CatOne recommended this PDF book, so I bought a copy for $25. I haven't gotten through it, but it's chock full of good tips and habits for PS. Anyone who feels that they need to understand PS better would do well to get a copy.
I'll share one tip that I found in it--making an editable burn/dodge layer. Click on the layer that you want to burn/dodge. Option (alt) click on the new layer icon. In the dialog box that pops up, choose Soft Light. Now paint with white to dodge and black to burn. Play with the size/feather of your brush as well as the opacity. Pretty cool!
You can buy a copy of the book here. (http://www.msjphotography.com/bookstore.html) He's got some free tips posted here. (http://www.msjphotography.com/tips.html)
