Details about album position?

I have some questions about album position and how this affects sorting of Categories and SubCategories.

Can two albums have the same position if they have the same category and subcategory?
What if they don't have the same category?
If so, how are ties broken?
What happens if I set an album's position to <i>i</i> and there is already an ablum with position <i>i</i>?
Are categories and subcategories ordered by the position of their album with minimum position?
If not, now?

I thought I had a clue about gallery positions and how they impact the order of presentation of categories and subcategories, but now I have an example that proves I'm clueless.

I have two categories, each with no subcategories: Nature and Museums.

Nature has one gallery and its position is 622

Museums has three galleries and their positions are 691-693.

But Museums shows up before Nature.

On the other hand I have a category Friends with no sub categories and a single gallery with position 683 and it shows up after both Nature and Museums.

So now I'm guession that I have no idea how categories and subcategories are ordered. Is it just not exposed?
