some nathan's famous hot dogs, when out of the sky came a single engine 4-seater plane, crashing on the beach not 100 meters from us :uhoh

new york's bravest came in force, hoping to pull survivors from the wreckage... there were none (four souls lost)...

it was a tough day after that, we tried to make a go of the amusement park, but none of us much felt like "fun" after experiencing this.

and to those who witnessed the event. I would like to say "wonderful shots" but the nature of the pics it just doesn't sound right. You definately captured the event.

Was just 2 mins ago reading about it on a news site here in 0z. Terrible loss of life.

Would you have had time to run if you were under it ..any noise warning ?

Were your young'uns with you? I hope they are not too traumatized by seeing it.

yuh-- that's my youngest in the first piccie - and the older three kids are up a the top of the ramp.

Andy - I can only imagine how unnerving an experience like this would be. I hope your kids are OK. A very good indicator of why we must enjoy life in the moment.

I couldn't help notice that one of the firemen is named Schiavo.

Andy, that's just incredible.. Not something you ever want to see happen, but like a true pro, you grabbed the camera and took care of business and captured the moment.. Glad you and the family are ok..

Airplane wrecks like this are no fun. Unfortunately they're a little too common up here in AK where planes are the best and often the ONLY way to get anywhere away from Anchorage. My dad made it through one years back when the engine quit while landing, but as an airplane mechanic, he loses a friend every once in a while. Several of the planes I've personally ridden in are no more.

The saddest story I've heard though was when a few of my cousins were out at my great-grandpa's remote lake home, and a pilot circled over to wave his wings, went too low, and was taken down into the lake by a cottonwood tree. When they got to him in a rowboat he was already gone. For weeks afterwards when my 2-year-old cousin would see a plane, she'd say "uh oh, plane fall down."

This is awful Andy. I hope Trev took it OK. I know this kind of stuff can scar an older person, let alone a youngster. I thank the good Lord above, that you guys were 100 meters away when this happened.

Just another reminder that stuff happens. Also a good reason to show those closest to you how much you love and care about them , EVERYDAY.

My wife and kids were flying this weekend in a small plane just like that one.

What a shocking thing to have happen right in front of you. Thank God you are all OK. I hope Trev is not too disturbed by it.

Andy, I applaud you for having the presence of mind to take those pictures. I'm sure I would have forgotten all about my camera at that moment. Great shots.

Oh, dear. Must have been awful to witness. Thank goodness you guys were out of danger physically. Hope you don't have nightmares from it. My thoughts to the families of those lsot.

Andy - your shots are much better quality than what I saw in various news reports.

The crash caught my eye because that morning I had my first solo in that same type of plane (Cessna 172). The description of the crash that I saw on CNN implied there was a struggle or something weird in the cockpit just before the plane crashed. The engine quit, then they went up (which would've quickly caused a stall...no more lift, nose heads down first but if you're too low, there's no time to regain enough speed to pull out).

From the news reports, they were way below the legal minimum clearance (1,000 ft above the tallest obstruction within a 2,000 ft radius of the plane over a congested area). Perhaps the final NTSB report will shed more light on what happened.
