I've seen pictures of Marc's place and his archive, but I'm not sure of his proximity to the fire.
I know some other dgrinners are up in that area. Any impact? :dunno

How about some shots if you got them?:click

I would, but it's 40 miles up North from me, with numerous freeway closures reported as of this morning, so I wouldn't venture into this. :dunno
I hope our SB based friends are OK though...:lust

The fire is actually in Montecito - which is south of the city. I think Mark lives in Goleta near UCSB (University of California Santa Barbara) which is on the west/north of the fire.

We were at a wedding right there last month in a very old church. I hope that the area around it is safe because it seems it's all burning. The area is so overgrown with vegetation. It will be so hard to fight that fire. So sad.

Marc was on the west end of the fire and I was on the east side by about 20 miles. Here is what I saw.

Just south of Muscle Shoals.

This was a very unusual condition. There were 60mph winds blowing this fire, but only with in the proximity of the fire. However, there was no wind at our house just 5 miles away nor was there any wind when Tom took his image above. In this image below you can see the wave of smoke created by the wind just as in Toms first image. Of all the Santa Ana winds I have experienced over the years of living here I don't recall such an isolated condition:scratch

We just talked to our friends that live in Montecito. They said there is huge improvement - they are evacuated and live just blocks from Westmount College but their house is fine. They have businesses in the Village. They told us that last night there was an evacuation order but no one knocked on the door and the loudspeaker was not audible inside their home. All their neighbors left and they slept there.

Anyway...yes, very very sad.

How far away from that deadly mudslide area is this? Scary indeed.

Fires like this become self-sustaining firestorms (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firestorm). Fire and its behavior is very odd - remember backdrafts and how a fire can burn over. Truly scary stuff.

Probably less than five miles at the closest point.
