Hello! I am not much of a wilderness shooter. I love the wilderness and love to shoot it but don't feel I am any god at it. This weekend I went out on a boat and saw a ton of pelicans and I actually liked this one enough to post. You guys are all so good a what you do and I value your opinions. Thanks!

Hi Kyeezie,

This is a nice shot, but I have two suggestions to improve this type of shot:

1. When shooting birds with bright white feathers or bill, underexpose by .7, or so. This will keep the white areas from being blown out (over exposed). Check your histogram, too.

2. For composition, crop out much of the distracting detail on the left, especially the whitened branches. This will shift more focus to the interesting shot of the bird.

Thanks for the suggestions John and you are totally right. After I posted the picture I went to another computer and noticed how bright it was and how distracting those lighter branches were. I have some more pelican shots that may do a better job. Thanks again for the comments!

Nice brown peli. I agree with the John on the suggestions but you have the workings of a nice image.

Its a good capture and I agree with John.

For the crop you might try portait orientation so that the Pelican is on the left side of the frame as it is looking to the right.
