Ok, now I really will (try to) shut up and sit on my hands for 2 weeks. This is gonna KILL me! :giggle
Having just come off a 'time out' because I was a judge I understand how Divamum is feeling right about now. It wasn't quite so bad for me , I had MC2 that I could participate in. But seeing all the threads and not being able to participate I was going a little :crazy .
So Divamum, here is a place for you to babble for the next 2 weeks.

Wow, now I know y'all care ::snif::
Yeah, I know I"ve been babbling of late but honestly - my "real life" has been so difficult and stressful the last month that I think I'd have gone slightly mad without dgrin and the challenges as a place I could "create", but TOTALLY unrelated to the rest of my artistic world. And this last challenge was a particularly "chatty" one feedback-thread-wise, so I've been enjoying it.
Thanks y'all! I promise to behave. Honest I do. Really. :D
This can now be the catchall "coffeeshop" thread. All welcome. Have at it!

YES! Another thread we have our utterly silly way with!
I move that we all keep Kiki sane too and move the discussion about languages here and mix it with everything else that comes to mind :D
So if Diva doesn't mind?
To add to Pyry's comment Finnish sounds like jibberish because it's not related to any other languages spoken in Europe (except Estonian and Hungarian).
There are no gender nouns like "he" or "she", which simplify things somewhat but then, everything and everyone is an "it". :rofl
And Hungarian is a veeery far fetched relation. There is a group of languages other than Estonian and Finnish, but none of those are spoken widely.
Finnish has is a genderless third person pronoun 'hän', which translates as he or she depending on the context. However there is a tendency in spoken language to switch to 'se' (= 'it') even if that can sound a bit mean.
How do you say EXIF in Finnish?
'eksif'. Just dry the x up, if you're pronouncing it something like 'egsif'.
No letter "x" in the Finnish alphabet. So I guess it would be "eksif". :rofl Come to think of it, I don't think there's an "f", either....:scratch. In that case it would be "eksiv". But then, Finns often like to add extra vowels at the end, so then it would become "eskiviä". :D
I'm sure that Pyry will chime in with the correct answer. :rofl
We have an 'x' , how else would we ever find the spot? (The phoneme always written as 'ks' in native words - it's in the alphabet for compatibility basically)
'F' is there as well and actually gets some use occationally. Our alphabet is the same as in English with å, ä, and ö added, which then covers practically all spoken phonemes. Reading and pronouncing written words is very easy. There is a dialect that pronounces 'f' as 'v'.
eksifin eksifistä eksifiin eksifiä eksifiksi - confused yet? :lol3
Presumably something like "ellllxiiiiiifyy" (Finnish always seems to be i's, l's and y's) :D :giggle
Pronounce this: 'kaksi jäätelötötteröä'. :rofl
(translation: two cones of ice cream)

Yeah, go for it - we don't have an OT forum here, so this can be a great catchall thread for all of us. Yippee!
And the Finnish ice cream cones now have me near appoplexy since I can't even START pronouncing that (I speak French, German, a bit of Italian and can pronounce Latin, Russian and Czech, but I've never needed to learn any of the Scandinavian languages, Hungarian or Finnish - except proper names, of course, which I ALWAYS make it my business to try and pronounce right, however clumsily)

I'll let you off that one :D We can try saying it one day on the first sharp-but-occasionally-not-shooters meet-up.
The two ice-cream cones come from the teacher who tried (and failed) to teach me German. It was the favourite phrase in Finnish of one her German friends who came to Finland and learned it here. When the friend went back to Germany, the words 'Kaksi jäätelötötteröä' got spray painted onto the Berlin wall in letters the size of cats.

Actually, we should just have it printed on the other side of the SBONSS tshirts as an identifying marker :D
Here's my best guess using English phoneme spelling (and "oe" = German o umlaut)

1pound sausage cooked with 1 small onion all browned and drained
6 eggs beaten well
1 cup bisquick
2 cups shedded cheddar cheese
1/4 stick butter
pepper to your hearts content
spray glass 9x12 baking dish with cooking oil or coat with butter. Blend all the above ingredience and pour into baking dish. Cook at 350 degrees oven untill a toothpick or fork comes out of middle clean when tested. About 30 of 40 minutes.

I can, again, categorically state that target archery is really difficult when you have to shoot on an empty stomach. I just pulled off my first ever over 9 point average 30 arrow set and then lost it and slumped back 16 points over the next 30... (which is still the best 60 arrow set I think I've ever done at this distance).
Scorecard for the day, 18 meter indoor targets:
54, 55, 54, 52, 57 = 272 (9,07)
53, 51, 47, 55, 50 = 256 (8,53)
total 528 (8,80)

I may adopt "Dwarven" as my favorite new word (it's dwarves, believe it or not, although some people think it's dwarfs. See Stephen Sondheim's musical "Into the Woods" for a HILARIOUS exchange about dwarfs re dwarves)

Don't worry, it's a guy thing. You would have had to been born a boy to know that throwing, or shooting, things at each other is the next best thing to the latest National Geographic. All those half naked people (read women) running around and being able to call it educational because it is such a respected magazine. Nothing like being hit up side the head with a dirt clod by your best friend. I'd have some great memories if it wasn't for all of the concussions.

if you shoot a arrow up and you loose sight of it you never will be able to see it coming down.
...hence panic mode .....(it comes down as fast as it went up btw)
in the story of my friend & i, he shot a arrow way high in my direction and it came down 5 ft from me...(without me knowing it was coming in the first place)
so the funny thing about my poorly written story is:
he knew at the same time i knew that i was going to try and shoot him "on purpose" for scaring me....(may i add with his own arrow)
being a teen i didnt think it through and came real close to really hitting him....

Actually, it would all have been lost on me alas :huh - haven't been around these here parts long enough to know who ANY of them are by "sight"! (I know I joined in 2006, but that was only so I could use the search function and ask a couple of questions when I was shopping for my first dslr - which I didn't acutally BUY until 6 months after that - and I only started seriously reading this past summer, so I'm still a n00b by my standards!!)
:)
the idea was for you to spend time looking through shootout threads looking for this or that person...kind of a "wheres waldo"....

But I digress, the back of my mind is singing the dwarven Gold-song as "Food food food food..."
What do you shoot....bow wise.....I have an antique Ben Peason recurved recurve , an XI compound and a Matthews......we do not have an indoor range any longer....it seems with all the bowhunters and the few that actually get to try out for the olympics (yes we have produced some truly fine shooters here) that no one will support an indoor range....
I used to go to the invitational tourneys set my 80# PSE NOVa at 110# just to see the judges reactions to me shooting clear thru the running bear target or seeing the reaction of the shooter just in front of me when I robin hooded his shaft and i was shooting a naked bow......almost got banned when they found out I was over clocking the bow by 30 pounds........

Seriously, I think it's great that we have a "chitchat" thread - there's no OT forum at dgrin, so maybe a chitchat thread can become a permanent fixture and we can just start a new one when it gets too long (perhaps with a more generic header next time so it isn't seemingly "my" thread!!)
Btw, for HGGG fans, skip the movie, TV series and even the books (good though they are) - the place to go is the ORIGINAL BBC broadcasts that started it all (the first version, not the "cleaned up" one they did after it became popular, which is stone dead in comparison). It is without question one of the best things the Beeb ever put out.
And if you like that, you may also like "The Wordsmiths at Gorsemere" which came out around the same time - it seems to have been a "golden age" of BBC radio drama!) (It's an affectionate parody of Dorothy Wordsworth's diaries which has far less to do with poetry than out and out, brilliant radio-drama humour. It's *brilliant*.)

Honest Story: (Not for the non hunter) A friend of mine, at Snoqualmie Pass, WA, bought a compound bow, and over the summer he practiced. He applied for all his hunting permits/licenses the next year. He got/shot his early season doe. A buck mid season. He even got an 800# Elk, but (unknown to most) shot across a paved road (illegal), and then got the ski area to use there boom truck to hoist it from a swamp, never having to carry a quarter carcass (of his catch) at a time out, of the Forrest, like most. Then he got his black tail. Remember, first year bow hunter. He also dropped a smaller black bear sow (mama), first year. Then, believe it or not, he won the lottery to get a goat off of the mountain side. Only a limited number are issued in Washington, and he got one. He didn't go for the goat, whoo, whoo. Sound bad? It is. He didn't have kids to feed, no wife to feed, ate more than his share at the restaurant he worked at, and on top of that, didn't even own a deep freeze. I cringed at his gains that winter on the mountain. That's the dude that shot the arrow into the air above my head. The locals sent him off of the mountain at 'terminal velocity'...the speed his arrow would have hit me, if I had been in the wrong spot, when his straight up, came straight down. Scary dude.

Do I get to rant about my computer problems while I'm here? My mac went white last Saturday night. I seem to have it working now, after restoring the system, but for a while my computer thought it didn't have a hard drive. So I couldn't restore or reinstall or anything until I got it to recognize the HD. It was quite frustrating. My warranty expired about two weeks ago, too. I'm not a computer person at all.
I did photos with Santa (pro bono) at my preschool on Monday and had to just get photos printed straight out of camera so the parents would have something. I'm so relieved to finally be able to do some editing and get them uploaded to smugmug.
Now my whole family is on winter break for the next few weeks, so maybe I'll get a chance to do more shooting for fun.

Big ouch on the computer! But I stand in awe of having shooting skills strong enough to print sooc for other people. I'm getting there, but I'd be afraid to do that still (and I feel a terrible need to overshoot, too - I just don't trust my viewfinder eye enough yet...)
Ah yes, winter break. The hard part is the transitions I find - takes a few days to get used to ALL of us being together ALL the time again (it's a small house), and then when everybody goes back it's way too quiet and we don't get to do the fun stuff any more!
Btw, I was thinking about you (Caroline) yesterday - I'm making my first efforts at self portraits and kept thinking of those nice ones you posted a few weeks back. I want some lights! :)

Yikes! I had similar issues (non-mac!) following a snowstorm and it's power outages here a week or so ago. To add insult to injury I run a RAID 0 array (Im not explaining that!) where my op system and applications reside. I ended up having to go in and install the drivers for the RAID controller on the motherboard and also lay down a dupe operating system to get it to revive...and recognize all my hard drives. It really sucked...and I had surgery this week which although gave me time to straighten the thing out...I really didnt feel like it.
I learned my lesson on data security before this upset. All Data is stored on SATA drives that are used ONLY for storage. I could easily move these to a new computer. In addition, I have a few external drives that I back up to regularly. One for personal photos, and another for files related to hired work.
Good luck!:D

Another ouch -for computer AND you! Hope you're feeling better...
I'm debating what to do about backup at the moment. I seem to be working almost exclusively on this laptop right now since this new one has a card reader, and have wound up only storing on the built-in hard drive instead of the external drives we use on the desktop. I'd love to network the whole system, but EVERY SINGLE TIME we have done that we've either wound up succuminbing to one to one of the security issues in Windows or not getting it to work with all three computers in the house, or some other glitch so we gave up. Mayber I'll try again over the holiday.
So I guess I'll to start burning the pictures to DVDs now (note to self...) - I really should have partitioned the (large) drive when I got this thing, but I wasn't planning on keeping vista and "only tried it out". To my surprise, I liked it, and now have too much stored on it to justify partitioning via format (is there a way of doing it WITHOUT formattin? If so, then I could take a chunk and use that for dedicated storage... hmmm...)
In the meantime, off to go sing Messiah this afternoon. Last gig of the season. Nice to survive this month - December is VERY busy time for all musicians, but also opera's biggest audition period - all the companies descend on NYC and hold auditions for forthcoming seasons.

DVD's or CDROM are fine for "temporary" storage. They won't last forever. In my opinion, they are safer than storing on a laptop. You realize that most hardware issues with a laptop will require you to send it to the manufacturer. The first thing they will tell you is that there is a chance you will lose all your data.
The best advice is safety in numbers.
In my o.p. I didnt say that most of the photos that are important to me or my clients are also stored on smugmug's servers. That's a plus.
External harddrives aren't foolproof either. They are more trustworthy than a dvd/cd.
I prefer internal sata drives. It would be easy to move them to a new pc, or an external enclosure that will accept them. They are also, perhaps, the cheapest solution if you look at the $/gigabyte aspect.
As for my surgery, I am in some pain....maybe even more than I was directly following the procedure. I am hoping it will pass soon. I am planning to brew up my annual Christmas seafood gumbo and have already spent the required fortune on ingredients. (fingers crossed)

[quote=jeffreaux2]DVD's or CDROM are fine for "temporary" storage. They won't last forever. quote]
You're not kidding. We have a huge collection of commercial CD's, and hubby is just starting to see the first wave of disks which are deteriorating beyond use; it's nothing like the "permanent" medium it was thought it would be. It's even worse with non-commercial disks.
I considered putting some extra storage into the desktop via internal disks, but eventually took the "easy" option with external drives. I need to do a significant backup on those as I'm behind with my sound-file backups, too.
Hmm, sounds like I'm going to have busy holiday! Needs doing - it's one of those things that if you don't build it into a routine it is soooo easy to let it slide which tends to bite one in the proverbial! This discussion is a good reminder - thanks. :nod

My daughter needs to read this. Her boyfriend has her convinced that macs never have problems...
So, last night when I went to bed everything seemed fine. Then I woke up to a frozen computer again. When I finally decided I needed to restart and try the disc utilities, my HD was "missing" again. After hours of troubleshooting, my HD finally showed up in disc utility first aid. I was able to run a disc repair successfully and a permissions repair. This was something I hadn't been able to do earlier this week. So, this time, I didn't have to restore from back up or completely reinstall. It makes me hopeful that I've finally resolved the issue. I was also able to select the HD as the start up while I was doing the disc utility thing from the install disc, which I wasn't able to do yesterday before restoring from backup.
I'll cross my fingers and let you know how it goes.

I've been able to repair disk and repair permissions. But it keeps freezing and forgetting it has a hard drive.

Don't Mac have superduper service for that kind of stuff? I thought that was one of the attractions? (I'm a pc girl through'n'through, but my Macintologist friends always rave about the tech bar, so...)
Good luck with it - we had absurd problems with our desktop back in the spring, wound up having to reinstall the OS several times and it was just a prime nuissance. I feel your pain!

My warranty just ran out weeks ago, so I think I have to pay for any tech support. I've been trying all the troubleshooting advice on the Apple website, and also the discussion threads, but nothing keeps my computer up. Never had trouble before, so of course now that the warranty has expired...Blah.
I looked at your self portraits. Congratulations on your courage. I know how hard that was for me. I won't comment on the photos yet since I can only see them on my husband's laptop and not my pretty Mac screen.

Some thanks to Caroline,
I know you are frustrated with that mac attack but still...
Reading your frustrations and the ensuing discussions about file storage and back-ups in general have led me to an epiphany moment as far as my wedding photography clients are concerned.
From now on...
Instead of CDROM or DVD to hold the files they buy, I will present the files to them on one of those sexy little Western Digital Passport drives. Pity they don't come smaller than 160GB, but for less than $70, I think it will make for safer storage AND also a class act at presentation time.
:nod ...there are even the little sleeve thingys for them that I can get my sister-in-law to monogram for me. This is gonna be suweeeet!
...I hope you get things sorted out soon. In my opinion, the only thing more aggravating than computer problems is car troubles.
Good Luck!

Umm, I'd hate to burst your bubble, but you are aware that a portable HD can be ruined just by dropping it off a table, yes? As a customer I'd be perfectly happy with a dvd.
It's not a bad idea though, now that I'm thinking about it as I write this, but you will have to serve as off-site backup for your clients :D

Can I just say, I've just been reminded of one my favourite things.
I opened a fresh pack of Earl Grey tea last night. The smell is intoxicating, it floated faintly around in my kitchen even while the leaves were floating around the pot.
That cupful was a delight :lust

I'll second that mmmmmm on the waffles. No time to make homemade today though. I have cookies to bake. So, cookies for lunch probably.
On that other subject... My clients who purchase a disc also get the images downloadable through smumug. So if something were to happen to their disc, they still have access to the files. And even if my external drive fails, I at least have my important jpgs on smug.
I finally called a repair shop for the imac now that it's been over a week (so stubborn, I know). It'll be $90 for them to diagnose the problem, and of course they may not have time to get to it today and they'll be closed from tomorrow until Monday.

NOBODY should be at work the day after Christmas - Boxing Day should be a legal holiday everywhere, not just in the former Empire!!!! :D
I've kept myself sane this round by planning how to spend money I don't have - or THOUGHT I didn't have. Happily, my family listened to my pathetic pleas for cash-for-camera-gear for Christmas (we embargoed spousal gifts in the wake of my jobs for next year evaporating, but my parents still were giving - but they usually like to get something *tangible* instead of financial contributions or gift cards so I wasn't expecting anything.) In any case, I just ordered me an ste2 which, for some reason, seemed to be on sale at Amazon. As in... the REAL Amazon. Woohoo! Off camera flash at last! (unless I get an email telling me it's not really available - apparently it was the last one in stock. I still can't figure out why it was cheap since it's new - maybe an open box or something? I guess I'll find out, but since it was about the same price as KEH but didn't have their whacking great shipping charge, it was a no-brainer. Here's hoping it isn't a loss leader of some kind..... I'll cling to the good thought that since it was Amazon-for-real it isn't a scam and the worst that will happen is that they don't really have it in stock and I'll have to keep scouring the used listings on FM and POTN until I find one....)

I am excited for you!!!...and BTW have made MANY gear purchases from and through Amazon. In fact I will more than likely be ordering a 50D and 50mm F1.4 lens through Amazon in the next week or so.
Also....I got an email offer today for a Pantone Huey....a calibration device for $69. That's a bargain as well....but I already have a device. If interested lemme know!
FWIW, I used the STE2 and a pair of 580EX flash units to light all my Christmas photos.
This first is a shot of my seafood gumbo cooking on the stove. You can just see one flash unit at the top right corner of the frame ...the black object atop the shelf.

Sending you a pm about the calibrator, since that's the 3rd item on my shopping list :)

I had to work today too... but I celebrated Boxing Day by giving notice to my employer... yes, in a crappy economy, I'm willing to give up a job...
See, my soon-to-be-former employer (AT&T), through a joint venture between labor and management, is helping pay for me to go to umpire school, specifically the Jim Evans Academy of Professional Umpiring (http://www.umpireacademy.com). It's being held in Kissimmee, FL, the spring training home of the Houston Astros. We're actually using the Astros complex (classroom, fields, batting cages) for training.
As crazy as them helping pay for it sounds, that's not why I decided to give notice today. Before finding out I'd been given the money, I had already asked for a leave of absence to go. I'd been told by my mom that she'd loan me the money if AT&T didn't pay.
No, the reason I decided to give notice is this. A week ago, I found out my request for a leave of absence had been turned down. It was almost as if they were saying, "Hey, here's the money... but you can't go." They were trying to claim that the work that was coming in next month was so important that they couldn't let me go, and they needed all hands on deck (tell that to the people who sit around on their asses all day not doing a damn thing). So, today, I wrote out my resignation and handed it to the same manager that was surprised I made it through training almost 5-1/2 years ago because I spent most of the first week with my head down on the desk because of a severe case of sinusitis (it was so bad that I went in that Friday with a temp of 102.1).
It's possible that going to the Evans academy will lead to a job in minor league baseball (one can hope), but even that small chance at a job I would absolutely love made it worth it to give up the job I have...
Thanks for listening to me rant... when they told me the leave request had been turned down, they took me into a room and shut the door because they were afraid I was going to start yelling. Only reason I didn't was because it wasn't the fault of the people telling me.

*pulls a map out* Aah, I see! You would get bears there too.
I'm glad we don't have that problem. The northern most coast of Norway is at the same latitude, but warm currents keep the ice cap and the bears on it well away. So you'll only have to worry about having to do that with a brown bear.

I spent Christmas Eve and Christmas Day together with my husband. It was nice to not have to run around those two days. Christmas was very low-key, which is what we like. We had made some purchases for ourselves before Christmas, so it was very low-key. :rofl He had bought a GPS navigation system and I had bought a Canon 40D.
But the quiet and low-key Christmas did not last long. Yesterday we went to my in-laws out on Long Island. Fortunately it was only a 2-hour drive each way, which rarely happens. Usually one leg is 2 hours and the other leg can be 4 hours. Tomorrow we're off to NJ to see my relatives.

Ok, so make me green with envy: what kind of chocolate? If it's Leonidas, I may be in mourning for the next 24hrs... (oh... muh... guh.... that stuff is AMAZING. I spent a lot of time singing in Belgium for a while, and I would load up on that stuff before leaving the country!)
Not green. Fazer's blue. It's a very nearly Finland specific kind.
hmm, there's an idea...
... I missed. I'm much better at eating chocolate than taking pictures of it.

All I'm gonna say is...
homemade eggnog ice cream is beyond my wildest dreams. Oh... muh.... guh... (and the apple pie I made to go under it isn't looking too shabby either!!!)

Diva, I for one hope that we failed in trying to keep you sane these past few weeks. You are now free to move about the cabin, but please don't mind if I lock the cockpit before you do!

Hmmm... does that mean my particular brand of insanity is entertaining, or just completely baffling???!!!???!!:scratch:D:giggle
Actually, even though I now am indeed free to read all threads again ::phew:: (!), it's been kinda nice having a catchall thread in here... not sure I'm ready to give it up yet!

Both... :D
And I don't think I'd wanna give it up either... maybe renaming it the Catch-all thread would be useful...

I would chain myself to this thread to keep it from going :D
A new title might be a good idea, I agree. Something along the lines of "shooter sharpener"?

I can't lock this one (Alan, as the thread originator, can you?), but, I started a new thread to keep us going in a slightly less Divamum-centric kind of way :D
New thread here (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?p=1001925#post1001925)
Have at it!
