One of the unique features of dgrin is that you can post pictures here to your heart's content. Are you wondering how? Here's a quick "how to."

**MOD EDIT: We've replaced Sid's original tutorial with a link, so that we can stay up-to-date with all the new features.**

Sid:

Try as I might, I am not able to get my images to pst through this method... Of course I am using a Mac G4 with OS 10.2, and so the right click thing does not work for me... But when I do copy my link, it shows with Gallery instead of photo, and doesn't seem to work... It looks like this:

Ginette,

Here's what the URL should look like for that shot.

http://throughthelensltd.smugmug.com/photos/3006477-M.jpg

You'll see it has the photo size (M for medium in this case) and also jpg (for jpeg) at the end.

Since you're on a Mac, have you tried to Control-click on the picture, and copied the image location, or the Properties? Then paste that here and see if it works. I think Control-click on a Mac does the same as right clicking in Windows.

Nope Sid... That certainly didn't work... Even tried the Mac key...
Made my life easier.
Just saved the formula, and will insert the photo number into that as I up-load....

Thanks so much for giving it a try.

If you look at what you pasted between the [img] brackets, you'll see it has URL at the beginning and end. Remove those, and it will work perfectly. This is what you have between the [img] brackets (I've added asterisks so that it shows up:)

[*img][*url]http://throughthelensltd.smugmug.com/photos/3006491-L.jpg[*/url][*/img]

And this is what it should look like (again, I've added asterisks:)

I am on Mac OS 10.3.3. What browser are you using?

I use both Safari and Firefox.

Firefox is a little faster to use to copy and paste in a post. If you control-click the menu will give you the option for "copy image location" paste that into the IMG brackets (the little picture of the mountain icon) and it should work well.

Safari is not as easy what I do is "open image in new window" then copy the URL and paste it into the IMG brackets.

Hope that helps.

Usually I am pretty quick at picking up this stuff... I really am not sure what I am missing.
I've been using Internet Explorer, but I have Safari as well.
When I go to my webpage, I select the gallery and then open up the sub-cat if necessary, then the image.
This is what comes up...
http://throughthelensltd.smugmug.com/gallery/91524/1/3698428
When I patch this into the Insert Image bar, of course there is no image.
I am not able to get to the jpg link.
I am able to find the jpg link IF i go to view source and read through all of the HTML tags until I find it... Auuggghhhh
Thanks,

Ginette, you had it on the dog shot.

All you had to do was remove [*url] from the front and also [*/url] from the back and it would have worked perfectly. I removed those and that's how I was able to post the shot of your dog.

OK, so let's just go through this a step at a time.

First, let's do it the Internet Explorer way. You have an image in your gallery. It's the size you like.

Using your Mac and Internet Explorer, Control-Click on the image. A box appears. At the bottom is a line that says "Properties."

http://wxwax.smugmug.com/photos/3906374-M.jpg

Click on Properties. Another box appears. Where it says URL, copy that entire line. (It's in blue in the next photo.)

http://wxwax.smugmug.com/photos/3906373-M.jpg

You now have all the information you need to link to a photo. Open a new post. Click on the yellow box.

http://wxwax.smugmug.com/photos/3906375-M.jpg

Paste your link into that box and clock OK. Hit Submit Reply and the picture will appear in your post.

If you're using a Mozilla browser, it's even easier. Find the picture you want to link to. Control-Click on it. In the box that appears, click on Copy image Location.

http://wxwax.smugmug.com/photos/3906376-M.jpg

Then it's the same as before. Go to your new post. Click on the little yellow box and paste your link.

As I go through this, it occurs to me that you're not clicking on the yellow box. You're clicking on the box with the chain, aren't you? Tsk, tsk, tsk. That's for linking web pages, not images.

To link to an image, you have to use the yellow box. This little guy.

IE is different on the Mac. It is still a version 5 browser. Microsoft stopped supporting it a long time ago. When you control click on an image it does not give you properties option. If you are control clicking on your correct size image you want (small, medium or large) pick open image in new window. Then copy that URL and paste as wxwax stated. The URL should look something like this at the end with a S, M or L representing your image size.

This is what I see when I work in Safari on the mac (as I stated earlier Firefox is easier to use, only one step involved-copy image location) when I ctrl-click (or right click with a two button mouse) I select open image in new window.

http://patch29.smugmug.com/photos/3919343-L.jpg

Then copy the URL from the new window which should only show the image in the size you choose s, M, or L. Then paste in the IMG link on your new post and that should be it.

http://patch29.smugmug.com/photos/3919342-L.jpg

I do not know why in my screenshot it shows M-1.jpg at the end, but it works. Normally it would be -M.jpg.

Baldy can you answer that?

Baldy

I do not know why in my screenshot it shows M-1.jpg at the end, but it works.Sorry about that bit of confusion. After you've used one of the tools to crop, color adjust, rotate or something, we have to give it a different URL or your browser will not bother to fetch the adjusted image.

I think the easiest way to get the image URL is to click the "share with friends/forums" button you see below each photo. Here's a quick help section about it: http://www.smugmug.com/help/picture-sharing

Hello Patrick down in Atlanta... I want to Thank both you and Sid for alll of your effort. This has been driving me nuts. Thank You for the affirmation... I knew that IE was not responding the way I was being advised that it should.
This being said... This episode prompted me to solve the issue another way... My father made me aware that Mozilla had it's new browser available, and so I have downloaded Mozilla (5.0) 1.7b... The Right Click on Works, and I can easily extract the info needed. I will however go through all of the instructions that you sent and give it another try in IE... But to be honest, I have been dissatisfied with IE and Mac mail, so now I have another option at my disposal.

So guys, thank you so much for pushing me enough that I took the leap and made the change. Hopefully this will be one of my last IE correspondences.
Thank-you, Thank-you...
Regaining normal BP,

If you are linking from a smugmug account you also need to make sure that you have the following settings on your "customize gallery" page
"external links" = "yes"
"larges" = "yes" (pro accounts only & assuming you want to post a large picture:D)

I want to chime in too to say thank you. It was driving me nuts too that I did not find how to do multiple post attachments.
Finally I found it. In safari on panther, it is indeed go to the page where your pic is, copy link into new window. The URL from the new window then goes in the post, after I clicked on the yellow image window.
It works a charm now...

Thanks to all who worked on this problem.

You can shorten the steps on that if you switch to Firefox. Then when you right click or Ctl click (with single button Apple mouse) you will get a menu with "Copy Image Location" Then after you click http://www.dgrin.com/images/editor/insertimage.gif you can hit cmd-v to paste in the location. Completely cuts out a window creation.

It seems like you're trying to attach a photo, right? My recommendation is that you skip right over the attaching thing (lots of ugly limitations and bandwidth considerations) and post your photos on a sharing site (like smugmug), then direct link them. You won't have to worry about size issues then. Except from moderators when you post a 50k x 120k pixel image. :D

I would suspect that your ISP does not allow hot linking and they are substituting the web address. You have entered the link correctly and see it at first in your browser because the image is cached, when you reload the page you see the change.

I think it is just from your website. If I cut and paste the URL you used I can see the photo. The easiest option is to use a different source to host your photos, that permits linking. There are some free services out there and you could always get a smugmug account for $30.00/year. It gives you a lot more control, ease of use and it is just a good deal. (It is like the Mac of photo sharing sites :evil)

Yes, I'd try it from a site that allows you to link your phtograph to here. As you might have guessed, lots of folks here use www.smugmug.com. The two sites are run by the same guy, Baldy. But there are others.

HOW DO I FIND THE PIC THAT SAYS I POSTED.. IM NEW HERE.. HELP

Option #1.
Attachments.
(Attachments are not the preferred method, they eat up a lot of Baldy's resources. And you can only post 1 pic per post.)

You have the picture on your hard drive. You'd love to show the world what it looks like. :encore
First, either start a thread, or hit the "Reply" button in an existing thread.

http://wxwax.smugmug.com/photos/1993130-M.jpg

Next, scroll below the box in which you write. You'll see a grey area, and a button labeled "Manage Attachments" (highlighted area in pic.)

http://wxwax.smugmug.com/photos/1993129-M.jpg

When you hit that button, up pops a box. Cllick on the "Browse" button, which takes you to your computer. Go find your picture on your computer and when you find it, click on "Upload." Then close the little box, and "Submit" your post. One catch - you cannot just attach a photo all by itelf. You have to put something in the text box as well, even if it's just an asterisk or exclamation mark.

http://wxwax.smugmug.com/photos/1993128-M.jpg

How do you know your uplink worked? Wait until you see this message before you close the attachment box.

http://wxwax.smugmug.com/photos/3127455-M.jpg

Uplink failed? You didn't get the message I just showed you? Maybe your file is too big. If you wait long enough, you'll get a message similar to this one. The max upload size is 117kb. Don't ask me what that means... I just know there's a limit to how big your photo can be.

Nice stuff Shockwave.

If you are new to online forums I will try to give you a brief rundown on how this one works so you can get the most out of it.

For your shots to get the attention they deserve you will need topost them in the right place. Start out at the FRONT PAGE (http://www.dgrin.com/index.php?) of the forum.

It should look like this

http://dehmphoto.smugmug.com/photos/15452514-L.jpg

Find the forum title that fits the image you would like to share. The list looks like this and is on the front page. Click on the title to open the particular forum.

http://dehmphoto.smugmug.com/photos/15452313-L.jpg

A list of threads will open. The ones in bold type have posts that you have not read. (YELLOW ARROW). The ones in normal text have not had a new post since you last read the thread (RED ARROW).

http://dehmphoto.smugmug.com/photos/15453144-L.jpg

To start your own thread, click one the "NEW THREAD" button in the top left corner of the page.

http://dehmphoto.smugmug.com/photos/15452316-M.jpg

Note that your new thread must have a title (YELLOW ARROW). Type your text as well as linking photos in the larger section. This works much like your word processor with the ability to change fonts, text size, bold, Itallics, text color, etc.

http://dehmphoto.smugmug.com/photos/15452317-L.jpg

When you have completed your message hit the "SUBMIT" button under the window you are typing in.

Hello!

Before trying to post a picture: Is there a prefered size? Or if my picture is too large, will it be downsized automatically?

I'm asking this because my pics are hosted on flickr, and they store the pics in different sizes (500px, 1024px, and original). I would like to post the 1024 pixel size because of the detail, but this might be a bit on the large side. 500 pixels is very small, on the other hand...

Thanks!

Can't get there from here. Wax and Pathfinder: I get the same error message as Dave. I've tried some other threads in that early range, and they were still valid (although some lead to restricted area's giving a different error message). Weird stuff.

Edit: the How To Thread seems to be here (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=8401) now, instead of at the old link. Or is this yet another one?

Interesting.

There are two links in the first post of this thread.

When I click on the first one, it takes me here. (http://www.dgrin.com/forumdisplay.php?f=7) This is now the Photo Challenge Forum, so I should probably edit the first post to remove this link, because it no longer makes sense as a "Show Us Your Best Stuff."

When I click on the second one, it takes me here. (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=92) This thread is still the one, the only, the great "How to Post a Pic" thread.

Dunno what to say, folks, as both links still seem operational. What browsers are you using? Are they set to allow pop-ups from dgrin? :dunno

When I click on the first one, it takes me here. (http://www.dgrin.com/forumdisplay.php?f=7)This one I get. It's f7 (the Seventh Forum), which currently is renamed to the Challenges forum. :)

When I click on the second one, it takes me here. (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=92)That one I don't get. It's a PHP showthread function that leads to the Ninety-Second Thread, which no longer seems to exist in the database for people trying to get there now for the first time. May be it's in your cache when it shows for you? Can you go there, try a refresh, and see what happens? But if I simply use a showthread that leads to the Eight Thousand Fourty First Thread (different location in the database, same thread), I can get to that topic just fine so no worries here. You might just want to edit the original post, showing the new location, and people should be able to get to it just fine.

wxwax
Apr-27-2005, 07:22 AM
Interesting. I clear out my cache often enough that it wouldn't still be there since the thread was moved. Refreshing didn't make any difference.

Good suggestion, thanks. I'll go ahead and change the source for the link in the first post, as it's giving folks problems. Perhaps it's a vbulletin/browser thing, who knows. :dunno

Linkie works for me too Sid. Mac X Firefox. But you can always insert an image into your text if it is 800 pixels or less wide and hosted on smugmug or someplace on the web by using

"www.your images URL" in the body of the text without the quotation marks also. The second link Sid showed still directs me to his earlier thread about how to post a picture - nice young lady in a short skirt et all.

But regardless of whether you can get the link, if your pictures are hosted on smugmug or pbase or elsewhere on the web, the instruction I gave about using the image tags will work. For instance, I shot a little Red Wing blackbird the other day and uploaded the image to my smugmug.gallery which you can see here

http://pathfinder.smugmug.com/gallery/213634/11/20445236

When you right-click on the larger image of the blackbird in the tree you will see a menu labled 'Element Properties' tht includes the image's URL or Location which is http://pathfinder.smugmug.com/photos/20445236-M.jpg

If you type into the text box you are posting in

and omit including the quotation marks and the spaces between and http and jpg - what you will see on dgrin is the following - but rather than typing just right click the location and hit ctrl-C to copy the location URL to your cliboard, then ctrl-v to paste it in right behind the image tag in your text box.
http://pathfinder.smugmug.com/photos/20445236-M.jpg

Bingo - you just posted an image. IF you right-click over the picture of the bird here on dgrin, you will again see the URL for the image on sumgmug.com that was typed between the tags because that is where the image is stored on the web - thus saviing dgrin's servers from having to store all those images too.

IF you do not have a web host for your pitchas (AND you should for a variety of reasons) you can attach small images files ( less than 105 Kb) by hitting the Manage Attachments button below the text box you are typing into - it is about 3-4 inches and several lines of text below the reply box - But once you press the Manage Attachments button it will allow you to browse your hard drive to locate the file you want to upload. Then you just follow the directions and hit Uplaod and wait while the file is uploaded. This is slower than linking and does not allow you to use higher quality images due to file size limitations for attaching. But it will allow you to upload pictures if you donot have a web host like SMUGMUG for your images. You really need a smugmug account to be a happy digital photogrrapher on dgrin:D This will make Baldy - the owner of all this domain very happy too. :thumb

Hi Rufio,

If you read the instructions in this link (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=8401), you'll see that can only attach one image per post.

But you can link as many as you want per post.

So the difference is between attaching photos to your posts, and linking photos to your posts.

Make sense?

to post a new thread: go to the forum you want to post in, say portraits, and click on that forum.. in the top left hand corner you'll see a little tab "new thread" just click on that and fill in your title and picture.. hope this helps!

Option #2
Link to Your Photograph
(Preferred because it uses fewer resources. And you can post multiple pics per post.)

First, store your photos online. Pay a few dollars a year to have a site host your photos online. Baldy runs Smugmug (http://cmac.smugmug.com/) and we all love it. But there are others, such as pbase (http://www.pbase.com/). Just make sure that wherever you have them hosted, you're buying the right to link to your photos.

After that, linking to them here is easy. Once again, start a new thread or reply to an existing thread. A text box appears: above it there's a little yellow box (highlighted in pic.) Click on it.

http://wxwax.smugmug.com/photos/1993513-O.jpg

Up pops a little box. What you need to paste in there is the location of your photograph.

http://wxwax.smugmug.com/photos/1993512-O.jpg

Wow, that sounds tough. How do I find the address for my photo? Easy. Go to your photo, wherever it's being hosted. Right click on it and scroll down to "Properties."

http://wxwax.smugmug.com/photos/1993493-O.jpg

When the little Properties box pops up, just copy the "Location."

http://wxwax.smugmug.com/photos/1993494-O.jpg

Then paste the Location into the dgrin box I showed you earlier. And voila, your lovely photo now appears in the thread of your choice. Can't be too hard, a computer retard like me just did it five times in this "Reply" alone! :super

So this looks like a safe place for me to try to master this img link thing ...

OK let's see if that worked.

Sorry Man, it doesn't work. If you paste that... http://www.igs.net/~yesamen/Dgrin_resizes/Dscf1465.jpg
into your browser you'll get a picture but it doesn't display here.

Let's try another one ...

Still no!!!

But if I give you a link without the [IMG] tag you'll get a new browser and a picture ...

What am I doing wrong? Could it be that I'm using Netscape 7.0 instead of IE?

If this works then I'll load my Dgrin resizes to my own web site host until I get to open an account with SMug.

We want to wait until after we move to our new house (closing date: Nov. 18). Then we should have faster connection speed and it will be better.

The reason I ask is that the gallery must be setup to allow "external links" in your customize gallery setup.

Ed, the reason was, you had "external links" turned OFF in that gallery. Leave them set to on, and you'll never have that Blue ? or the Red X.

I fixed it for you in that gallery you pm'd me about.

Here it is June and I still don't have an answer to this. So much of what I take is kids at church events and I don't want to post kids pics (I feel that is up to parents). Thus, I wouldn't have much to put in a Smugmug account; but every now and then would want to put something here. It seems that I have more landscape shots than portrait. Why does the direction of the larger dimension matter?????

The last time I tried yes, it would take 800 wide by 1200 tall but. . . why won't it take 1200 wide by 800 tall. That seems to be the same size but just the other oriniation (sp?)???

800 pxl wide is the largest size horizontal/wide that the these web pages are designed to handle...nothing to do with the same amount of total information...lets say you have an 11"x14" horizontal landscape photo for a double page spread in a magazine that has a 14" double page width...no matter what ...the horizontal dimention has to be 14" no matter what!! If you have a 17"W x 9"H print...it has nearenough the same square area...but the 17" width cannot fit the 14" width of the magazine...Sometimes it is the simplist things are the hardest to understand.

Does anyone know if Blogger allows external posting? I started my first thread with three pics I have on my blog and I could see them in dgrin (probably because of cache?). Now here's the weird part, some dgrinners could see them, some couldn't - why would that be?

I understand how to upload via attatchment (but don't like it) but I really don't want to do that because of the nasty limits. Any thoughts?

One of the unique things about dgrin is your unlimited ability to post photos here. And we really want you to take advantage of that to share with us your shots.

If you're not sure how to post a photo, it's dead easy. So easy we have an illustrated guide. Just click here (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=8401) and you'll see a post called "Wanna Post a Pic Here?" It will show you everything you need to know.

Yay!!!! This was my trial! I am on a mac as well and never knew that about ctrl click!!! Thank you so much!!

It's not a valid file, it must end in .jpg...

ALso some sites block "external links" and so while you may be able to see it, because it's in your browser's cache, we won't be able to see it.

I've been troubleshooting a linking issue related to Internet Explorer and my vanity URL--if I link to an image within a gallery and leave off the "www", IE gets me to the gallery but not the right image. Firefox and Opera don't seem to be affected by lack of "www".

Any clue why? The two links below theoretically both take you to (a larger) image of that plane, but in IE7 you'll end up on the gallery's first photo instead.

http://asdavidson.com/photos/179923003-Th.jpg

#1: URL Link is to http://www.asdavidson.com... (http://www.asdavidson.com/gallery/3240706#179923003)

#2: URL Link is to http://asdavidson.com... and IE7 fails. (http://asdavidson.com/gallery/3240706#179923003)

Both links are to the gallery. Neither is to an individual image.

On most web pages, a link to an image will end in .jpeg, or .gif etc.

The URL showing at the top of your galleries doesn't include a .jpeg. I'm not technical, so I don't know why that is. But if I go into Properties and copy the URL, I do get one that ends in .jpeg.

Oh, oops, I think I might have been unclear in explaining my question--I can embed an image in the forum just fine; I was just wondering why if I want to provide a link back to that page in my gallery, I need the "www" on the URL for IE to work (left out, IE takes me to the gallery but doesn't highlight the right image), but not Firefox or Opera. So the links #1 and #2 I provided were for clicking through in IE or Firefox to see the issue. The thumbnail was just to demonstrate what image those links *should* take you to.

I looked all over the many tutorials in your signature, and read thru several, and while there's good info to be found on how to post, I still am in the dark as to how to read EXIF data on photos posted by others. Clearly others aren't having this problem, because I see reference to it all the time. I also see posts where a responder actually modifies a posted photo. I know the answer is probably right there for me to see, but, hell, I'm 60 yrs old. My eyes ain't what they were.

Ah. I get it now. Reading is hard. :D

If they haven't embedded the EXIF into the post, then you need to find your way to the original gallery, which isn't easy unless they link you to it. But for an image that is simply embedded without the EXIF or gallery link, you're going to have to ask, AFAIK.

I think I understand how to attach the exif if I'm using an uploaded file however my file is attached. Think I will get a Smugmug account but in the meantime, I have a posted image without an exif. I moved the image from Nikon's Picture Perfect to a file in my backup hard drive. When I open it with Photoshop I can find the File Info but haven't been able to embed(?) the information with the image. Any suggestions? I've searched but perhaps it's in one of these forums so any directions would be appreciated. Thanks! Jen

Well, a couple of things.

1) You can't put an image in the title of a post, it has to go in the message

2) You need to use the correct URL for the image and enclose it in the proper tags. Read the tutorial at the beginning of this thread, or the one linked in my signature, and then ask any questions you may have.

3) Which galleries are you talking about? :ear

Just an FYI, I just started using pBase and my first link to a gallery there was in a forum here on dgrin. The instructions at the start of this thread work for every other site I've used but not for pBase. If you copy the URL from right clicking on the image in a gallery, it doesn't work. You take the address right out of the browser address bar (or whatever you call it) or you can go into their Image Edit window to pick up the URL. They've got instructions on the Help pages as follow.

To get the direct linking URL for an image, view the image and add .jpg or size.jpg to the end of the URL.

This works just like linking to an image page but append .jpg to the end of the URL.
example: www.pbase.com/image/image number.jpg
example: www.pbase.com/image/image number/size.jpg

Note: to direct link to a .gif, use the .jpg extension also. It will still send the gif file.

You can also easily get the direct linking URL by viewing the edit image page and looking in the top right corner of the page, where the URL for linking to the medium size of the image is given.

Hi there,

I want to ask a question about the sharpness of the photos I'm taking with my new D300. To do that, I need to give fellow dgrinners access to the original file size, full resolution photo. (Right?) I don't have SmugMug yet but I have the two photos on flickr. Is this the way to link to it so others can view it at 100% and analyze sharpness and focus points?

Hello. I have been having some issues with posting images. I have done it many times in the past, with no problems at all. However, within the last month, I have posted images that do not "show" up for others to view. I have checked the gallery I copied the images' urls from, and all seems to be correctly set up. I use one dedicated gallery for images I post, so that I do not change or forget to change any settings. Also, I have tried to add new images to my slide show gallery, and all you see in the slide show itself (located on the home page), is a blank space. I do not know if this is related to the posting problem or not, but, it started happening at the same time.:scratch

Thanks for taking the time to help.

I upload my photos from my .mac Gallery to share on Dgrin, but I am unable to change the size from large to small or medium etc. Is there any way to share a smaller size of my photos? :scratch

Thanks :D

Dgrin works with the size of the image you supply. So you would need to resize the images before you attach them. If you are linking, resizing in the host gallery is another possibility. But Dgrin itself does not have resizing functions.

Thanks Richard. If I used Smug Mug as my Gallery site, I would be able to choose a size, yes? And if so, how would I get my photos from Aperture to Smug Mug?

Yes, SmugMug handles resizing automatically. You would simply choose the size you want (typically, large) when you link the pic to Dgrin. I don't use Aperture, but I assume that it has a function that lets you save a JPG version of the converted pic on your computer. There are a number of tools on the SmugMug Web page that you can use for uploading the JPG.

You could try this (http://davidholmes.org/aperture-to-smugmug.html).

Great! I thought there was an Aperture plug in for uploading to Smug Mug, but if there is not, you are saying that I would export the photos I want to upload, onto my desktop, and then batch upload them into Smug Mug?

Thanks David. I saw some posting regarding this. Bottom line question for me is: Does it work and have they fixed the bugs. I am a Mac user (Leopard 10.latest) and I would really like to use Smug Mug. Do you know if this is working for Mac users or is it very buggy>

Thanks :D

Yar, I've seen 'em. Since posting this, I've seen a post talking about DGrin not allowing embedded HTML. No biggie. Thanks.

Parts of dgrin does allow, others don't. I've lost track of which is which, but if' you're doing it right, you're just not in the right part of dgrin to embed. :deal

Nobody has answered my above question (unless I missed it somehow). Can anybody help?

The posting issue has been resolved, I'm still having problems with the slide show.

You are using the old no longer supported slideshow and none of the new photos
will run in it since the security update. Switch to the new show here (http://dgrin.smugmug.com/gallery/3624147).

Remove old slideshow code

Thanks! Not sure what rock I've been under (ha!)--I did not know (or probably forgot) about any change(s).
