Here's your photo assignment for this week: Architecture.

As always, photos must be fresh - taken this week, not stuff you've got hanging around on your computer.
Any form of architecture is fair game. Architecture should be the main focal point of the image.
You are encouraged to use your submissions for Cletus' weekly Digital Darkroom Challenge.

Note: please title each submission, as we're going to attempt to start a poll at the end of the assignment period and ask people to vote for the best image.

Extra credit: buildings over 50 years old.

Very good topic though, fish! I'll get right on it - should be easy on one of New England's oldest college campuses!

This picture doesn't count, but it is my favorite architectural picture. My Priest said to me who was standing there with a small, tiny Canon Elph, he pointed at the high ceiling and said he wanted a picture of that. I told him he wanted a different photographer who had better equipment. No, I was to do it. And this is what I got. I think it has to do with the twelve Apostles. All of it is symbolic. I think it is beautiful ginger

Great idea for a shot. That's where the wide angle comes in handy. You could get really close to the old house, let it occupy the foreground, with the modern building filling up the screen as a backdrop. Find a 3/4 angle to the house, get low and point up. Something like that, anyway. Could be a cool shot.

I hope you don't consider this file hanging around on my hard drive if I actually took this picture this past Monday. I have been meaning to get a good picture of this Synagogue for a while now, and it just turned out to be fortuitous that a friend of mine needed to get an MRI right across the street and needed me to give him a ride there.

I have been in this synagogue twice. I am not that religious, but on a sunny day, it definately feels as if it is filled with the glory of G-d.

I am going to suggest that the moderator remove shots that do not fit the rules. Folks seem to be completely unable to control themselves and the number of old pics is to high. It screws up the mental process of evaluating the submissions that do follow the rules.

An important part of many architectural projects is public art.

Here's a whimsical clock. At the top of the hour, balls roll down the raceway
striking the bells. Reflected in the glass (at the upper right) is the one of the
buildings in the project. This qualifies as a self portrait too.

#8 (assuming dizave's pic was after or on Apr 30th and not before.)

#16 (no title and no time stamp)

#18 (Dirtdog with another dated valid entry)

#26 (Ian's dated pic but comment intead of title "Matihilda Avenue")

Know what you're saying, charles, but I'm with the others. Loose and informal is fine by me, as long as Fishie doesn't get bent out of shape. This is his playpen, so I'll abide by whatever rules he wants. I just like the overall informality and friendliness of the site, and would rather bend a few 'rules' than damage that comraderie. It's what sets this site apart, IMHO.

Maybe we should make sure folks clearly identify their old shots as such, so they don't get roped into the winner's poll by mistake?

But thanks for the solution to the problem Fish had, which is how to label a photo in a poll if the photo doesn't have a label.

Easy. Just use the post number, Fishie. Easy as sin. :D

So his rules for the assignments are that we should take a pic based on the theme, not go rumage into our past years or even past week's archives. I tend to think that requiring him to "get bent out of shape" as a prereq to following his rule is not fair to Fish or to the folks who want to do the assignments and interact with others who are doing the assignments.

For crying out loud the assignment threads are only 2 each week, folks can be free and easy as can be other threads!

The weekly thing is a really cool idea and we can all make it work.

So far, the pictures in this thread focus on permanent structures. But what about all those temporary creations that don't get a chance to stand the test of time (or where never meant to)?

Here's one I shot while at camp last weekend. It was brought into camp in pieces by the scouts and lashed together to create a cooking surface for a couple of days, then untied and packed back out.

IanIan, you're subconciously transfixed by the thespian vibes it puts off...These were put out for the patrons and actors during the annual three day Shakespeare in the Park festival here. In the daylight hours before the performance commences, you can sometimes hear the occupants rehearsing their lines as you pass...
That and the oaks in the background maybe¿

Ginger,
The yellow home is a nice subject, too bad about the drab weather. My minds eye would have liked to have seen a bit more balance in the windows, or a focus on only one of the windows with perhaps barely a glimpse of the other. Level the camera angle (which I didn't do...) Then a bump in the contrast... Here's an idea, built out of what you had in just the few minutes I had available this morning... I think that home is worth reshooting, it has some great potential.
Just trying to help with my .02 cents...
Keep at it.
I remain,

From the fortress of Philippe Auguste (1190) to the completion of the "Grand Dessein" (1870), the Louvre palace has extended progressively along the right bank of the Seine.
Just a little over fifty years old, over 800.
The image is one of many I have of it due to its size it would be impossible even to do a stitch of the complete building as all the external walls turn this way and that making up over two miles long.

Howdy John,

Welcome aboard! :thumb for jumping right into the Photo Assignments.

I like your shot. The shadows from the chimneys really grab my attention!

Technically you've done an outstanding job with this picture. Everything apears sharp, and the exposure is right on. It would have been easy for the highlight on the roof to be overpowering, but it's not. There is still a lot of detail in it.

Composition wise you've done very well also. The tree along the right edge and the branch in the foreground are a little distracting, but otherwise it's very very good.

Maybe it would help if each person who has multiple entries were to choose one or at most two and let Fish know that those are the ones to be reviewed and rated. Then when Fish puts together the list of entries, the number will be more manageable.

Took a couple of hours this afternoon on my way back from a Dr.'s appointment, and stopped at a couple of local spots I love. These are St. Lukes Church, in Isle of Wight County, Virginia. It is deemed to be the earliest Church of England in the United States, dating back to at least 1632. A simple structure. Yet really beautiful in it's simplicity.
