Great photos, Harry. I thought they were going to be the babies......

I am going to Magnolia this afternoon, unless something stops me. I am afraid my one nest of babies, they will be in college by the time I get back. In my photos other nests still do have eggs, had to do the photo to see the eggs.

I bought a bird book. A SC one, hard to choose, almost went for peterson, but there was some local stuff.

anyway, i read about one of those egrets, I think the snowy one, that their babies are not born all together, and often the last one born starves.

Other books did not include that info. it is not in my book, but thought it was interesting.

also read about the woodstork, of which you have a GREAT photo above. it doesn't live here except in the summer and it is not a very abundant bird. so many types of birds have come back, and i am sure it has, but not in great quantities.

i would love a woodstork photo. am trying to hurry with all now, so that i can leave when i feed the dogs.

Hiya Ginger,

Good luck wth your shooting.

You're right about the eggs not hatching at the same exact time. Both the great egrets and the snowy will lay around 3 eggs. The youngest one is usually pecked to death or pushed out of the nest by the two older chicks.

This has been a bad year for the woodstorks. Thet are endangered due to the loss of their natural habitat. The building boom in southern Florida has been disastrous for them. I just got word that the woodstork nests at Ding Darling have failed (5.000 -10,000) nests. The water levels dropped so the woodstorks couldn't feed and they had to abandon their nests.

The only thing I can do is keep shooting them when I can who knows maybe only way to see (not including zoos) in few generations, if that long. Anyway enough rant. I'm going try find some birds tonight, meselft :D

Hey Shay,

Thanks for the kind comment. Its funny when I first looked at the 3rd shot I almost culled it out because I was so ticked at myself for cutting off the one wing's wing tips.

Fortunately I gave it a second look.

Hey AJ,

Thanks. Fortunately the east coast storks seem to be doing ok. Problem is that the Ding Darling colony was a large one and teh wood storks habitat is disappearing especially in Southern Florida.

Lovely. BIFs are better with context, IMHO, so the background really helps.

Thanks a lot Gus. It goes to show how little I know. Everybody seems to respond to #3 and that's the one shot in the set that I almost culled out.

I agree Sid but when they are in the sky it can be hard to get any background. :D I can do it the rookery but in other locations it can be a tad harder.

Man, you have been knockin these birds dead for the last few weeks. Each of your threads have had some great shots inside :clap :clap

I really think that you need to shoot some flowers or insects for awhile. Just to give us slowpokes (who have been saddled with lousy weather) a chance to catch up :lol

J/K buddy :D Super set as usual.

Thanks Tom. The wood stork is kind of ugly and a challenge to shoot (white body, dark head :uhoh ) but I always find them interesting too.

Unlike you, I'm afraid I've had it with STF, and I won't be posting there anymore. It's a real pity, I learnt more there than from anywhere else. I still participate in KTF, though.

Hey Mike,

I have to laugh because that shot seems to be the most popular of the batch and that's theone I came closest to culling out (the wing tips were clipped). :D

I can't blame you. I'm ready to leave but its like a car crash you know its bad taste to look but you just have to look.

I was aware of the clipping, but, firstly, the photo has real movement in it, and secondly, you can't expect there to never be some clipping sometimes. In fact, it sort of empahsizes the movement for me.
