Kirby Cove - Marin Headlands

Back in September I did a one night photo camping trip to Kirby Cove
Campground in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

The campground is located just west of the Golden Gate Bridge, nestled
in a tree covered valley about 100 yards from the mouth of the San
Francisco Bay.

Campsites need to be reserved ahead of time as there are only four
campsites.

From the beach you get a great view of the Golden Gate Bridge.

There are also the remains of military batteries that are fun to shoot.

I had a great time experimenting with gels and exploring the area.

What a great location! The Golden Gate is my favorite bridge...even after I saw the documentary 'The Bridge' which changed my view of it forever. But I digress:
I like the shots from the beach, though I wish I could make out more of San Fran in the distance...some of the the high shots from the headlands up by the barracks shows that better. But it's such a great span.

Your gels are very cool. I especially like the arched bridge...makes you want to know what's down there! Are you using a radio slave?

A great series! :thumb I like the perspective on the oh-so-photographed object in #3. And gel-filtered strobe experimentation paid off - great colors and compositions.

Gary,
Thanks for commenting on my photos. For the strobe + gel, I didn't
do anything fancy. The exposures were anywhere from 30 seconds
to a few minutes, so I had time to run around with my strobe and
manually popped the strobe a few times. No fancy slave setup.

Thanks you for your compliments. I think the cables of the bridge
over the rock outcrop was my favorite from the shoot, since it's a
little different view of the bridge.

I've seen others shooters using gels with strobes and thought it
would be fun to give it a try.

Hey Alvin...

You're in Fremont, do you take any shots of the San Mateo or Dunbarton Bridges?

Jeeze... with this high pressure system the bay may be real still for reflections of a lighted bridge. I'm tempted to take some images.

Wow - what great shots. Often in a series of images I can clearly find images weaker than others, however, all in this series are really fabulous. Very effective use of colors and shapes within the compositions. Nothing can compare to a fabulous composition in my opinion.

I have taken a few photos of the Dumbarton. Here's one:

Access to this part of the Dumbarton (Fremont side) is along a frontage
road through the SF Bay National Wildlife Refuge closes at 6pm.
I believe it opens at 6am.

Running parallel to the Dumbarton Bridge is the old Dumbarton Railroad
Swing Bridge (http://w3.the-kgb.com/dante/rail/rrpics2.html). Seen in the background of this photo.

Another interesting feature of the area is the Hetch Hetchy water pipeline
crosses the SF Bay here, part of it above ground and can be seen from
the Dumbarton Bridge.
