Here's your photo assignment for this week: Hats.
As always, photos must be fresh - taken this week, not stuff you've got hanging around on your computer.
Any hat is fair game. The hat should be the primary focal point of the image.
For extra credit, use your submissions for Cletus' weekly Digital Darkroom Assignment. (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=1113)
Have at it.
http://www.dalton.org/faculty/bender/JJ.fedora.JPEG
Edit: assignment changed from "People with hats" to just plain "hats" to accomodate people who don't like shooting people.

I tried to take a pic of someone with a hat today, and got a lecture about the difference between hats and caps. And no picture. My only other potential model rides a Rockster 80 and hates me. I'm guessing I'm sitting this one out.
At least I have an extra week to work on contrast.

You may be unclear on the concept, dizave. It's not about finding models and staging them. It's about grabbing your camera and going outside to get candids of people you don't know wearing hats.
As far as definition is concerned for this assignment, caps are included.
A covering for the head; esp., one with a crown and brim, made of various materials, and worn by men or women for protecting the head from the sun or weather, or for ornament.
I didn't take this one either:

Get a hat and a mirror (or other reflective surface like a lake or a window or a well waxed bike or....) and be your own model.

I missed a perfect opportunity yesterday. Driving to pick fishwife up from downtown, and I'm sitting at a light. I glance to the right and just about to cross the street in front of me is an elderly gentlement wearing clothes from another era and a beautiful straw hat. Camera was not at the ready and I missed it. :(

And last but not least, here's another photo of a re-enactor with the 15th NJ Infantry, which was an actual, historical unit during the Civil War.
As for missed photos, I am still kicking myself because I was over at the tractors when they fired their rifles. I headed back to see if they would do it again, but didn't make it in time to get in position, and I have this deep, ingrained fear of stepping out in a firing range, even if all they are shooting are blanks.
Enjoy,

I just got my new 28-135mm IS lens and I had to try it out a little. Yes I used a small amount of gaussian blur. Portraits are hard....I need to work on people a little more. She was a good model. Pretty, nice smile, would look right at the camera. This was a quickie, hand held in the back yard. She had just come out of the shower. Phoro is better in full resolution. Looks like your nude, partially nude, project is comming along.

Lynn,
Here is my thought on this photo........not that I know anything about the subject. :D But I would like to see this warmed up some, with perhaps a little less light, (a little darker), maybe slight amount of contrast. Maybe try the sun comming from the left or right. Hey....just a thought. Peoples is hard. :D

Lynn,
Not bad! And it's ok to be critical, but put it in perspective. It's not bad. Bad is when the person is 1 inch tall in a 8 X 10, and out of focus. lol I don't think the composition is bad. Your just looking for a great background, and or props that you don't have........Keep trying....maybe do an exposure bracket, and try RAW. Others here can give you MUCH better ideas then I can but I give them anyway. :dunno

Yeah, and I almost blew it. Had to go to the lumber store to get some building stuff and didn't take the camera. I had the thing in my hand and left it on the kitchen table. Coming back through town I spotted them in the park. Raced the 2 miles home, grabbed the camera and blitzed back to the park. Almost missed them as they were getting in their cars when I arrived. I asked if they would let me shoot a few quick ones and they obliged. Great group and I'm going to print a few copies for their scrapbook as thanks. Something about going to the lumber store on Sunday and getting different shots. You may remember that last time I did that, the KKK was in town having a recruiting rally. These Red Hat Ladies would've sent them packing if given the chance.

I think the printer was trying to help. It's real easy to over do PS. The photo might look one way on her monitor, an other when she prints it, and still different when profesionally printed.
I think the best bet would be, to do the best you can do, then have them print a few. Then compare the prints with your expectations. You may have to adjust your photos a little to maximise the printed results.

Freak, different framing, and this one would be great. Nice hat, face, and slightly blurry, neutral backgorund.

Liked this one too, and so spent about 15 minutes, making a couple of changes, working from your original posted low res image...
First removed the date,
lightened facial area a bit
adjusted to warm the image, first face and then background.
Suggestions, Obvious, loose the date, and almost always crop so that the subject is sliding into, rather than falling out of the image.

You said to go ahead and post so I am. I just adjusted it a little in PS. Trying to get some punch in the photo. This was just a quickie. copied the low res and adjusted. Again I know very little about PS, just throwing in my 2 cents worth.

Maybe it has something to do with how the software resamples the image as it kicks out pixels? :dunno. Can be fixed in Photoshop, using layers.
It's a cool concept. I might have framed it so the left guy's back was against the frame. Better to leave room in the direction people are facing. That would have enhanced the "line" effect I think you might have been going for.

Yes, I like the first one best, too. But innocent... Boy has he got you fooled... He was scheming up something, I assure you... Brady is one fiesty, rough and tumble, into everything, 4 year old boy. But I love my little grandson and wouldn't change a thing... Except perhaps, his temper...
I am not sure that I can see a difference between the two images... But of course it is more difficult without them being side-by-side.
Just loaded Photoshop CS onto my Mac, last evening... Can't wait to see what some of the differences are.

Yes, I agree. For some reason I had to reduce the file size, and any sharpness that I added, was lost. I think you'll enjoy CS. If I might recommend a book, it's "The Photoshop CS Book for Digital Photographers" by Scott Kelby. Filled with great how-to's in an illustrated, easy to follow step-by-step layout. Kelby's done quite a few of these, and he's good at it.

Sid,
I've been using photoshop since version 4, and have always enjoyed the challenges of a new version, even with its quirks. Thanks for the book suggestion. I am actually considering just going and taking another PS course at the university or college. My old prof. might even let me just sit in on the class. I just want to get up to speed on some of the new features, and freshen up on some of the old. Guess I should check out the new books too... Just bought PSCS and a new little building to open a small shop(close May28)... So, I'm running thin on funds.
But Thanks...I almost always find I learn from comments, so fire away.

:rofl Her local nick name is Iced Tea Linda so for the calendar Iced Tea and lemons did the covering up of significant parts... The lighting is about 800 watts of made up lamps shone through a hoola hoop with sheer white fabric stretched over it and then two more flood lamps bouncing light from a white board onto her face... I had planned to use my flash fill for the first time but in the excitement of the moment I forgot....I might add that some of these photos are now leaking out and I think I'm going to get a fair amount of flack from some puritons.. had to change a few things already but on some I'm standing my ground..
