Are Gallery Keys Necessary?

I have noticed several sites that do not use the gallery key (ie. 1234567_aBcDe). I tried that on my site, http://www.rinkshots.com, and the page simply does not display. Any ideas what I need to change?

Gallery keys are required for all new galleries (those created since gallery keys were implemented). I believe that older galleries may be accessed without the key for backwards compatibility reasons (previously existing links).
