In Smugmug, a video can play at four different sizes from "web" to "hi-def". From 360x??? to 1280x720.

At times it may be helpgul to known in advance what size a video will replay.

What determines the maximum size it replays at? I expect it is the size of the uploaded non converted file or the size of the converted file to h.264. Correct?

If so, is there a table that lists what a video will replay at dependiing on the file size?

Also, if it is dependent on the size of the converted file, can I use the size of file I convert to MPEG 4 h.264 prior to upload as a guage?

Thanks
Phil

The table is here: http://wiki.smugmug.net/display/SmugMug/Video+Formats

When you upload, the dimensions of the video must exceed the ones listed in order to make that size. So A 800x600 video would be converted to 640x480 and a 320x240.

Thanks. I am curretnly converting all my videos to 1280 by 720 because that is the maximum size (HD) available on Smugmug. Also, converting it to H.264 reduces the file size for uploading and since Smugmug is using that codec, I expect it reduces conversion time and any potential anomalies.

So, to have 1280 by 720 be shown, I understand that the limit in length of the video must not be 5 minutes for a pro user. And I probably should convert it to say 1440 by 900, or something above 1280 by 720?

Hi-def size is dependent lenght of the video (not exceed 5 minutes) and uploading a video above the hi-def dimensions (1280 x 720).

Is this correct?

Thanks again,
Phil

Uploading 1280x720 will get you the same size. There is no need to go to 1440.

If you exceed 5 minutes with a HD video, it will be converted to SD up to the 10 minute limit.

So yes, to get HD upload 1280X720 and less than 5 minutes.
