Size of Images, help please

Hello,

I was wondering if I could resize my images to 72 dpi, 8x12" for my galleries? Will this be big enough for the smallest size option for viewing? I am not allowing printing options at this time.

Forget about dpi, and inches and such. Sounds like you're shooting a DSLR with 3:2 aspect ratio. Just resize your images to 1600 or greater pixels on the long side and all will be will fine :thumb

Most are my images are from 20D or 40D Canon. Do I need to add the basic web sharpening or not? I remember Smugmug being a little different in regards with sharpening.

Do you realize that you do not have to resize your images at all before upload? I never downsize my images. Smugmug will auto-generate all the various web-sizes from whatever you upload (as long as what you upload is large enough).

The advantages of not downsizing them before upload are that you can do printing sometime in the future (if you so decide) and Smugmug serves as a full resolution online backup for your JPEGs.

The only disadvantage to uploading full resolution images is that the uploads take a little longer.

I apply a medium amount of sharpening before uploading as the last step in my processing. Smugmug does applies some sharpening (how much is adjustable on a gallery by gallery basis if you have a power or pro account), but their sharpening is designed to counteract the natural softening when they downsize to create the web-sized versions. It is not designed to take an unsharpened image and make it sharp. Start with a properly sharpened original (when viewed at 100%) and Smugmug will attempt to retain that amount of sharpness when they create the web versions.
