This post does not pertain to dSLR bodies with the 2nd shutter button for portrait shots.

When you shoot portrait and your taking a hand held shot... So do you have the shutter button up or down?

I only ask this because, as an example, I see pathfinder (http://www.dgrin.com/member.php?userid=125)s avatar shows the button up and I've always shot with the button down. This just feels more comfortable and stable to me.

Personally, I shoot with the button up.

I shoot shutter up. If I shoot shuter down I shoot with my thumb.

If I am going to shoot portrait all day I will shoot button up, then to do a landscape I will rotate the camera to the left. It will be upside down and probably really look weird, but it gets the shot!

down is way more stable for me, but my avatar is from 'that time' when I hadn't figured that out yet :D

I always shoot button down to keep it steady. That's also the way my tripod swings for portrait. I think I read somewhere that if you are using flash in portrait that you should hold the camera in the position that is "button up"...I have no idea where I read it...wish I did. I know for rotating on smugmug it's one step faster because the right rotate button is already selected, so I figure it's the most common.
