Hey Fink,
Not since the last episode of Deadwood has Linda heard such cursing as she did tonight when I read this post.
Lets see the Yosemite shoot was scheduled to coincide with my son's last leave before Iraq. Now Jason arrived in Kuwait on May 16, 2005. After doing his year in Iraq he is scheduled to return approximately 5/18 or 5/19/2006.
All I can say is may your cameras backfocus (I know that's not much of a curse since you own a Canon), may your lenses grow fungus, may the straps on your camera backpack rot, may your CF cards go sour, and may the legs on your tripod buckle.

We are going to Moab next month, for a couple of days. I've been mountain biking there in the past, but this trip is strictly for photography. Never been to the western side of UT at all.
If you ever ride there again... stay away from the not-at-all-friendly Monitor-Merrimack trail. It's more of a Jeep road. It was on the ATB trail map, but there was 4" deep sand about a third of the way in. Couldn't ride it. Had to push the bikes through instead. It might be a good walk - and it's very scenic, but whatever you do... don't attempt to ride it. Plus, there's swarms of large hungry horse flies near the stream. Sunscreen. I can't say enough good about using copious amounts of sunscreen. Don't forget the sunscreen!
After you get five lifetime's worth of Kokopelli figurines at the 100+ gift stores in town, there is a nice air-conditioned movie theatre at the southern side of the town. Lots of really good sandwich shops too.
Arches NP is a stone's throw north (you knew that - but for readers of this thread...), but very very crowded on the weekends, so go there at odd times (early a.m. might be good) so you don't get dozens of tourists in every shot.
Oh, and did I mention to bring sunscreen?
david_h
May-21-2005, 03:49 PM
..... but there was 4" deep sand about a third of the way in. Couldn't ride it. Had to push the bikes through instead. Yes, there were several crashes caused by running into deep sand at any kind of speed.
I must say, I'm looking forward to finding out if the beer at the Moab Brewery has improved since I was last there. It used to be a legend how bad it was.

In a Nat Park they probably won't let you use a bicycle let alone an ATV.
David_S85
May-24-2005, 07:58 PM
Yes, ATV's are prohibited. Bicycles? Dunno :dunno But.....
Llamas can be packed with quite a bit of weight, and they're good to very high altitudes. Didn't catch anything against Llamas though. My guess is that instead of Purina Llama Chow, they might eat Cherry Ripes (but that might prove costly). Anyone know where to rent Llamas in the southwest?

I know there are outfitters in Colorado that do use llamas as pack animals. Not sure of a reference for Zion or Bryce, but Il'll bet googling will turn something up.
Here is one I found just for photographers. http://www.outdoorutah.com/Articles/llamas%20companions%20on%20the%20trail.htm
David_S85
May-24-2005, 08:46 PM
And I thought I was making a funny about the Llamas. 80-100 pounds each, huh? Well, assuming there would be 80 people (60 photogs + spouses), each photog with 25 pounds of tripods, bodies and various glass per person... that could work out to 1 llama per 4 photogs - or 15 llamas.
Wait, Andy alone might need at least one llama, and perhaps two by then. He says he has a personal sherpa, but give the man a break and send his sherpa on a vacation of his/her own. We could request llama quotes for ~17-20 llamas. Maybe also a hire professional llama handler/feeder. There goes the Cherry Ripes budget.

Andy, I'd like to make a suggestion that you post important info like reservations, deposits and other particulars in a separate thread, a sticky that you lock, so that only you can post in it. We've got a year until this thing gets underway, and our 9 page thread will easily top 100 pages or more, and trying to find the important details becomes impossible. This is a problem we already had on the Yosemite trip. I like all the discussion that happens here, but it really gets in the way of finding the facts. Can we have a "Just the facts, ma'am" thread?

Baldy posted pics somewhere about a possible small hiking adventure we could all try up to a place called Angel's Landing. The sign at the bottom said...
ANGEL'S LANDING
STRENUOUS CLIMB
NARROW ROUTE WITH CLIFF EXPOSURES
HAZARDOUS DURING
THUNDER STORMS, DARKNESS,
AND ICY/SNOW CONDITIONS
Now, I needn't worry you too much, but the last time I was there, I witnessed dozens of llama skeletons at the bottom of the cliffs and ravines.

Well then maybe the zombie llamas will decide to stampeed for some reason, and the dust kicked up in the air and all the confusion will make it impossible for you to see anything from up there. So there would be no way of knowing what I am doing, which of course would be gaurding the boxes of cherry ripes from the now rampaging zombie llamas. :uhoh

After much of discussions my family decided to let me go on my own - again!
I guess I'll be bunking with some of you lads:-)
I'm still thinking of doing 10 days jeep/rv trip AFTER the official part.
The idea is to fly to St.George, rent a car (hopefully share with somebody), get to Bryce, move to Zion along with the crowd. Then on Sunday drive back to St.George, exchange the car for RV - and take off to Lake Powell, Antelope Canyon, Arches, etc.
Of course this would also require some reservation-cooperation, but I think it can be done later:-)

There's a strong chance that I can go but I have a couple of questions:
1. The $245 deposit, is that for deposit on the place to stay? If not, what is it for? My wife would feel more comfortable if we knew what this money was going for.
2. Flying into Vegas..when are people going? That Thursday morning? How will I get to Bryce? Everyone leaving on Sunday?
My wife and kid might fly in on Friday and stay with me, is that possible?
3. Can anyone on the east coast recommend a cheap airline?

I'm also thinking of doing some extra time, but as a pre-shootout excursion to take advantage of the previous weekend and making a full week out of it. Since the shootout starts on a Wed, I'd thought of heading off either the Friday evening before, or early Saturday morning. No specific plans yet and at this point I'm open to either driving to hit Death Valley on the way, or flying over and renting a car to go to Antelope, Arches or the Painted Desert area.
Any interest, let me know!

I did the pre-shooting last time - started Monday, drove up 101/PCH through Solvang, Hearst Castle, Big Sur, Carmel, SF and ended up in Yosemity. Now I think it was mistake - I learned so much during the shootout that I almost want to redo the pre-trip again - I would shoot the whole thing so differently.
That's why I'm planning the post-shooting in 2006 (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=12147&highlight=2006).
It has the following advantages:
1) you'd have two half-workweeks (one before, one after), so it will be easier at work:-)
2) mid-week flying/driving is usually easier
3) you'd be in a top-notch shape photo-wise, so all those nice places will be covered with the utmost creativity and technical excellence..
Wanna joind the crowd? We were thinking of getting few jeeps/RVs, share the expenses and having fun...
Cheers!

hi Nik,
I am still about 6 hours drive south of the Grand Canyon, 4.5 of Sedona, and a good day's drive from Utah. So - I can scout in Tucson, but not way up there! I also won't be driving through Vegas, I'd be coming up from the Southeast side of the Grand Canyon.

I've been thinking about doing something like this for a long time and now I have found it here. My question is this. I am fairly new to photography and am still learning the basics. I would absolutely love to go on this trip but I think I may be out of my element. But on the other hand I think this would be a trip of a lifetime for me and I would learn soo much from everyone there. Everyone on Grin has been very nice and informative but please answer honestly, would it be worth it for me to do this or would I be a fish out of water getting on peoples nerves by asking "stupid" questions? Your input is greatly appreciated.

You just answered your own question - "I think this would be a trip of a lifetime for me and I would learn soo much from everyone there." Yup, :nod there will be plenty of opportunities to learn there, and from and for everyone. Each photographer has their own niche, so not learning something new would be pretty much impossible. And that's why I am signed up too. Always more to learn, and to share what I know about to others also.
"...and am still learning the basics..." So you will stand to learn the most there, right? And yes, it would be worth going. Everybody learns more every day. I don't know a pro (at any endeavor, really) who would dare say they already know enough not to attend an opportunity such as this.
And the scenery (and food too, knowing how Andy picks these places) will be great, so what's not to like? Or fear? :dunno
Spouses of some are also traveling out there, and some of them don't know one end of a camera from the other, so it's not just about photography.

Hi Andy,
I'm back on my DLS line at home after being away for 6 weeks stuck with a slowwwwww phone line hookup. Being home is definitely good. :1drink
Have a female photo friend who has indicated interest in shootout 2006. As in my case, landscape photography is not her niche, but she is interested in learning and loves to hike etc. Is there still room?

Just stumbled upon this. Sounds like fun and if rooms still available I'd like to join in. Just curious about some of the logistics of the trip. Assuming I fly into Las Vegas what is the plan for transportation to Bryce and Zion? Do we make our own arrangements or is there going to be some type of group transportation arranged. Speaking of which, Frommer's has got a nice little guide book, Zion & Bryce
Canyon National Parks as do Lonely Planet (same title).
Either would be a great asset in planning your trip. There are several good
maps of the area too. One of which is the National Geographic's Zion National
Park map.
Something you can do that's a fun little excercise in planning is to build up a
shot list based on the sun's position in the sky. Say you wanted to shoot
The Three Patriarchs, would you shoot it at Sunrise, Sunset or some
other time? Sounds easy but it's a bit tricky and you might want to account
for several factors. Including the altitude of surrounding objects as well as
the angle of the sun and the height of your eye.
This was my attempt at deciding what I wanted to shoot. Anybody have
other ideas?

Thanks to Kudbegud, I was able to record this Discovery Travel one hour feature on my PVR. It's not HD (sigh), but it's well worth watching. It was great to see the same places I so vividly remember from my 2003 trip.
It also brings up a question, most likely to Andy: do we already have an more-or-less specified "route" agendas for both canyons, especially for Zion?
The reason I'm asking is that Bryce is far smaller and far more accessible. Well defined sunrise/sunset vantage points, just a handful of a relatively short and very easy (2-3) hiking trails make Bryce a relatively easy target even for a limited time frame.
Zion, on the other hand, is huge, and if you wanna get some really nice and unique shots you have to be ready for some pretty intense hikes (http://www.zionnational-park.com/hiking-zion-national-park.htm). Upper Emerald Pool (http://www.zionnational-park.com/zion-emerald-pools-trail.htm) (guide says 1 hour but in fact it's more like 2 or 3, unless you simply run back and forth), Angels Landing (http://www.zionnational-park.com/zion-angels-landing-trail.htm) (guide says 5 hours, I'd say it's more like 8 - and have 8Gb worth of media ready).
And the slot canyons of The Narrows - I'm not even sure how to approach it with all our heavy yet delicate photo gear.
Of course, there are easy vistas, too (Weeping Rock (http://www.zionnational-park.com/zion-weeping-rock-trail.htm), and such), but if you are in a good hiking shape and would like to take some breath-taking shots you better start planning now...

Okay.....forgive me for asking but I need to book my flights real soon to ensure getting to the 2006 on the right days :D

Please don't make me search the thread....I've been working my butt off for months now :D
Next question............ Nik...........what date will it be when the Post Shoot Out finishes, and is it for sure finishing in Las Vegas ???

Hope someone can sum it all up for me ........ Skippy (Australia)

Skippy, your best bet is probably Las Vegas' Mc Carran Interdimensional Airport. Then rent a car and climb the next 5,000 feet to Bryce for 'bout 100+ miles or so (I need to check the mileage of that - just guessing).
And yes, I did say Interdimensional. There are some strange people hanging about there. Aliens perhaps. The Area 51 flights for the workers take off from there. And no, I'm not kidding about that. Have your camera primed and ready.

A fellow photographer told me last night that having a National Parks Pass lets you bypass lines getting into the parks. Maybe this won't be much of an issue in mid-May. :dunno You can get one good for a year from first use online for $50 by going to https://buy.nationalparks.org/default.asp? Guess only folks who will be driving into the parks would need it, but is it worth it? Necessary? Advisable?

Doesn't really get you ahead of anyone but if you are a frequent park visitor,
any park, it will pay for itself on the third visit.
I usually buy one because it does save me money but also because it supports
the parks.

Yep. There is a Golden Age Passport for full time US residents who are 62 or older that I believe you have to buy in person at one of the national parks. I guess they want to count the grey hairs. :rofl Anyway, there is info about it on the website. I qualify :cry and plan to look into getting one after the holidays. Or maybe I'll just get one when I get to Bryce. I'm beginning to get excited about the shoot. :clap But gotta keep my mind on my Christmas list etc. etc. for the moment. Michiel, I have to tell/warn you - Zion can be very challenging hiking-wise. High altitude and steep cliffs would lay a certain burden on anybody, especially on somebody whose body still lives by Amsterdam time:-)
For instance, hike to the Angles Landing, while delivering breathtaking view, will take most of the day and all of your legs:-). And speaking of Zion's Narrows - we, post-shooters, will have plenty of the same or better later, but without the danger of dropping our precious equipment into the muddy waters...
Now it's probably too early, but at some point in February or so I'd like to start a discussion of what exactly we gonna do in each canyon (and definitely at each stop in the post shootout). I mean, those places are gorgeous, but, given the very limited time frame, like in Yosemite, sometimes you need guides..:dunno

The US Air Force has seen fit to allow me to get the $%&@ out. My exit date is 30 June and my terminal leave should start in the middle of May. That's PERFECT timing for a Bryce/Zion photo adventure and a road trip of monumental proportions (and it'll be prime beard growing time!!!). My money will be in shortly and my space is reserved with Andy. So I'm in.
Now I'll be driving from the Seattle area all the way there. I could do it in maybe 2 days but I'll probably take a little longer so I can hit sites along the way. I'm more than willing to take up to 4 other dgrinners down there with me (4 will be a bit cramped, 3 will be better) as long as you're willing to split the gas (and I've got a prius so that won't be so bad). The catch is that I'm not driving back any time soon (not until the middle to end of July probably) so you'll have to find another way back.
If there aren't any takers, I'll have a car that is wide open to help shuttle folks around (details can be worked out at a later date).
The average photographer skill level in the group has just dropped several points. :uhoh

Another Mod. in. Hooray! :clap But there's not gonna be anybody left to run the store. I do have confidence that Baldy will have a vBulletin plug-in to have this joint running on automatic mode by then.
And now I won't consider myself the only one nuts enough to do a multi-day drive down there (Mrs. D_S85 now almost offering me bribes NOT to drive - she's flying).
I guess congrats are in order for the Air Force retirement then? Is that a decision you've been pondering for a while?

The US Air Force has seen fit to allow me to get the $%&@ out. My exit date is 30 June and my terminal leave should start in the middle of May. That's PERFECT timing for a Bryce/Zion photo adventure and a road trip of monumental proportions
I mean, the official part is nice, but would you miss the roadtrip?:wink

I'm not sure if I'm joining this trip yet, but I suggest that people on the roadtrip stop at arches.
My parents just came back and caught this dancer in perfect turn-out during this December there.

Hi - for those of us not in the US can you tell us where Bryce & Zion are. I'm possibly interested in coming & would like to know more details so I can research flights etc.
Thanks
Nicola
May 17 & 18 @ Bryce
May 19 & 20 @ Zion
Details to follow - I'm in the process of making reservations etc right now. This trip will require you to make a decision waaaaay in advance, and give us a deposit. Rooms are nearly impossible to get if we wait too long, so this will be a trip that'll be nailed down as far as attendees etc. very very soon!
As to costs estimates for lodging: figure about $40 per person per nght at bryce and $75 per person per night at zion.
Air Travel: in / out of Las Vegas is best.
Marc Muench will be our landscape pro in attendance.
Many more details to follow as they get decided.
EDIT: rooms will have baths/shower & loo :D
Who's in??
*** all official info on the trip will be posted into this thread (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=12592) ***

Hey all,
I just had a suggestion I wanted to throw out there (as geeky as it may be). Many people now have the FRS/GMRS radios for camping/hiking/skiing etc... I have four, and I've used them for many such events and they come in very handy if you're within the 3-10 mile range (depending on the unit and terrain). It might be a good idea to specify a pre-determined "Call-in" channel for the event for a couple reasons:
- People that are looking for the right place to park, meet, etc can "call-in" and get info as they approach
- During the Yosemite trip, the entire dgrin group was split into several small groups to go shoot the sights with one or more people that were experienced and somewhat familiar with the area. It might be helpful for each group to have at least one of these radios so that they can kind of keep in touch throughout the day's shooting activities.
- I'm guessing there's not much cell phone coverage in the park.
The nice thing is that these radios are fairly low cost ($30-$80 for a pair typically).
If this seems to be more trouble than it's worth, no problem. Just thought I would throw it out there, realizing that I may just be a sucker for gadgets. :D
What'ya think? :dunno

Agreed on the radios. Great idea, as I seriously doubt that 50 of us would be hiking in one big group.
Wish I owned a set of FRS. Diana & I will be bringing ours, but alas, they aren't FRS, but UHF (a little more range though).

Yeah, I hear that. And if there are any other Ham radio operators out there, I'll be bringing my handheld HT (up 50 miles range). I figure...what the heck...as long as I have space in the backpack, might as well bring all the gadgets. :wink

I suggested them for Yosemite trip and I more than suggesting to get it this time - even though in canyons they are not too much usefull. But for the post shootout we'd need them, esp. if we end up with more than vehicle. I'm gonna bring a pair of my motorolas..

:nod Here's a good consumer report on a few models:
http://www.consumersearch.com/www/electronics/two_way_radios/fullstory.html
Motorola pretty much has the market cornered right now, and people have seemed to be the happiest with the range and battery life of their models. The "Talkabout" is the most popular series of models from Motorola.
There's a list and info about all of Motorola's models here (http://direct.motorola.com/ENS/phoneselect_TwoWay.asp?country=USA&language=ENS&productid=29129&web_page_name=TWOWAYRADIOS).
You pretty much want to go with one that has decent range capabilities. Some people can be disappointed with the range of the cheapest models, but I guess you get what you pay for, right?
I have a set of Talkbout T5000s, and have been pretty happy with them. You just can't expect the world of these radios, since they are manufactured to be very low cost. They advertise up to 10 or 12 miles ranges sometimes, but that is only true in optimal conditions on the GMRS channels (channels 1-7 and 15-22), since they are allowed to have a higher transmit power level at those frequencies.
The other catch is that the FCC started requiring a license for the GMRS channels (kind of like what they tried to do with CB radio about 15 years ago). Of course, the manufactures wait till the fine print in the manual to tell you that. The good news is that you don't need a license for the FRS channels (8-14), but you have lower power (about .5 watt), which limits you to about 3 miles on a good day. Since I use them so much, and already have to pay for my other FCC radio license, I went ahead and sprung for the $100 GRMS license fee (a lot, considering that's more than most of the radios cost). I wonder if a whole group can operate under once license...
Of course, as these things go, the FCC is going to have a heck of a time regulating this rule, since soooo many people are buying these radios...so... (not an official suggestion) I wouldn't be too worried about it for occasional use...but you didn't hear that from me. :hide

Hi Kendall and David,
Thanks for the info and the links. Not being a radio guy though, I'm a bit at a loss comparing the various models. I found these at JR for the same price, $59.99. From your viewpoint which model would you get and why?
SX700R 12-mile http://www.jr.com/JRProductPage.process?Product=4042404
T6500R 5-mile http://www.jr.com/JRProductPage.process?Product=3996405
Or, for $100 or less, what would you get?
Thanks!

Or you could spend the real money on the Kenwood FreeTalk XL (http://www.kenwood.net/indexKenwood.cfm?do=ProductDetails&ProdID=39&Gro).
It's a 2W radio with a nice, consistent 5mi range.

Jack, the SX700R seems to give you more bang for your buck, both in features and output power (thus a little more range). Personally I would go with that model as opposed to the T6500R, even though the SX700R is a little bigger in size.
Just my humble opinion.

I havent been to bryce or zion in a very long time. Not being a landscape shooter, what kind of gear would someone need for this trip? I have a lot of lenses covering 20mm to 200mm and soon to 400mm.
I'm pretty sure I can get the time off at work and this sounds like a fun trip.
Feeling pretty lazy, I didnt read all 13 pages, are people splitting cars/ Suv's to get around?
